Thank you for taking the (HUGE amount) of time and energy to make this video. I have loved coloring since I was a child. I still have color books from my childhood because until adult coloring became a thing, I would still color in them!!! I can’t thank you enough for all the invaluable info. Lastly, I hate that you have to put disclaimers/rules about making sure people aren’t jerks. What a lovely collection! I have a fairly large assortment of pencils as well and I don't even do KZbin. 😀 It sucks that we live in a world where KZbinrs have to include disclaimers about having large collections of things that they have a healthy enthusiasm for because there are so many folks who'd never been raised around the old (but timeless),"If you can't think of something nice to say, don't say anything at all" mantra (or think it doesn't apply to online interaction). I personally enjoy seeing people showing off the things that interest them. Sidenote: I think just about all of us who purchased the Phoenix pencils did so almost exclusively because of the packaging. LOL!!

I’ve learned a few things about myself from this video. I love the harder pencils that layer well … My current faves are the Lyras as an affordable base set, then filling in missing colors using the polychromos, luminance and lightfast. I have a few koh-i-noor polycolors that I like… also have a few ergosofts I like. I HATE my prismas. Too soft… I think I don’t press hard by default, and I hate that it can’t hold a point. I have the 150 set that is still pretty brand new. Let me know if you want to swap them for something harder from your collection. Thanks for sharing!!

Hi everyone, I am a colouring pencil addicted :) Question: If you transfer the pencils from their tins to the pencil cases, how can I repurpose the tins? Suggestions: I believe there is no such thing as a bad pencil. One just needs to find its complementary paper. If the colour doesn't look good on white paper, I highly highly recommend Kraft (brown with slight texture) paper. Try the inside of a cereal box if you don't have any. It will give new life to those pencils that may be dull or scratchy.
@thesleeplessspook Жыл бұрын
I always recycle tins to become watercolor palettes. I just attach a magnet to the bottom of the watercolor paint pan so it stays put inside the tin, and the lid makes a handy place to attach a swatch sheet to map/label the colors. If you paint with watercolor, this is a huge cost-saver because those metal palettes for paints can be quite expensive, depending. If you collect stickers or washi tape, the pencil tins are lovely for storing them. I'm looking forward to seeing other answers to this question! :-)
@sugarcandy243 Жыл бұрын
I usually repurpose the tins to hold something else. Ex: my Derwent Lightfast tin currently holds all my stencils (I use these with inks for backgrounds and in my bullet journal). My Luminance boxes (I have the 72 and the 20 portrait cases) are so gorgeous that I use them to store pencils for a particular project. This is especially useful for color-alongs since most KZbinrs list all the colors they use on the page. I will pull out those pencils and store them in the luminance boxes until the page is done (this way I don't have to keep the complete collection on my desk). My arteza box has my gelatos, prismacolor box holds my distress inks. The Polychromos tin holds my various watercolor brushes, the Albrecht Durer tin has my small collection of markers and pens (usually came in flimsy boxes that I had to throw away). After all, why waste money buying more organization supplies when pencil companies so thoughtfully send us sturdy metal tins?!
@ColorfullyOptimistic Жыл бұрын
Looks like you got some ideas! I will keep them in a pile and use them for a variety of things. Sometimes I spray paint them and do cute mixed media tops and then use them in my craft room to store other things like gel crayons. Or, I use them to turn into gift tins or give them to my kiddos

A year on and still very relevant, I have too much stuff but I like coloured pencils. I have a few brands no one touches on and then the usual suspects. Prisma and I however do not get on very well. Koh-I-noor is a favourite and like you do with derwent, I have all their incantations. The bruntfuner squares just break and chip away, but the round ones I quite like for smooth paper. I have the caran dache luminance but prefer the Lyra Rembrandt. The brunzeel are nice to hold and work with but compare with the pablo in my opinion. I h😂ave to say many colouring artists swear by the holy grail trio it would seem luminance, polychromos and prisma. It was nice to see you include many cheaper brands. Thank you
@ArtandDiamondsWithEskies Жыл бұрын
For me personally I am a Derwent lightfast lover and I love my polychromos along with of course the prismas. The Derwent chromaflow are a super opaque pencil and so for coloring I find a lot of uses for them, and I hope that someday I will have a second set of them. Although I don't have very many irojitins I really really love them and only wish that I could have the book sets. I love the castle arts soft touch, I find the castle arts gold to have a problem of being very crumbly. Although the colors have enough depth variance and additional colors to make them worth owning for me. I have a few Pablo's and luminance and in truth I wish to someday get my hands on the full set of Pablo's, as far as luminance I hope to get the remaining percentage colors that I don't have. You are so blessed that you have all these opportunities to play with different kinds. I'm so happy for you. Please don't ever let anybody make you feel guilty for having the beautiful supplies that you have we all work for them and spend a lot of time collecting what we are able to collect.
@ColorfullyOptimistic Жыл бұрын
They are definitely opaque, but I just wish they were better made or something. The Chromaflows don't feel as good quality as other Derwent products. Maybe it's just me though lol

I love coloring supply and haul videos. Sometimes I have to take a break from haul videos because I want to buy everything. LOL! We always can use more purples!! I agree with on the Pablos. When everyone said creamy I was like ewwwww but I also got mine from Amazon. Sooooo, maybe I should give them another chance. Especially love the idea of using the greens with the Polys. ALSO, completely agree about the smell of Polys!!! But the Derwent Graphitint come in a great second place. I do not like the Arrtx for Amazon paper. The first couple I did, I was like, this is OK. But after a couple more, I was like, this is too much work. Now I do like using them in my Maria Trolle and Hanna Karlzon books. They are nice for that. I love the Bruts too. I have a spare set but not new enough to have the names on them. I just got a set of the SFarbens last week and, so far, I am enjoying them! I got the 72 set. The black Edition (FC) actually do come in a larger set of 50 and then there is a 12 set of Neon and Pastel colors. A total of 62. I got them off Amazon. I hated the Colorsoft so much that I just gave them away. I was too heavy handed, at the time. At least they are loved now! Those Inktense do last a long long time. I have one shorter one. A purple. LOL. Also, only available in the UK, are the new Intense colors and I want them BAD!! Check out Colouring with Dan's video on them. Before I write a book, I will just say, you have a very lovely collection. :)

Hi! Black Editions are now available in 100 colors and they work wonderfully on black paper, but not on toner or ink like your swatch shows. Break out a black piece of drawing paper and give them a fair try because I think you’d love them. No not artist grade but still worth it.

I had a similar experience with Pablo. Back in 2017 I purchased a couple open stock from a local (now closed) art store in the area and did not like them. I couldn't understand what the hype was. Fast forward to 2019 and I picked up a couple more open stock from Blick (as I had given the couple I had away) and lo and behold I actually enjoyed them. My guess, is that in 2017 I was still getting accustomed to certain pencil brands, different papers, and my coloring style. By 2019, I had most of that down and knew what I was doing, (well mostly. 😅 ) Plus, I truly think it was the paper I initially played with them on. You're right, they do not like smooth paper. I feel like they drag on it and don't blend well at all, but Amazon paper they work well on I've found, especially mixed with Poly's. Yes, the Polychromos smell amazing! We had a fire an old apartment complex we lived at in 2017, neighbor on the 1st floor caught his stove on fire. We had to be evacuated from our apartment and had smoke stench on a ton of our belongings. I remember being upset that my polys stunk.I was worried they wouldn't come back to their glorious smell. 😂 I kept them in the tin at the time and they eventually did. Lol Thanks for taking the time to put this video together, really enjoyed it. Have a lovely holiday and weekend! 💖
@ColorfullyOptimistic Жыл бұрын
Ah yes, that could be the case for you for sure. Pablos definitely have their purpose and place. I can use them on my smoother Neenah 110lbs cardstock, but too smooth, like Klara Markova paper, and they are sooo scratchy.

Your experience with the Caran D'Ache Pablos is similar to mine! I bought some open stock and liked them, then I bought a set and quickly realized I didn't really like them. They were harder than my Polychromos and I just don't like harder pencils usually. Well, I recently challenged myself to use my set of 30 and the few open stock ones I have on a coloring page and so far, I really like them. Idk if I've just become more open to harder pencils and I've gotten better at using them, but I like them a lot now. I can see myself using my set often in the future. Also, I'm a bit sad to hear that the Phoenic Colored Pencils arent that good and have a lot of filler. I've been eyeing them for a few months now and a lot of people have given them good reviews so I wanted to try them out. I might still buy them anyways since they aren't too expensive on Aliexpress. Plus, they're just so pretty and I'm sure I could find something to use them for.

Holbein is my absolute favourite. To me, the best of hard and creamy blended together. I am wondering if you received a "faux" set from ebay because they really are a fantastic pencil.
@ColorfullyOptimistic Жыл бұрын
No, they are the real deal. I've tried open stock as well. Holbein don't work for everyone, just like Prismacolor aren't for everyone. It's just a pencil that isn't for me. I actually have a video/review explaining why they weren't for me.

I love watching these sorts of videos. They must take ages to make (so thank you) but they can provide pencil company through many sessions at my desk. And they are so colourful. And your voice is very relaxing. I don't have anything like the range of pencils you have, but I still have some I regret buying and almost never use. But I feel guilty about considering getting rid of them! I don't know how best to get rid of them. So I just keep them, so far, and I've no space left. 🙄

Dealing with trolls is a problem throughout social media. Never take them to heart(easy to say, not so easy to do). Their comments are 100% about them, not about you! Either they are having a bad day, and you are their chosen target for the moment, or they are just unpleasant people. 👾 Never feel like you have to apologize for blocking them... 🤗 You have an incredible collection of pencils!! 😍 You need to set up a pencil library, lol!! 😅 Wouldn't that be frustrating!! I have mostly only followed Pamela's Passion for Pencils. One of the interesting things I found is how opposite your styles are. That is an awesome thing!! 👍 People from all perspectives can enjoy pencils!! 💖 You do a lot of portrait work, and it sounds like and like mandelas. Pamela does a lot of flowers and leaves. She LOVES the pencil cases you dislike so much! 😂 That made me laugh, but you both love prismacolor and polys a lot! She is almost OCD about her organization, which I find awe-inspiring as I couldn't organize myself out of a paperbag!! 😉 She does have some beautiful swatch charts on her etsy, AND, get this, she enjoys organizing and swatching her pencil sets!!! 😱 Watching her process of organizing her pencil sets for swatching just floors me. I think your idea of getting already organized swatch sheets is more my style, lol!! 👏 I enjoyed your straightforward way of analyzing the sets. Always remember, each pencil set has a paper and a colorist that they would be right at home with. Sometimes, the paper makes a huge difference! Giving away sets you don't use makes a lot of sense to me. May they all find their way to someone who loves them as much as you do some of your sets. Too many sets can get frustrating and confusing! As a beginning colorist, I'm wondering what pencil set(s) work best on Amazon paper as so many of the coloring books I have are on those papers...

I gave away my Pablos because they were scratchy and hard. Perhaps I got a counterfeit set as other professionals love them. I love my Prismas and Polys as well as CdA Lums. But for coloring in books I usually use Kalour, Hiforny, etc. Oops, forgot my Holbeins, which are my favorites, so I keep them hidden as we have a lot of artists in the family. I do have quite a few of the sets you do (not all, though - especially since some are hard to get in Europe), and some that you don't For the most part, I share your opinions - maybe except the fact that I do really love my Arteza set and use them much more than prismas. Are you planning a similar video for the watercolour pencils? I am excited about the new Inktense colors - but that will mean moving them to a case... so few mixed feelings there. I've seen some swatches, and the colors are lovely... so ... new pencil case it is...

Liked before I even started watching the video! So excited for an updated collection! I only have three sets of pencils (I say only like that’s not plenty, right?) But I’ve been shopping around and needed some extra help picking out a new set. These types of videos are so fun, AND informative! Some people just seem to crave unnecessary conflict. Art is meant to be therapeutic, I mean where do they even find the energy to be so negative. 👽
