In '68 I bought my first Dobie and he was a smart and great dog. In the following years I paid $1,000 for another, received a puppy for free, paid $2,000 for a rehome show dog and $2,000 again for a puppy who had her ears trimmed. Recently I received a rehomed adult Dobie dog. Although each had their own personality, all were loyal, loving, and a great family dog.

We lost our 10 1/2 year old female on the 22nd. Been a tuff Christmas. Hardest part was how our 3 year old male is mourning her. They were besties. She had COI of 21% but 2 markers for her heart. She died from heart problems. Fine Wednesday then Thursday morning started crashing. It was so fast. When a little time has passed we will be getting another little girl. The hole she left behind is a chasm.

I had two dogs that were besties. A lab/chow/shepherd and a standard poodle. A nut job neighbor gave my girl an anti depressant over the fence. I tried to save her but she didn't make it. My boy, the lab/chow mourned her for three months until I couldn't stand it anymore. I took him to meet several rescues and he didn't want anything to do with them. I finally had him meet a young Malinois girl and he fell in love. They became besties for the next seven years. They both grew old together and passed within a year of each other. I loved all three of these dogs so much. I can feel your pain, it leaves such a huge hole when they are gone

Really great video. My vet says that the DCM tests don't really tell you anything. When our girl is gone, unless we can rescue a doberman we won't invest in another pup. Besides the fact we are getting up in years, the fact that 60 percent of these fabulous dogs die from DCM is just a deal breaker for us. Even if we were younger. We love your videos and will continue to watch even after our girl is gone. We will always love dobermans. Best dogs on the planet.

Most DCM issues that recently have been seen in Dobermans have been attributed to the grain-free diets which never had any study to justify their existence in the first place. I get a raw food wholesale in my area my breeder has used for years.

Awesome video as always. Thank you for your emphasis on genetic/health testing and also the more challenging aspects of this awesome breed. We have been full spectrum from high end breeder to hobby breeder to rescue. Each dog has been unique but each have shared many of the same challenges. (Rescues have their own unique sets of extra baggage, of course). It is so important especially for first time owners to really know what they are getting in to when they decide to become owned by a Doberman. They do not come out of the box like the awesome dogs we see on social media. It takes lots of hard work and the work and training never really stop to have a Rubydoobydoo, a K9Duke, or an Arlo

I adopted a 5 year old female Dobie, docked, cropped and spayed...from a Doberman rescue, she was $350.00 I had her for 7 wonderful years, she was an amazing, sweet, soulful Dobie! It's been over a year since she passed away and I just adopted another 5 1/2 year old female Dobie girl, from another Doberman rescue! They are a wonderful breed! And I love the fact, that I don't have to go through the puppy stage and the crazy younger stages. Dobies from a rescue are amazing, they have puppies through adults! 🥰

Got my 11 month old girl from a local breeder who bred her dog with a friends in the central US for $3K. She was raised with the breeder's kids which was a plus since I planned on socializing from the beginning. She came cropped and docked and somewhat of a family bloodline history which I asked for. The professional breeders in my area who intend their pups to go to shows start at $4500 and go up. This was still during the pandemic 2022, when puppy prices were at a premium due to everyone getting dogs. Between the normal vet bills, daycare for the first 5 months I had her, not including food, treats, and toys, I've easily got $7K+ (including her cost) into her, including paying a vet RN to help post her ears for 3 months. I figured this going in and expected it, they're not cheap to raise. She is almost a year old and super smart and knows a ton of commands and tricks. Training is a daily task. Playing is 3-4 times a day for a happy/non destructive dog. Daycare. You can't and don't want to leave these puppies at home all day. They're loud and they will protest. Daycare was roughly $400-500/month for 5 days a week. It's helps greatly with socialization with other dogs and people especially with protective dogs like this breed. They also tend to be very clingy and affectionate so expect lots of cuddle time lol. Last note, crate train, it's important.

I then bought an AKC Registered European because I wanted to be more proactive on Genetics and Health Testing/Screening since loosing one to DCM. Seeing as hindsight is 20/20, my question is- Should you have had all of those tests (DCM/COI) done prior to buying Arlo? Not sure if that is possible but curious just the same. Sounds a little fishy if Arlo's so-called parents were clear of any DCM genes and Arlo has a few? Thought it was Genetic, makes me wonder anyways.

Thanks for sharing. Olive is a dominant dog too. I think she is half and half or has some German in her but has the white American patch too. Just a tiny one. It's been rough but I don't let her get away with stuff. I used your coupon and got the pure bred kit with all the tests. Got it as a Christmas gift. It's currently in the mail so they haven't gotten it yet. But I'm very excited about it. I especially look forward to her color genetics. I'm a bird breeder and that's my fave thing. I wish they had this in depth DNA tests for birds. All they have is to tell you the sex, but would be great if some company told you about complex colors and patterns. Olive's dad was red and her mom was black though the mom had no chest patches. Olive had black feet but now they grew into the normal brown feet, but she has half a black chin which I think is so neat. So I wonder if she's split to all black or some other neat colors. I hope using the coupon helps your site some how. EDIT: Oh and I agree with another comment I saw here. Every doberman I have met has been very smart. But I ran out of luck with Olive. She's one of those exceptions to this breed. We call her our "jock" and my family is all nerds. One good thing about her being this way is barriers are super easy. You just put a garbage can or a hamper in a doorway and there's no way she can get through it. She has no clue how easily she could knock them down and destroy them. ha ha. Don't tell her.
@sheilahbuettner8452 Жыл бұрын
I just had to comment. We've had 12 of these amazing dogs and they have all seemed to share this same kind of shortcoming: They are master engineers that can figure out how to escape a crate, open a door, or get their favorite toy out from under the couch or from a high shelf, and yet they've never dumped over the kitchen waste can or popped the door open on their food bin or treat container, which they could easily do. I think they just know that although there is not much they couldn't do, there are just some things they know without being told they shouldn't do. I expect what we sometimes see as an intellectual shortcoming is in fact that they are way smarter and more intuitive than we give them credit for. Our youngest female I often lovingly say bless her heart she just ain't right...the gates are down and the lights are flashing but the train ain't coming, then she looks me straight in the eyes and I see the intelligence behind those eyes and that she's really just doing it all to amuse herself, and us.

Haha Olive sounds like she is a fun girl to be around! So glad you got the Embark test for Christmas, too. That would be cool if they had the same sort of test for birds...maybe someday! Please share with us all what you find out about Olive's genetics!

Hannibal ($1,200) was born 12/18/21 and is Euro as well. His father is a simple net search for 'Atlanta Doberman Stud'. His tail was docked at birth but I had his ears cropped last March at MacClenny Vet in MacClenny, FL for $250 (the vet said this is the sign of a good breed) and his ears stood up without the need to post. YOU ARE SO RIGHT! Great Vid with the best info! I trained my Doberman to be confident but he has no fear, and off leash, he's Superman! I mean he literally flies! He's head strong and dominant. #Stubborn Everything you said is right! I have to be an even stronger dominant alpha than him. It seems hard as a petite woman, at times. When I walk him, I stop, command a sit and have him wait. When he pulls, we go in circles and do not move forward. He gets it. I'm the ALPHA. Every morning, he is trained to turn on lights, open doors, and fetch the keys. Otherwise, we cannot exit the home. He carries the keys lightly in his mouth and gives them to me at the backdoor. I spend a lot of time with Hannibal. I know one day, he'll know my every expectation in him and things will go much easier. Can you imagine what it's like for a 100+lb Doberman to do a twist then rear up like HORSE and get loose from his choke collar and run like a #Greyhound through the entire neighborhood. Well, that happened to me and it broke my right shoulder. Everyday is training. And, some days it's as is we never trained. Some days he's a perfect boy. Patience goes a long way and in small baby steps you see the outcome of your training.! Owners need a thorough understanding of the breed. This breed tries to outsmart it's owner on the daily. Finally, I learned how to use a slip lead with treats on walks to build engagement. and eye contact .Plus, a prong collar must be properly fitted and behind the ears (snug) or else he'll keep slamming his trachea. This is a working breed. Today, his training included how to put recyclables in the bins and separating paper, cardboard, and plastic. P.S. Train your dog the difference between left and right.

The health of the Doberman as a breed is really the only thing making me extremely hesitant on getting a puppy a couple of years from now. I really, really, REALLY want one but that one problem keeps on nagging me. I've looked at other breeds as an alternative such as the Beauceron and the Giant Schnauzer. I like them all but for some reason my heart wants a Doberman. I find it hard to justify spending 2500 to 4000 grand on a dog that has a good chance of just dropping dead or getting cancer at an early age. Even worse is the heartache

Hello all, New subscriber here! I am not entirely unfamiliar with working dogs as I have a 4-year-old Australian Cattle Dog who is the most amazing dog on the planet. She is my best friend, but she was a lot of work throughout her puppyhood. It was actually because of her that I got involved in dog training and I now train dogs for other people with disabilities. You see, I am confined to a wheelchair at the moment. Willow, my Cattle Dog is actually my service dog and I've done probably 85% of her training on my own. But she can be a little bit picky and choosy with other dogs in terms of how much she likes them. She's never tried to hurt another dog or had any type of aggression issues. But I have watched your channel for a minute now and am considering getting a male Doberman puppy about 5 to 6 months from now. And I just want to know is there anything from any of you guys experience that you would say that I can do to make sure that she and the puppy Bond well? She's been around hundreds of other dogs at this point of various sizes and ages because I work at a facility. But there are definitely some dogs that she absolutely loves and others she just tolerates. This is one of the reasons for my choosing a male because I think she will do better with a male overall. I know that people would normally steer me me away from these types of dogs being in the wheelchair but working with cattle dogs I am used to high energy requirements, intelligence, and Velcro personalities, for lack of a better term. And I love working with them because they are so smart and so devoted as long as you're willing to put the effort in. information is greatly appreciated. Thank you all!

@DobermanPlanet Жыл бұрын
Arlo's vet described his ears as a "medium length show crop"! The "zip-tie method" of ear posting is what was used to post them. It relies on heavy plastic zip ties in the ear canal acting as the posts (along with some medical surgical glue called Torbot) to keep the ears stretched and sticking up. Although we have not made a video on this method (yet), you can Google "zip tie method of ear posting" or something similar and you'll probably see everything you need to know! It’s also important to talk to your vet and ask what method they recommend for your specific situation.

I bought a European Doberman after watching your channel and named him Arlo also. He is almost 11 months now and I am frustrated to no end. We did training and puppy daycare to help get out his energy but he is so over the top that he jumps and bites me relentlessly. I have tried everything to stop this behavior as a puppy. Ignore, distract, grabbing his collar and telling him no. This results in him throwing himself to the ground, biting and kicking me. He is so hi energy in the morning that I can’t even get a leash on him to walk him. I had an American Doberman before him and he was amazing. NEVER had any of these issues. I have made a massive mistake and don’t know what to do. I can’t take him anywhere. I have tried to contact several trainers in the area who do not return calls or are booked up for months. I love him but I don’t know how much longer I can live like this. I don’t want to rehome him but I may not have a choice. These dogs are NOT like others.

At 11 months old they are quite tedious.....believe or not we went through all these similar things and we did take him to a trainer. All these things like jumping and biting will all come to an end soon. Around 11 month, our trainer recommended using a prong collar for leash training and it worked very well for our Dobie. We always made him to sit and stay before putting him collar on, we used the collar to correct the jumping as well. Our buddy is 30 months old, we stopped using the collar when he was under 2 years ago.

We've had 12 of these dogs over the years. IMHO these dogs do not reach what I call the age of reason until at least two. Before then it is always constant testing the limits or planning world domination...I'm not sure which. Continual training, including the no such thing as a free lunch (everything must be worked for and earned) and judicious use of appropriate training tools is necessary. Our current youngest her impulse control was so out of control we actually after consultation with our trainer had to finally resort to a stim collar, always using the lowest setting needed to get her to focus because nothing else would work. She is now 5 and although she is still a bratty little diva is also the most obedient and best manners of them all.

I paid $4000 for my doberman puppy from a “reputable “ kennel in Denmark. They did no health testing. She suffered from guardia for the first 7 months she was here. This makes me believe her mother had guardia from drinking filthy water. Constantly on antibiotics to clear this. Three days after she finished a prescription she started the bloody diarrhea again. When I took her to our vet because she had a constant eye infection at two years we discovered she already had DCM. Before we discovered the DCM she had pyometra and needed to be spayed. The plan had been to breed her. Then when she was 4 she developed pancreatitis . She has lost at least 35 pounds and looks terrible. But she has a not stop appetite.She has cost me way more with meds, supplements and prescription foods than I can afford but there is hardly a day go by that I do not cry because soon she will die. She loves to play but she looks like she is in pain with her digestive system Now she is only 5.

I just came across your Doberman videos here they're very good we've have 4 Dobermans raised 2 from a puppy and two rescues but I must insist on the difference between an $3,000 Doberman and backyard breeder most backyard bred Dobermans will die from cardiomyopathy it's very important people understand this they're trying to stop backyard breeding with Dobermans lot of these dogs don't live past 5 years old and if you buy a $3,000 Doberman Pinscher they check for that and because they're higher bred Dobermans chances are they will not get cardiomyopathy cardiomyopathy is a severely enlarged heart it does not pump properly in some cases you'll get signs of coughing choking due to the heart being so enlarged it rubs on their esophagus and that's very important three of the four Doberman Pinschers I had died from cardiomyopathy which is an enlarged heart a lot of them don't live past 5 years old some even younger than that and in most cases you don't even realize it until they drop dead before you sorry to put it like that but that's what happens the one that lived and passed away at 11 years old was the $3,000 Doberman he never had the cardiomyopathy so again this needs to be stressed pay the extra price because of health issues Dobermans also get wobblers disease this is something else that you don't get when you pay for an expensive Doberman do not buy a Doberman Pinscher from a backyard breeder they should stop breeding these Dobermans because they do not live long

I do not think the level of energy has anything to do with the breeding selection or qiality. In each litter there are more or less energetic puppies, the job of the breeder it is to try to match that level of energy and that personality with the right new family. I chose "my" breeder two years before I was actuslly able to wrlcome my little girl into my life, and told him from.the start thst I was looking for a very affectionate, human oriented, not dominant and medium energy Dobermann female. I am really pleased with the way he supported me and indicated me the right puppy two years later. She is now 15 months old, very interesting Italian/Russian pedigree, beautiful structure, but, most of all, the dream of my heart.

My black and rust European boy, purchased in February 2022 cost $4100 with the ear cropping($800 extra). He’s absolutely gorgeous. His vet actually said, “He’s magnificent!” His Embark breeder’s kit DNA test gave him a clean bill of health, but unfortunately, a life expectancy of only 8 years. That’s $500/year just for the dog! He’s also very dominant and hard-headed, but can be so sweet and cuddly (only with me). Also, I don’t agree with you about the intelligence of the breed, based on my boy. My rescue German Shepherd mix (75% GSD) is so much smarter! Love your channel!
@ladyfarrier5949 Жыл бұрын
Most dobermans are extremely intelligent. But just like people and any animal..... some are smarter and some, not so much and some in between. All animals and people are individuals.

Doris, Sorry to hear that you don't feel Dobies are not intelligent enough.... they are so easy to train and super smart, they are so obedient too. I had more problems bringing up my children..Lol.

@@zekehu7701 - and to,others here - It’s absolutely correct that one can’t judge an entire breed from one example! Thinking it over more, my boy learns positive commands quite quickly. He mostly has behavioral issues - will not stop counter surfing, for example. I think this is my fault however, as he definitely needs more exercise!

Dobermans are the 5th smartest breed. GSD sit at around 2/3 I think.

My red European Doberman’s price was usd 4250, bought in 2022. Lots of positives but one huge problem with him is how despite lots of socialization he is a fearful dog. There’s nothing that helped him so far.

I'm on my second doberman now. First one died 13 years old. My second is 2 years now. Please explain why it is good to get the test to try and get a idea weather they will live a short or long life. Get the dog appreciate them while you can let nature take its course. Would you like to be told off your doctor when you are 2 years old you have a good chance of dying before you are 8. Sorry for the negative response but just my opinion.

I would be upset if I paid 3k for a Doberman from a breeder and come to find out he has a high COI and has two copies of DCM. Did you let the breeder know? I did Embark on my $500 Doberman and her COI is 17 percent and she has one copy of DCM, DCM2. She is clear for everything else. My last Doberman that I paid $200 for lived for 11 years with no health issues until her last months of life. I don’t think paying more money is always going to get you a healthier dog.
@iReinforcements Жыл бұрын
I think he mentioned in a previous video how dobies that come from BYB tend to be healthier than these “high lineage” dobies. Would make sense since they tend to have a less COI.

Thank you for doing the $3000 doberman and DNA test videos 👍💕 I purchased a female doberman Anarchy (Annie for short) from a reputable breeder in Alberta, Canada. I paid $4000 CDN including ear cropping and tail docking. I'd like to send pictures but I'm not sure how to on KZbin. Is it possible to upload pics ? Thank you so much for the fantastic Doberman videos and Doberman Planet website. Sincearly Rayna & Annie BC Canaca

the worst is dealing with the breeders. smdh. they all act the dog is theirs even when they are selling them to some one else. in my area all of them won't even let you take the pup until after the 8-10 week mark. so it bounds with them & not you the owner. they tell you what ear crop length they will let you have on the dog & they want to do a home inspection & several i talked to won't even sell you the dog if you don't own land of 2acers or more. they are making me furious.

Many of those breeders are justified in what they require and their practices.

If the genetic testing issues are true, then the breeder isn’t reputable? I’m confused.
@yishihara55527 Жыл бұрын
You need to be aware that there are some Doberman breeders that will not sell you a dog if you request that the ears not be cropped.

I must ask: Do you think that all euro dobies are the same? I mean, there are a HUGE difference between lines. Most "euro"lines americans talk about are pure showlines and if u think they are "high-drive" then u should never get working lines. What lines are Arlo from? I guess my dog has little in common with most "euro" dogs that americans talk about even if he is purely european.. Just had to pay 1200$ even he has very good pedigree ;)

Super interesting. I have a 'high end' bitch doberman (European) and she is exactly as u say high, high energy and reckless and focused on what she likes and wants...I also have a tan rescue pandemic doberman boy (European) and he is much more gentle and although a big boy much more focused on the outside world compared to my bitch whose life is all about her....

3000 is not very expensive. I’m waiting for mine for 4500 and we’ve been in line for a year already… I wanted exactly the high quality of a European Doberman and with health tests for his parents
@hopehartsook4235 Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, you didn't call out the "reputable" breeder. This means they can continue to fool people who pay hard earned money for a so called higher end dog.
@dallemon15 Жыл бұрын
So you paid $3000 for a very inbred doberman having TWO genetic markers for DCM. (1) Does Arlo like you and the rest of the family? (2) Are you all spending high quality time together? (3) Will you continue to give Arlo a pleasant productive and well-cared-for life? Not really a bad investment if you handle the responsibility and Arlo has a nice life, for whatever amount of time he lives.

Does this mean your breeder was selling less desirable dobes under the false pretense of being a "high-end" bloodline...?

Spending over 1000$ is just silly to me there’s a lot of good breeders I found a breeder selling good dobermans for 750 😂😂
@ladyfarrier5949 Жыл бұрын
It honestly depends on the region you're in. Some areas are more expensive and some cheaper. Part of it may also depend on if there's a lot in that region or hard to find in that region.
