Chex mix is something that my grandpa would make in HUGE batches and he would send it out all over the country and sometimes the world, we are a military family. Everyone in the family looked forward to the box from our grandparents and that bag of Chex mix was always treated like gold in my house. Now that he has passed, I have started to make it and send it out.

My grandmother started making this for the holidays using the original recipe. She used her cast iron skillet and a large turkey roaster pan. Over the years she added her special touches like adding Cheerios, tripling the sauce, and lots of nuts. I think what makes it special is how each family makes it their own which is always the best!

**Ingredients:** - 9 cups of Chex Mix (combination of rice Chex, corn Chex, and Crispix) - 1 cup pretzels - 1 cup Cheez-Its - 1 cup nuts (e.g., cocktail peanuts) - 1 cup Goldfish crackers - 4 cloves of garlic, finely chopped - 6 tablespoons unsalted butter - 2 tablespoons seasoned salt - 1 tablespoon onion powder - 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder - 3 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce - Tabasco sauce, to taste (approximately 4-5 dashes) **Instructions:** 1. In a large bowl, combine 9 cups of Chex Mix (rice Chex, corn Chex, and/or Crispix), 1 cup pretzels, 1 cup Cheez-Its, 1 cup nuts, and 1 cup Goldfish crackers. 2. Finely chop 4 cloves of garlic and set aside. 3. In a separate saucepan, melt 6 tablespoons of unsalted butter. 4. In a small bowl, mix together 2 tablespoons of seasoned salt, 1 tablespoon of onion powder, and 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder. 5. Add the spice mixture to the melted butter and stir well. 6. Add finely chopped garlic to the spice and butter mixture. 7. Mix in 3 tablespoons of Worcestershire sauce and Tabasco sauce to taste. 8. Pour the seasoned butter mixture over the dry ingredients in the large bowl. 9. Mix everything thoroughly, ensuring that the dry ingredients are evenly coated with the seasoned butter mixture. 10. Preheat the oven to 250 degrees Fahrenheit (or use a smoker for a smoky flavor). 11. Spread the mixture evenly on a roasting pan or casserole dish. 12. Bake in the oven (or smoker) for 15 minutes, then stir the mixture. 13. Repeat this process three more times (four cycles in total). 14. Allow the Chex Mix to cool before serving.

I grew up living on top of a grocery store. When I was small, there was no Chex mix. There was a snack called "Doo Dads". Turned out to be the predecessor of the Chex Mix that is popular today. I used to take an entire box of the "Doo Dads" and put it in the oven with a stick of melted butter drizzled over the top. I would bake it at 375 degree for about 20-25 minutes. Then I would cool it for about 10 minutes before serving. It was delicious ❤️💯 !!

My sister makes this, she cuts the butter by a 1/4 or less and adds that amount of bacon grease. 😳 oh my, that is good, plus she does add just a scant amount of liquid smoke. I’m a lucky recipient of this deliciousness! I love my sister!

I hated the Wheat Chex when I was a kid. Now, with a more sophisticated adult palate I love them in the mix! I make mine with only the three Chex cereals. Sometimes add plain Cheerios, sometimes Life cereal for a little sweetness. The only nut I use is pecan halves. Yum! I also double the entire mix of sauce ingredients - including the butter! Now I want to add a tiny bit of Liquid Smoke to the sauce. Never thought of that! Don’t know why, since smoke is my favorite flavor. (You can take the girl out of Texas, but …) You’ve really made me hungry for this now! I’m with you - it’s not just a holiday snack!! Great video! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

I used to make Chex mix for my kids. They each had a pail that ice cream used to come in. They each had a full pail and they would bring that to their rooms and snack on it while doing homework or listening to music…..they did not have cell phones back then…..my husband and I were lucky to have a bowl to ourselves. My recipe was similar to yours but still a tad different. I baked mine after adding the wet ingredients. This was back in the sixties.

Dave In the 1960's when I was a child Chex came out with a recipe on the back of the box during the holidays. Your recipe is by my recollection close to the original Chex recipe although I believe it had less Seasoned Salt, and was baked in the oven, not smoked.I Love that you use Fresh Garlic, if you want to make it easier on yourself invested in a garlic press, or a micro plane, but the press is less expensive. I use only fresh garlic, cause to me powdered garlic tastes like garlic scented dust, but to each their own. But, once my mom made the original Chex recipe we made it anytime we wanted an easy to make snack 😎

I use Orville redenbacher popcorn oil for my wet ingredient. I like to add in the baked cracker with cheese combos, Keebler mini crackers, rice & corn Chex, pretzels, bagel chips. I use lawrys, garlic powder ranch dip powder. So yummy!

When using warm or cold stuff but not hot stuff and you don't have a large enough bowl you can place all of the ingredients into a large plastic bag if you have. I've seen people use shopping bags as well as brand new of course trash bags...so, after everything is in you twist the bag closed leaving air space for everything to toss well, and then gently toss the ingredients around until well mixed. This method also means less clean up afterwards, lol!!!

I'm going to try your fresh garlic add in!! I love Chex mix and have been making it for Christmas gifts for my family for years. I usually add in Gardetto's garlic rye chips and oyster crackers. I also bake a huge batch, using one batch of seasonings for each ingredient (9 cups cereal, a bag of pretzels, a bag of oyster crackers, etc.) I make it in a big Pyrex bowl on the microwave, cooking each ingredient separately. I line a card table with paper towels , then layer on each batch so it mixes evenly, let it cool and package it up!!

I first made this original "Chex Party Mix" a week before Christmas 1965. My grandmother first made it in the early 50s. I mixed it in a large aluminum tub and packed it into four 6-quart plastic bags. The recipe was a big hit then, and I added Planter's fancy mixed nuts. Along with 6 or 7 cookie recipes and several pounds of fudge I was able to give Christmas gifts to everyone that year. Times were hard. Chex Party Mix made it a Merry Christmas!

I always use a sprayer to put the butter on, so everything thing is coated, and then I sprinkle my spices on. I always sprinkle then taste sprinkle some more until it is seasoned to my liking. I always add more than the recipe calls for. I also added gold fish pretzels instead of regular.

My mother used to make something like this using Shreddies. I had to search the websites of our major groceries chains here in Edmonton; because I just don't notice Chex on the shelves. Maybe it's just not that big a thing here in Canada. Gonna hafta give this a try, though.

My Favorite Chex Mix Recipe: I use only Rice and Corn Chex (not wheat) or Crispix, 9 or 10 cups of dry cereal. Then I add a whole lot of nuts -- 32 oz bag of deluxe mixed nuts plus 32 oz bag of cashew halves and pieces plus one of those 9 or 10 oz cans of cocktail peanuts. Put in about 2/3 of a large bag of pretzel mini twists. Use your hands to combine the dry ingredients gently. I combine 2 sticks of butter, melted, with 4 Tablespoons Worcestershire sauce, 1 tablespoon garlic powder, 1 tablespoon onion powder, and 1 Tablespoon seasoned salt. I pour the butter mixture over the dry ingredients and very gently combine it with your hands while wearing some cheap plastic gloves. I have a very large pan (21 inches by 15 inches) that I bought in a kitchen goods store just for making Chex Mix. Spread it all out. Bake at 225 degrees F. for an hour, stirring carefully every 15 minutes. Spread it out over a few sheets of newspaper to let it cool for an hour. Then store it in air-tight containers or bags. People love this end result. It seems stingy to go with one cup of nuts or pretzels. Be generous with your cooking. You want to delight your guests. This is a special treat that I sometimes put into quart size zip top bags as gifts to friends. It's a great gift for office friends, a regular delivery person who you appreciate, people who have everything they need, or those who live in a tiny place and don't have space for more stuff.

I had some of my mom's mix today. My Mom would make huge batches of this and give it out as gifts. We had our own ziplock bag that no one could touch! It was addictive. It was legendary and I had friends and co workers try it too and want some. It can get pricey with nuts and cereal and different add ins. Now I make it too but add more seasonings and boldness like this. Gonna try smoker! Love that. Try adding honey flavor chex or nuts that give some sweetness. I love the sweet crunch along with savory.

I use extra worchester also and if I have wheat chex I use some but mainly for just appeal. If you save some bread sticks you can toast the slices and they also add a lot to it. nuts are good but they tend to fall to the bottom. I like lots of rice chex or crispex but My favorite is using bugles lightens up the mix and they are delicious. And who doesnt like a bugle. I find them on sale and add pretzels also. My go to kick is Tony chacheries (sp) cajon seasoning. I add a little to each batch it has a little heat with it lingering to long.

About 40 or so years ago, Nalley made a snack mix called Merry Mix. It was the best snack mix ever. It's pretty much the same thing as the Chex mix but Merry mix would use white Cheeto puffs too. I prefer to use powdered Worcestershire sauce. The powder makes it stick better to the mix. Which adds that deeper flavor that we crave.

You want to add jst enough pepper so that once it's all done it has jst a slight heat kick to it. Stir the melted butter, Worcsetershire sauce & seasoning until well mixed, then take the dry cereal, cashews & pretzels mix & dump it into the liquid ingredients bowl & stir until all the cereal mixture has a wet look to it. Then put it in a microwave on high power for 7 mins, Making Sure You Stir it every 90 seconds until completed. Once done, lay a bunch of paper towels on a table & pour the cereal mixture out & spread it out to cool.. The enjoy!
