What I like most about this is how simple yet effective it is. So fast, allows you to parry, get a feel for your opponent's defense, AND you can direct the hit to any level your opponent isn't protecting. If they react to the feint and don't create enough space, their leg is done for. Even if they know your trick and preemptively defend their leg after avoiding the feint, you can hit anywhere above the waist and get a hit in. Truly beautiful to watch!

I love that spinny flourish. It looks like nonsense, but you're actually waiting for blade contact, because that tells you you're in distance, as well as smacks the opponent’s blade in some direction. Once you see it move, you know what to do, and that you're close enough.

Unless I'm mistaken that "spinny flourish" is the feint in question.
@SuzukiChenАй бұрын
@@aaronredwine5579 yep, its a bait move to see opponent's reaction, like waving a sword up and down smoothly while advancing from distance. allows you too see what opponent has in his mind- is he scared? does he wants to strike you right now or trying to play defensive? expert opponent will gain small distance like a step away and start doing some sort off feint as well, and aggressively move towards you, trying same stuff on you, or going into full guard with pointing the tip of the sword to your chest not allowing you to move any closer with that, unless you make a strike (it counter 6 guard fake out like in this video, cuz if you do it, his move will be faster- just a deep dive with a thrust to your chest, or quick slash from that "point guard" to the legs/hands (with quick swirly motion as well))

It would be faster to just swing from the side but you'd telegraph that move. Feints work because the opponent's brain processes the first move and then processes the second move too while you already planned out your attack. It's a mind game. If the opponent is experienced and figured you out, it can go south as well. This add layers to it.

Probably a little easier with a lighter, faster blade more set up for slashing with a curve but there's no reason you can't feint in to a strike from a higher guard position. You'd just need to experiment with the timing and the angle of the strike.

What is the difference between this and fencing? I haven’t seen either of the two and would love a breakdown.
@kalashnikovdevilАй бұрын
Well technically speaking this is fencing too. The difference between HEMA and modern Olympic sport fencing is that HEMA is still a martial art compared to sporterized and watered down small sword fencing which is what you see in the Olympics. The differences are many, beyond using blade styles and types that would have been actual military weapons at one point in many cases, most HEMA fencers will also train 'in the round', meaning they can move more freely in a larger space, like if you were actually fighting someone, and more ways to register a hit than simply tapping someone with the point. Another possible comparison would be the difference between Olympic target shooting and something like Three Gun (admittedly HEMA is Historical, and Three Gun in most of it's forms is extremely modern). Olympic style small caliber marksmanship is still shooting, just like Olympic fencing is still fencing, but if you want to learn practical firearms skills as they'd be applied historically (or modernly) in a more serious context, then your first stop should not be an Olympic trainer. Make sense?
