I am always in awe with how you articulate your thoughts so profoundly Dan, with such memorable ✨ mise en scène ✨both visually and just overall with presentation. Wonderful video as always

Thank you, Alex! I was about to post pretty much that exact same comment on your "Silence in Literature" video. I love that concept of tracing a single image or idea through a bunch of different books. You have a fantastic critical eye, so it means a lot that you found my rambling worthwhile.

This video carries symbolic heft AND delivers an emotional wallop! 🥰. Off to Google the musician…. Can’t wait for part two!

😂 Thanks, Shawn! 😂 If you're looking for a place to start, "Soon-To-Be Innocent Fun/Let's See" and "That's Us/Wild Combination" are both go-to jams in our household. (He, or possibly his curators, really seem to like using "/" in his track titles.)

Also, if you're in the mood for disco beats and double entendre, here's a fun track Russell produced: kzbin.info/www/bejne/q4izkpuCmJKda9k

This is an incredibly cool idea. I wish I knew more about the music and the book you compare. As it is, I still appreciated the connections you made between the two different art forms.

Thanks, Brian! It's a privilege to get to introduce you (and others) to these artists. Thanks for sticking with me.

I like the way you juxtapose two kinds of art to find connections and distinctions. I don't have the language to dissect or articulate music like that.

Glad you enjoyed it! I definitely started to doubt I was making sense at several points during this shoot (not uncommon for me, but more severe in this case trying to connect two different art forms.) If a dummy like me can do it, though, a smartie like you absolutely could!

I really enjoyed Revenge and thus have assumed your opinion was wrong and/or invalid, however your ability to talk shit and attempt to present an argument was valid. Isolation is an interesting theme that pops up very frequently in modern Japanese literature. I am fascinated by these novels that explore contrast between loneliness and the crowded city.

You should ALWAYS assume my opinions are wrong/invalid, Michael! I'd be very interested to hear about your favorite parts of the collection. (Also, the possibility has occurred to me that I held Revenge to too high a standard since I enjoyed her other translated works so much more.) Isolation would be an interesting theme to consider more deeply in the future--not sure exactly why it seems to work so well for me sometimes (Convenience Store Woman) and fall totally flat at others (No Longer Human.)

That sounds like homework, I read Revenge as an ARC before it’s release, it was my first Yōko Ogawa and that could play a big factor into the reason I have such affection for it. Also I prefer a novel that is darker, or different and that could be another reason. Also why I didn’t enjoy The Housekeeper and the Professor as much.
