Purple Toad first appeared when he delivered letters from Peach in Super Mario Galaxy. As a quick reminder, Peach is trapped at the ACTUAL center of the universe. Sure, the Toad Brigade builds a spaceship, but the first letter is delivered mid-construction - *before* the Brigade has a tangible means of leaving the Comet Observatory. So that first letter most likely came through an intricate and secretive intergalactic smuggling network. Which, to be clear, is an insanely impressive feat of orchestration in and of itself. I personally do not subscribe to this theory, for a very important reason: his playable role. Purple Toad (called Mailtoad hereafter for brevity's sake) is a playable character in Captain Toad when the titular character and Toadette are seperated; he is the Player Two in each's levels. Even though the two heads of the Toad Brigade continue an arduous journey to find and/or rescue each other (due to Wingo being a joyless bastard), he finds his way to both when they need his aid. Mailtoad is wherever he needs to be, just as ready to hunt for Gems and Power Stars as his leaders. He simply...is. Dude can fast travel across the known universe, takes on danger with a gleam in his eye, and slips 1-Ups from under the nose of Bowser himself! Mailtoad is not a goddamn palette swap, put some RESPECT on his NAME.

I really like the name Sam. I feel like it's a soft name. It's versatile, because it can be short for Samuel or Samantha, and I knew a Sam of each in high school. But that got me thinking about something else that I need to get off my chest For context, I grew up in Texas. I was best friends with Samuel Sam in middle school. We were doubles partners in tennis and we took tennis lessons outside of school to improve. Basketball was my main sport but I played tennis for the school because I decent and it was pretty fun, and that's how Sam and I became friends. Freshman year of high school I wanted to focus on basketball so I decided to drop one of my other sports, tennis or football. I hated football, but our team was small and people kept hounding me to stay on the team, so I did. There was also an understanding that football is a manlier sport than tennis, so I picked the cooler sport. Texas football culture and all that. Freshman year, I didn't have any classes or extracurricular activities with Sam, so I didn't talk to him at all. Sophomore year I finally quit that other god-forsaken sport to play basketball year-round, but I still wasn't in contact with Sam. By this point I thought "We used to be so close, what happened?" but I made other friends so it wasn't a big worry for me. The next time I heard anything about him was early senior year, when I heard through the grapevine he was gay. Again, I grew up in Texas, so someone coming out as gay was a huge deal, which it how I heard about it even though we went our separate ways. It wasn't a big deal for me though, my immediate reaction was like "yeah I can see it, good for him." But then I started thinking about it. I matured a lot in high school, so I was fine with gay people senior year, but I wasn't always like that. As a middle schooler in the deep south, I was incredibly homophobic. It wouldn't surprise me at all if I said something terrible about gay people to him, and once he realized that about himself he cut me out of his life. I wanted to say something but I didn't know how to approach him, so we graduated without speaking again. I don't even know if this theory is right. I never got closure, and I've never talked to him about it. I've had at least two dreams where I sat down with him and apologized. It's one of the biggest question marks in my life Good video Coney!
