Thanks for your reviews. They are great. I think they're the most comprehensive, unbiased and helpful I've found. It would be nice if you included the weight of the bags. It's an important spec, especially for one bag and lightweight stuff. You could even check the weight live with one of those little luggage scale handles to see if it matches the stated specs

Nice roundup (and range of bags). I have the Patagonia Mini MLC (and the larger MLC) and I think they're well designed and good compromise for weight. Since you asked about other bags... There's a lot of attention on the more expensive $200, $250+ one bag travel bags, but I think a sub $200 category would be useful for a lot of people out there (maybe Timbuk2, though they're starting to push past $200 on some models). Also a smaller 1-3 day "light and on the run" bag would be a fun category. I often travel for 1-3 days for work and have been trying to reduce down to a 25 liter bag, but it's tough. Thanks for another useful and enjoyable video.

Hello OneBagTravels. Many thanks for all the time you've invested in producing the content. Super helpful!!! After quite a bit of time trying to select a bag that will allow me to use it as a personal item when traveling on EasyJet in EU, I've narrowed it down to either Thule Aion 28L or Evergoods CTB26... I like the CTB26 as it has two water bottle pockets, is a very functional design, has great reviews and seems like it will sneak in as a personal item if not crammed to the gills. Similarly, I like the Thule Aion 28 as it also looks to sneak in as personal item, has good organization, one water bottle pocket, but does have a 'wet' area section which could be useful if you worry about shampoo getting out or something. I'm about 189cms and wonder if you have any further insights that might help me make a decision? Additionally, I was able to try the osprey sojourn Porter 30 and really wanted to keep it, but it was not tall enough for the hip belt to work properly. Many thanks!!!
@OneBagTravels
@OneBagTravels 5 ай бұрын
I'm not that tall but I'm not sure height will make as much of a difference with those 2 bags. Your height really matters when you're using a hip belt as it will sit differently on people of different heights. Neigher of those bags have a hip belt, so I don't see why they would really sit differently because they just have shoulder straps.

If you were to pick only one out of the four Minimalist Backpacks, which one would you get? Obviously these are rather expensive and I don't want to spend that much money on a bag that does not suit my needs. For me, it's comfort> Capacity > styling > durability. I am leaning toward the Mini ULC right now but my concern is that it is relatively "heavy". Thank you for your review.
@OneBagTravels
@OneBagTravels 11 ай бұрын
Picking one of those minimalist packs I would choose the Patagonia mini MLC. It's the heaviest of those 4, but high in terms of your criteria, comfort and capacity. It is heavy relative to those other packs, but not if it's compared to packs with similar features.

Hi, I want to sincerely thank you for your quick response. Really appreciate it especially from an expert like you. :) The MLC is what I am leaning toward as well. I have done a lot of research on the Mini MLC but it seems to be a tad too big to be used as a "personal item" when flying for many airlines. What's your take? I know the CZ 28 will fit, but I just don't like the design (lack of a proper bottle holder, does not fully open as a clam shell and questionable comfort. For comfort, would you rate the ULA as the best? That bag for some reason is in limited quantity. @@OneBagTravels

I own perhaps a third of these and what I've discovered as much as I love travel I love choosing appropriate travel bags! In some of these I have the older version so they don't have the latest improvements but they are still of my favourites. I remember when you initially profiled the cabin zero military I had previously chosen a cabin zero basic bag as my one carry-on in a multi-month trek thru SE Asia and as I was not carrying tech or any heavy clothing this cube shaped lightweight bag with no dividers or even a robust carry system was still all I needed. Previous to purchasing the Peak design I had used one of a few Timbuk2 bags for business travel so I appeared streamlined instead of as if I was setting off to climb a mountain. As someone who prefers to steer away from pockets, water bottle holders and interior dividers I'm always able to keep the weight down and one bag travel is made so much easier! Thanks for another great multi-review, cheers! 🌎 🌍 🌏

Now I’m looking for a bag similar in capacity/ size but can hold a larger laptop (16” Lenovo Legion Slim). I’m torn between Bellroy Transit 28L and Peak Design 30L. Would you know which one could pack in more/ as much as the Allpa 28? Which one’s carrying system would be more comfortable with a laptop & charging brick in? Which one do you prefer to travel with more? Any other notes on these two bags are much appreciated. Thank you for what you do!
@OneBagTravels
@OneBagTravels 10 ай бұрын
Good choices! I like both these bags a lot, Peak Design probably holds more just because it's slightly larger and the packing style is more open. Straps on Bellroy are probably better, they're thinner but the bag carries well, Peak Design straps are rather thin and I don't think carry a lot of weight that great. Bellroy packing style is a little weird to get used to because basically none of the pockets have their own volume. That's a tough decision between two great bags, hope this helps!

Looking to replace an RMU 30-50L Travel Briefcase. I got it secondhand, unused for $40 3 years ago. I've traveled extensively & have tried to replace it. I'm not sure if RMU still makes bags, but I want something similar. It's got structure, a clamshell opening (not a front loading or what you refer to as panel opening), a thin-ish side-profile, side compression straps & excellent interior storage & sections. The only thing missing is a side water bottle stash pocket. I feel the Tortuga is the closest to the RMU, but I feel like the interior zipper compartments fall short. I like the Patagonia, but its way too floppy.

Can you PLEASE do a review/what are your thoughts on the Cotopaxi Allpa 50L Duffel Bag? It seems like the absolute PERFECT max carry on bag and could hit that sweet spot of carry on while having enough space that you'd normally get from a bigger checked bag since it's such a spacious duffle, but it is technically 3 inches taller than the max dimensions for most airline carry-ons. Thanks for watching! Puffy jacket was from REI, which you also probably can't get outside of the US. Osprey is a good brand, I think they ship internationally. Farpoint/Fairview has much better straps than the Porter if that's important. Cabin Zero is another brand to look at, they're based in the UK but ship internationally, very reasonably priced bags, well built and comfortable carry straps on most models. Like the Classis Pro and plus are basically the same model but the Pro has hip belts. Good bag, simple, large and comfortable.

I have the 40L and like it. It's easier to pack for long trips, especially if you bring a laptop etc. You might want loadlifters if you're dayhiking with it, but for hauling around the airport, it's fine.

Deciding between the Mini MLC and Dragonfly has been exceptionally difficult for me. I like the lighter weight of the dragonfly and supposedly better comfort, and sleeker form factor but the MLC has bigger capacity, organization, and the luggage pass through sleeve. For the Dragonfly, without the pass through sleeve, does it mean there is no way to properly put it on the luggage handle? I can imagine that to be a huge positive when you are tired of carrying the backpack. In my case, I am using the bag as a personal item while the carryon will be a wheel luggage. Please let me know your thoughts. Thank you!
@OneBagTravels
@OneBagTravels 11 ай бұрын
Dragonfly is probably a better size for a personal item, but yet it's not able to go over the handle on a roller. You could always buy both and return the one you don't like? It's hard for me to truely get a feel for a bag just from online reviews.
@danielcorry4136

You could probably clip the chest strap and put that over the handle. Not as tight against the luggage handle, but at least it wouldn’t fall off.

Question: how come metric units (liters) are used to measure volume for backpacks and not imperial units (fl. oz. or gallons)? Most other volume measurements (soft drinks, milk, gas/petrol) are imperial - why use metric for bags?
@OneBagTravels
@OneBagTravels 9 ай бұрын
Good question. The US has a history of mixing imperial and metric so I don't think it's that unusual. For example 2 liters of soda, 750 ml wine bottle, but a gallon of milk, metric is also used widely in science and medicine. Some companies based soley in the US will use imperial cubic inches, while others use liters. For example Red Oxx uses cu. in., but some others like Tom Bihn, and Knack Pack use liters. Some US-based companies like Osprey will show units in both imperial and metric. However most non-US companies will only show cm dimensions, g/kg weight, and volume in liters. I don't know for sure why this is the case, but my guess is for consistency and standardization with some history thrown in. For the history side, a lot of backpacking, skiing, mountaineering techniques were popularized in Europe before the US (for example this is why a lot of climbing terminology is of French origin), so people were already used to seeing bags measured in liters. And then just general consistency across brands. Because a majority of people are used to seeing liters, and know what it means to have, say a 40 liter pack, it's just easier for other companies to follow suit. Even though it doesn't make sense to use metric system for volume, and imperial for dimensions, I'm used to seeing it so I know what it means.

Hi which one do you think is the best option between Peakdesing TRAVEL BACKPACK 30L vs Black Hole® Mini MLC® 30L?
@OneBagTravels
@OneBagTravels 10 ай бұрын
This is the eternal question. Peak Design look better but I like the packing style of the Mini MLC better. If you want a really nice looking bag with a lot of attention to detail I'd go Peak Design. If you want a pack that can hold a lot, is easy to pack, but kind of looks like a big box on your back, Mini MLC is a great pack for that.

And maybe people with less upper body strength/women. I find that the lack of a waist belt makes a huge difference for me. I've read that this is common for smaller backpacks because they don't come so far down on the torso and the beltwould be less useful, but I think that's a statement that doesn't really apply to any but the tallest of women. For me, a belt that goes around my waist is often better than one that sits lower down on my hips, and one that goes anywhere on my torso is usually better than none. @@OneBagTravels

Been using bp's my whole life. Best I ever bought was probably Granite Gears urban bp- The Jackfish. It is compartmentalized= Perfect/ It is designed= Perfect/ and it looks good. It has a great harness system and holds small amounts of stuff or can be expanded very well. The #1 problem? HORRIBLY BUILT. Straps come off, zippers fail, etc... Never have I loved a product in just about every way- except in it's construction. The a long and thin and awesome on your back- most bp's are square, which I hate. But @ 120 and it will look like shit after 6 months and have a bunch of stuff fail on it= I can't buy another. (They stopped producing all of their urban bags, I'm sure b/c of complaints) Watching vids now to find a replacement. I think for city use, you really need 30L+, anything less just isn't enough to hold much other then your basics, but everyone needs to eat and buy food or whatever.

I haven't really been following Granite Gear, but they used to be a local made in USA high quality brand. 10 or so years ago the company was sold and started making gear overseas and lowering the quality of the materials. Now you can buy their bags at Walmart. The name persists, but I think the Granite Gear of the old days is no more. If you like compartments Tom Bihn makes some great gear, made in Seattle, very high quality, but expensive.
