Finally, an A/B test done right. In the past Steven you never went back and forth with it off then on....THEN...back off again so we could really hear it. Nice job here.

Was just about to say the same. It really helps to have the A/B right next to each other. Especially helps when it's done twice (A/B/A/B). Anything more becomes a SNES cheat code

Too much sub frequencies also really screw with your headroom. It is a good tip. I don't think I learned this until 10 years into mixing, but I'm all self-taught and some things just don't seem obvious until you realize them.

This not only made my whole year, this confirmed some EQ tricks I had been previously using to clean up the muddy sound in the low end of the bass guitar, using the basic digidesign EQ3. It has been more than a pleasure using Slate plug-ins for our entire mix, not to mention spruking the Slate Digital name to everyone we know!

A lotta haters for this useful video. Sure there are plugins, even free ones, like bark of dog, that do exactly this...so what!? People seem to be getting offended that there might be someone who didn't try this method. For all you award winning geniuses: What are you even doing here on this channel? Surely you're too good for this! Your arrogance is most likely undeserved. For the rest of us: Thanks for an informative video.

Hey Steven, great video thank you. Where would you place the EQ in the mix bus chain - before or after compression? Same question if you were to stick the EQ on a drum bus or bass part please. Thanks.
@SlateDigitalTV7 жыл бұрын
With Resonate Hi Pass Filter, I'll get the mix compressed a bit to tighten it up, then I'll use the resonant high pass filter after, and sometimes I'll reserve it to the mastering stage too.

Hey Steve please tell us how to cut the Hi end at 20K as shown in your display...how you achieve that tight cut?
@nicholascowan17315 жыл бұрын
Just with a nice aftermarket eq. I don’t like to low pass that hard tho personally. It’s a personal preference thing. I think he does it for volume and since it’s a poppy track, but if it were some heavy raw rock and roll I’d leave all that high end in

@markporo7 жыл бұрын
I’ve never thought to filter out that much low end on an entire mix. Is that something that’s common to filter out or would you say this is a genre/ song specific technique? I was under the assumption that the kick had important frequencies below 50 Hz. Thanks for this tip. I love using Slate plugins.
@Markpianist17 жыл бұрын
Whatever sounds good. There are no rules. You can still boost something after it has been cut because it will affect other frequencies.
@SlateDigitalTV7 жыл бұрын
Normally I’d high pass no more than 30hz, but when you use the resonance along with the high pass, you can tune back the lows to taste. If the song was a bit slower I may have used a lower high pass frequency.. faster tempo can build up too much sub lows if you are not careful down there. As usual, the ultimate judge is the ears. Good luck! - SS

@Matthias1387 жыл бұрын
You still need to mix properly and make some definition in the low end. If there's plenty of low end coming from a lot of sources, no HPF on anything and You boost lows on master bus, You will bring low end mud, not tight low end.

I don't think this qualifies as a "Trick". It's more of a tip for those who don't know how to EQ.
@brianwilson497 жыл бұрын
it certainly does qualify as a 'trick' as a high pass filter is designed to remove low end not boost it and so most people would probably not associate high pass filtering with boosting low frequencies. this technique has double the impact as it removes the lowest frequencies which may be creating clutter and highlights the mid to high end of the subs which will create more low end impact, both with one plugin. win / win.

I'd say it's a more of an "idiots guide" for engineers who don't have grammy awards - so I found it interesting.
@thesoundresidence7 жыл бұрын
That's why engineers from way back prefer certain hardware eq's before others..... Because they know what to listen for, and have a reason for their choice of type of eq (or compressor for that matter). It's not a trick, it is a common solution based on knowledge and experience...
