Hey everyone! In this video I am talking about my experience of my first 2 weeks of observational placement as a student midwife!
I really enjoyed my time in the hospital and in the community, and I hope this video will give you an insight on what you may expect to see when working on placement in different areas of maternity.
I apologise for my camera constantly zooming in and out! It's a higher resolution setting so it should be better, but instead it decided to un-focus quite a bit so sorry for that.
If you have any questions about placement, the course, any video ideas or general questions then please put them down in the comments below.
I hope you enjoyed this video! Thank you so much for watching!

I’m really enjoying watching your videos and gleaning from your experiences and insights as I prepare to start Uni in a few weeks. I love your passion and care that comes through when you’re speaking about midwifery and what you’re learning. You’re going to be an amazing midwife by the time you qualify! Keep going 👏🏻

Hi! Thank you for letting me know! That's what happens when you are editing the video at 12am😂😂🙈so my shift patterns were usually 8-18:30, but sometimes 8-4:30, so it really just depended on what tasks we were doing that day. Next block of placement though I've got a 12.5hr night shift, which is starting at 7:30pm-8am, and that's on the postnatal ward, so I really think shift patterns depend on what areas of the hospital you are working in. So glad that you enjoyed the video, and following my journey! 🥰x

When your on hospital placement when do you actually start getting involved with births and not just viewing . I no its not all about 'the catch' but when would this be an opportunity.

Hiya! Great question! It really does vary on each individual circumstance, the hospital you're working in, and the area you're working in. I'm not even sure if I'll witness any births until I'm in the birthing centre in June, as I'm in community up until then, but there's chances to be with the homebirth team potentially, so it really does depend what areas you're in. Some of the student midwives at different hospitals are in labour/delivery wards early next year, so it really does depend. The NMC advices you to deliver 5 babies by the end of 1st year, but you can do more or less than that depending on circumstances. Sorry this is quite vague, but I hope it helps x
