As far as him rubbing after you 😂 you'll get used to it and you'll be more prepared for it! It takes time to adjust, but this is just him playing! Also- do NOT use lasers! Yes, they love it- but lasers aren't safe! They can damage their eyes, but it also causes frustration because they can never catch their "prey", and this can lead to a psychological disorder in them that makes then crazy/angry/depressed. It doesn't happen to all cats, and when it does happen- it happens out of NOWHERE & It changes them! So it just isn't worth it! Also, I don't recommend using flushable litter, but do your own research. They say it's safe for pipes, but it really isn't! Plus if you allow him out ever, it can spread toxoplasmosis to our water supply and affect the enviornment! I rescued a cat two months ago and she is a Tortie- orange with stripes like yours, but also black! We named her Reecee 😄 I can relate to a lot of what you are saying! Lmk if you want to talk and trade rid bits and tricks for different things! It's certainly an adjustment and you will see msny different changes over time, but it's so worth it!

Cats do realize that you are caring for them when you clean their boxes and feed them. He is so beautiful. You could try a scratching pole that's made of wood. It's an upright pole on a base that he can stand on his hind legs and scratch. I'm so happy for you.😺

As a former animal rescuer I am BEGGING you NOT to let him outside! Unless you are harness training him and will be watching him the entire time, do not let him outdoors. Domestic cats are not wild animals, they do not belong out of doors, they have been specifically bred to be indoor animals. They do need lots of high places to be able to jump to and such (there should be at least one room where they can make their way around without once having to come down to the floor level, if they want), but they absolutely do not need to be outdoors, they are not meant to be outdoors. As for training, there is actually another KZbinr, from Japan, who trained his cats to walk on a harness, to do various tricks, and to use scratch pads. The channel is called JunsKitchen (it's mostly cooking, hence the name). One of the best vids is "How I trained my cats". I hope you'll get some inspiration. There are a few cat training vids on his channel, though, so have a poke around.

@@monical7145 I didn't say indoor cats die young; I said that indoor outdoor cats have a tendency to die young. I should have written it "indoor/outdoor"; it would have made my meaning more clear. And "tendency" means that I'm expressing a likelihood, not a rule. Some humans start smoking tobacco in their teens and continue well into their nineties without getting lung cancer, but that doesn't change the fact that smoking causes lung cancer.

Look into building / buying a simple catio! It is a way to let Globex outside while keeping him-and your local wildlife- safe. (You did mention your porch area, but I wasn't sure if you meant enclosing it like a catio.) If your home doesn't have a suitable backyard space for a catio, think about leash training Globex. He might love the enrichment if he takes to a harness well. This way, you're outside with him to keep him safe.

Cat Petting Tips: 1. Cats often don't like something "swooping in from above" with no warning and that includes hands. I don't have cats, but know it's polite to kind of offer your hand in front of them first like "hello I would like to approach you with my hand" 2. Cats loving petting first then 'suddenly changing their mind' is because they can get easily overstimulated. Not about being flaky or mean like some people claim lol Also, definitely joining in on people saying you should keep him inside. Cat harnesses are a thing, you can get him used to one and then take him out but only in one of those, so he can't get in dangerous places

A tall cat tree or scratch post by the sofa will help. Keep him an indoor cat! People who think they should be out really don't understand cats. Our previous cat was a birman and loved being a house cat, lived to 18. The first cat we had was an outdoor cat, only lived to 10, got into so many fights. He was also hit by a car twice, once as a kitten and then when he died. Cats can be happy indoors as long as they are stimulated with plenty of play and places to be a cat.

You could also make a catio so Globex can go outside safely. Also ginger cats are absolutely clever and yes tou can train him to fetch if you put the time in. ❤❤❤

I'm a longtime cat parent, and I just love your sweet boy, Globex. His interest in you interacting with his litterbox might be leading up to him showing you one of the feline demonstrations of affection: Having a wee in front of you. Cats are vulnerable to attack when they're relieving themselves, so they really prefer to have privacy. If Globex hops into the box while you're cleaning and does his business for you, that means he loves and trusts you implicitly. Cats can show a preference for certain types of scratching surfaces. Some like upright posts with carpeting, others like upright posts or panels with sisal rope, others like cardboard scratchers with catnip rubbed on them. You need to find what Globex prefers. Also, if Globex likes the 'nip, try rubbing a handful on whatever you want him to scratch. I am going to highly, HIGHLY recommend that your kitty remain a strictly indoor cat. I've lost several cats to predators, cars, and mean people, and it's always heartbreaking, and totally preventable. Contrary to what some folks believe, cats - including male cats - do NOT need a lot of territory. They're fine with an apartment and will even share that space with another feline friend as long as they get along well and have a few personal spots where they can get some privacy if they want it. This idea that cats 'need' to have access to the outdoors is an outdated concept that is just wrong and can be harmful to the cat. Please don't risk losing him.
@milkisnotgamer5 ай бұрын
I would recommend not letting him outside though. Being outside can be extremely dangerous, especially since you have a busy street outside. Everyone I've ever met who likes cats has always agreed that the concept of an outdoor cat is actually really dangerous and that training a pet that wants to go outside that it's never happening can be best for them. It's obviously more time and effort to teach your cat to stay inside if they want to go outside than opening the door for them, but it really is the best thing in my opinion
@frogsbongs5 ай бұрын
This! I know England doesn't have big predators like America, but foxes and badgers and other cats can easily have a bad interaction when you're not monitoring you pet. And then the damage the cat would do to the local ecosystem too. House cats kill for play so they tend to be worse than feral cats who kill to eat

Roly; first off you’re doing amazing as a new cat dad!!! As for your question about keeping him from weaving in between your feet while walking; it’s going to be like everything else you’ve done with him successfully. You’re going to have to adapt to his behavior. And you’ve done that with everything else. 😊when you’re getting ready to walk or go down stairs pause to listen for him. When he joins you let him go ahead and then you can follow. It may take a bit of time where you’re slowly making your way encouraging him to go on ahead, but in time you both will get into a rhythm and won’t have to think about it each time.❤as for letting him outside; he’s adapted beautifully inside your home. Allowing him outside will introduce several more problems for both of you. First is the dangers of the busy street and the train. Cats don’t always make the best decisions and tend to run into cars when scared. Another issue is other neighborhood cats. Larger cats will start fights and beat him up or bully him. Also allowing him outside will introduce fleas, ticks, ringworm and other awful things to you both. My cats have lived indoors for 20 years very happily. Also he is thanking you for cleaning his litter.❤ much love to you both. Happy tails🐈🐈🐈😻

He’d been dumped as a kitten because he’s part Turkish Van and where they are a rare breed, breeders don’t like the females mating with any other breed. His mum had been got at by a moggy and he was the result. He’s got a slight overbite, cat ptosis, squiffy back legs and anxiety because he survived on the streets till we got him so he has trauma. He’s the sweetest ginger and white boy and he’s so vocal. He has anxiety dreams which we usually have to stroke his paw or his head gently until he calms down. He also has what is called a “feral accent” so he can’t meow properly. Because he’d always been on his own when we adopted our black cat Teddy he didn’t know how to react, now they’re best buddies and Teddy seems to helping him with his anxiety dreams as if he senses him having one he goes over and snuggles up to him. My childhood pet cat Snoopy was an outdoor cat, and when I was younger I didn’t think about him being outside much as I didn’t understand the dangers, but as I got older, and as did he, it used to STRESS ME OUT so much seeing him outside and leaving him out there to sleep in the garage…bless him he lived until he was 21, but towards his later years I convinced my parents to just keep him inside which was such a relief cause I knew he’d be safe and I wouldn’t have to worry about cars, people or other cats… Since losing snoopy, I’ve decided when I get my own place and if I get any cats I’m going to keep them inside to keep them safe and so I don’t have to worry about them. - Cause it really did effect me and it got to the point where I created this mantra / touch wood sayings that I always did everytime Snoopy was outside, and Snoopy’s safety took over my days and nights, just cause I loved him so much🥲 - I still have issues with anxiety and this mantra thing I do, but it’s no where near as bad as it was when snoopy was alive, it helps now that our dog Sasha lives inside with us as I don’t have to think about all the things that could happen if she lived outside etc

So happy to hear little Globex is settling in nicely! On the topic of whether to let him outside or not, I would suggest not letting him out, exactly for the reasons you brought up, unless he is supervised or you can harness train or construct a catio 😊 thanks for also bringing up not wanting him to go after birds and other wildlife. I'm a wildlife rehabber that rehabs birds and we get many calls from pets just doing their natural thing thing and attacking their prey species. I believe it's important to protect all animals, both domestic and wild 💙

If you give them proper enrichment, they'll be much happier and healthier inside. It's not even just safety, there are so many diseases they can pick up outside and it almost always decreases their life expectancy. You brought up many reasons it's better for them to be inside and they're true. We domesticated them, being outside means they're almost always in survival mode. Since he's never been outside, you don't need to worry about him being upset that you don't want to let him outside. Since you live by busy streets, it's a better idea to keep him indoors to protect him from getting hit by traffic. He won't be bothered too much by it at all. As far as him wrapping himself between your legs when you're walking, well, that's just a cat thing and you will simply have to be more careful not to let him knock you down. I don't know of any cat that was trained out of the behavior. What I did to train my cats to keep from clawing up my furniture was to cover the parts they scratched with clear mailing tape (NOT STICKY TAPE). They don't really like the feel of it and can't gain purchase with their claws. After a while of not being able to get in a satisfying scratch, they just stop trying. It could be a year or more, but it's only packing tape and it doesn't hurt your furniture. I believe they also make clear plastic sheets to cover the furniture with, but I personally just used smooth clear tape because the sheets didn't exist when I first used it.

Hey Roly! I spent a long time volunteering with a cat-only shelter and have had them all my life. I have a couple tips. First, consider building or purchasing a Catio, do not let him free roam outdoors. We've used Catio set ups to let our cats outside, and it keeps them safe from predators and vehicles. Outdoor cats also run the risk of exposure to any number of plants, some potentially deadly to cats (Lilies are a good example). For scratching and keeping him off places, cats don't like strong smelling spices. I use red pepper flakes as a border. You can also use a drop or two of tea tree oil, though only use enough to get the smell for your kitty's safety. If nothing else, red pepper flakes will be extremely handy if you have a Christmas tree at some point. Last thing is about him following you around. He's young, getting to know you, and is being curious about his human. He'll probably stop following as much as he gets older, but this is pretty normal behavior. Until Glowbex gets a little older, you may just have to watch out for a bit. Hope that helps!

All our cats over the years eventually learned that walking under our feet is going to get them stood on, he’ll eventually learn for himself. With the scratching posts if you put catnip on them it can help getting them used to scratching them, 18:08 as with the outside thing, I would recommend keeping him indoors it’s perfectly fine and healthy to have a cat indoors, it’s much safer for him, local wildlife and your own mental health. Outside cats just don’t live as long and it’s much easier to keep track of his health if he’s indoors, our vets always said to us when we asked indoors/outdoors was “well you wouldn’t leave the dog out wandering around, would you?”

Indoor cats definitely live longer than outdoor cats. But you can make a catio (cat friendly patio) so he can still be safe but get fresh air. For the scratching, citrus turns off cats. So maybe anything with citrus scents will deter him from scratching on furniture, and add catnip or catnip oil on his scratching posts to attract him to scratch. He’s still a baby, and sees you as a parent and will follow you around like kittens follow mama cat. So he will shadow you for awhile till he’s use to everything and gains full independence. But will sometimes follow you if he’s curious or he knows you are going to feed him. My past cats were pretty clingy. They loved to be close to me when im home. Especially after traveling away.

Congrats Roly! I Also have two adopted cats myself, and used to work in an animal shelter with cats. Cats can also be safe & happy outdoors I have seen so many people talking about the indoors option I thought I should approach the outdoor option, it can be perfectly safe with regular de worming at the vets just incase, if there are no dangerous roads nearby and they are fed/played with regularly before going out (this can reduce the chance of them hunting wildlife) My two are trained not to attack birds for example. I find this new trend of people trying to keep their cats indoors no matter what because the outdoors can be dangerous, concerning especially since cats prefer isolation from other cats (they tend not to be pack animals unless forced into a pack in which they can tolerate one another sometimes) and even domestic cats natural territory is HUGE.... faaaar farrr bigger than your regular house/apartment, garden or catio. Also my two were both adopted and were used to going outside prior to us owning them, trying to keep them indoors would have been a nightmare, they would have just kept begging & begging (How cruel to force them indoors, they would have been so unhappy). Leash training your cat is also pretty mean imo, your basically forcing them to get used to not triggering their natural dodge reflex when you put the harness on them, but if you have no other option I suppose it is a way to get your cat outside safely... but then I do ask myself why adopt a cat if you don't have the space? (I know my two would hate it so much it would really feel like I am torturing them, I tried it with my Thomas when he was still a kitten and the result of the harness was that he no longer wanted to use his legs, and I was not about to irritate the heck out of him until he gives in and accepts it... that's so cruel). I think keeping your cat inside is a decision that should be based on the area surrounding your house, how safe it is and also are your neighbours nice and clued up about your cat? (I had a go at mine once for trying to feed my elder cat with fat fried bacon from a pan... he has stomach issues and gets meds and special food, trust me they never tried that again & if they would, I could also file a police report) Are their good fences surrounding the garden area, how many cats do the neighbours have? Did your cat experience the outdoors by themselves before or not, most importantly always keep a cat indoors for 6 weeks after a move to help them acclimate to their new environment and establish their territory. As for litter training, if you want your cat going to the loo outside rather than indoors that's also a pretty easy thing to do, you just have to transfer the used litter sand to a good spot in the garden and the cat will naturally be used to their own scent and switch spots or use both options. All I know is there is nothing my two cats love more than having their freedom and sunbathing in our garden in the beautiful sunshine, watching bugs and eating grass, lapping up puddles after the rain, playing, pouncing on things, marking territory and climbing trees sharpening their claws... all these things my cats can't really do inside either, even with their toys they prefer nature and those are just a few of their favourite things. :( But I must agree some cat owners are super irresponsible about taking care of their cats and let them out willy nilly) Cat owners that let cats out in the middle of the night screw you, (do not let cats out after 10pm or before 6am) that's the hours where cats tend to get run over as there are less car about, so they get tempted to cross roads that look clear, and the few cars driving are often speeding like mad at night... that's how the majority of cat road accidents happen (I also witnessed this twice and attempted rescue, best to keep them on their side on a form of stretcher and not move their neck). Also it's when cats will be in their hunting mode due to the fact that mice and other scavengers are nocturnal and active in those hours. And owners that don't feed their cats or play with them before letting them out some even encouraging hunting behaviour, that's how you not only damage the environment and turn cats into an invasive species but also give your cat potential parasites etc. So don't be that cat owner (anyone who reads this, please & Thankyou) I don't think the solution to cats problems is locking them up indoors, maybe it makes humans lives easier... but I really don't see it as a good solution for our four legged domestic but wild at heart furry freinds!!! In short, in order to safely let your cats outside: -Get your cat microchipped -A collar with a bell and Name and phone number in case of emergency (these days we even have GPS trackers for their collars) -Brief your neighbours -Don't let the cat out at night -Make sure there are not too many neighbourhood cats in a small area -Neuter your damn cat -Feed and play with them before letting them out -Regular vet check ups & de-worming twice to four times a year -Don't if there is a motorway nearby or alternatively make sure your garden has good high fences that they can't climb easily Honestly if your to lazy to do these things as a cat owner... don't get a cat, Unless it's a cat that is indoors only due to health conditions such as certain allergies etc, but you should still be doing these things as a general cat owner rule. Also kids can get kidnapped, run over by cars, scammed all sorts outside on the street... you wouldn't shut a kid in the house 24 hours a day just cause the outdoors could be dangerous would you, no you accept those dangers as a parent and go let your kid play with the neighbours kids down the road? imagine how boring your life would be as a kid with one of those iPad mums, no son you can never leave sit on the sofa and play with your screen just in my peripheral vision. So I don't really see the point of this whole current concept of I wont even let my cats have the option of potential danger for the sake of their fun, because I am too scared for their safety approach. Unless your deeply scared by loss, in which case perhaps your not ready for a responsibility like a pet.

My cat he's 7 yrs old, he has always hated closed doors. Any door gets closed he will scratch the door and meow so... all doors in the house have to be open lmao 😅... also. My cat has always gotten under my feet.... it's almost impossible they want to be close to u. I'd just be self aware of him near u😊 Sprinkling or spraying catnip on scratch pads will encourage him to scratch it

Doors: your house is his territory, he doesn’t like being shut out of a part of his domain and so shouts at you for closing a door. Scratching: cats don’t like sticky, so put some double sided sticky sheets on the areas he is scratching and maybe try putting some catnip on the scratching posts to encourage interaction. Letting him outside: I very much did not want to let my cat outside, but she let me know with “bad” behaviour that she wanted to explore outside. When we did start to let her have supervised time outside she was much happier. So he’ll let you know if he wants to go out. So far it sounds like he’s happy enough to stay indoors, so just keep an eye on his behaviour and if nothing changes then you’ve got a happy house cat ❤ Foot weaving: no idea how to stop this. As horrible as it sounds, stepping on his paw accidentally might be the only way he learns that he can’t be that close to you when you’re walking. You both seem very happy with each other and it’s a beautiful journey to witness, thank you for bringing us along for the ride!! ❤❤

If you have busy roads then I'd say keep him inside. We have 3 indoor/outdoor cats, we live in the backside of nowhere in Ireland but even we have lost cats on the road in the past which is devastating. If you can, keep him in. I've read that growing a tray of grass inside for them to chew on can help (when they need to purge). Youre doing a fantastic job dude 🤗 Top cat-daddy points

I, not too long ago, had to put my kitty to sleep. She developed a random, incurable, liver disease. I could have put her through more tests and whatnot, but her doctor was (thankfully) candid with me in telling me that, yes, the tests could tell us more but it wouldn't change the outcome. Anyway, all of this is to say that this is the first time in my 40+ years of life that I haven't lived with a cat. So, seeing you with Globex and learning to live with him, he learning to live with you, it vicariously gives me a kitty to live with again. So, thank you Roly, thank you for sharing your life with Globex and his life with you. You're both beautiful and it's a treat to see how the two of you get on.

Hey Roly! I'd recommend not letting him out, you can always harness train him and take him on walks, but cats are extremely destructive to the environment, I have worked in rescues and conservation, and one of the big reasons birds, reptiles and other small animals get handed in is because of cats. In total cats have contributed to the extinction of 63 species of birds, reptiles and small mammals. As I say watch some videos on harness training, it would be best to get him used to it while he's young x

So happy for you and globex! I have a cat that goes outside and I’d recommend keeping him inside. As she’s getting older she has gotten injured occasionally by local stray cats. And if you live by busy roads that’s also a big concern if he doesn’t quickly realize to stay away from cars. Best of luck to the two of you ❤

Inside cats all the way! Especially if he’s been raised indoors for most of his life. I have a gorgeous ragdoll adopted kitty and she’s an indoor cat. We live in a city centre with a very busy road with lots of buses and lorries nearby so totally inappropriate for an inquisitive cat. She has loads of toys and activities indoors and gets supervised outdoor time in her little harness with an extendable lead which she loves. She’s kept safe indoors and birds and mice are kept safe from her outdoors. As she’s a pure bread as well there is a big risk she would be stolen which would break my heart so if she’s indoor only that’s a lot less of a concern. Indoor cats live longer and healthier lives as they’re less likely to get in harms way and less likely to contract diseases. There’s certainly an argument that if you live in a rural area with lots of land and less cars that might be different but in a city I would always keep my cats inside!

I luv how you are so excited, learning how to build the best cat relationship and so happy with Globex! Lots of comments on a cat being outdoors. I adopted Luna 2 yrs ago when she was six, and she would have gone inside outside plus I’ve only ever had cats that go inside outside, I believe there’s a part of their life that needs the natural world. But there are council bylaws and body corporate laws where cats have to be on your own property only, which is impossible as they will just jump the fence. I considered where I am, roads with buses and lots of cars, foxes, feral cats, strays, birds, plenty of warehouses to get trapped in, restaurants which will have things to tempt her to stray, and because she is friendly I’d worry she would be stolen. So inside Luna has stayed. I had to learn how to have an indoor cat, they need attention and stimulation to replace what they get outside and they only can get that from you. I had to be ok with changing a cats environment into a human environment, she’s even just laid in a tub of potting mix and dirt and I realised that’s as close to nature she would get. But she is happy and thriving. Luna has become super smoochie and it’s a toss up whether Luna or I suffer from separation anxiety when we are not together. You’ve starting a beautiful cat / hooman relationship that will only get better as you learn about him and he you. Happy purring 🐈🐈

Especially if you have a busy road, the railway and foxes outside I would keep him indoors. All my cats have been perfectly happy to be kept indoors. Even where I live before in an apartment and I only had a tiny balcony of 1 square meter as their outdoor space. Now I have a rowhouse and made a big catio of 6 x 2 meters (accesible with a catflap in the back door) with shelves along the wall that ends into a high shelf that is high enough to look over the fences and hedges. There's also 2 wooden boxes in the catio where they can hide in or sleep. A third of the catio is covered so when it rains they can still go outside. I wish I could enclose my whole garden but the fences aren't right for it and at the back it's a hedge.

I am 7:34 in. I love the cat Journey for you Roly! ❤️ I've had my cat Chiquita for 7 years, I got her at about 5 weeks. She has been the best companion and is such a sweet social cat. I finally started getting her to eat some wet food about 6 months ago. She is short hair, but has A LOT of hair. I feed her mostly kibble. She was having some issues with constipation. She always drank water. She needed a little more fiber and liquid to help with the hair from grooming. The first time I introduced wet food recently, she was really emo about it. Was not a fan. Now she knows when she gets her wet food. She sings for it, lol. I also mix in some plain canned pumpkin twice a week. Most cats love pumpkin, just plain unseasoned pumpkin puree. Great for fiber.

You are doing so so well as a new cat dad! He is stunning and I completely understand you not wanting to let him run outside. There are quite a few dangerous situations he could find himself in. When I had cats and they scratched where I did not want them to I used the tiniest bit of ground pepper on the couch and they did stop, whenever they did scratch where they were supposed to I praised them. You will find the perfect balance for you and beautiful Globex.

Hi Roly! He’s such a cutie! So just a little tip from someone who used to work at a cat-only vet: I highly recommend to keep trying to get him to have wet food, try different flavors and see if you can make it happen ❤ reason being because kibble only cats are at a higher risk of kidney issues when they get older, and they really need that moisture from wet food. Also seconding indoor kitty only. For lots of reasons! Outside dangers, cat fights. Also if he goes out and smells other cats and gets anxious it’s possible he could start marking in the house (you don’t want that!). He seems so sweet, happy for you!!

Some help for 17:03 if you put a scratching post next to the part of the couch the cat is scratching he will likely switch to that instead of the couch. My guess on why he is doing that is 1.the living room smells like you ( because you sit on your couch obviously) and the cat wants to add his sent too ( it helps them feel comfortable). 2. some cats like scratching vertically and others prefer horizontally so if he only has horizontal places he is supposed to scratch the but he likes vertical than the only option to him might be your couch.

I feel like I went through so many similar thoughts as you are this year, just a few months earlier. I'm 36, and my husband and i just got our first cat together in March this year! We knew he would be an indoor cat, mostly because he is a munchkin cat (short leg gene mutation) that was rehomed because the bigger cats were just beating him up. But, because we knew he is a very curious kitty, we got him a harness with leash and every once and a while if it's not too hot we'll go on walks together or take him to a park with a mat, when he doesnt like the tall grass. We love him so much, and so happy he came into our lives this year! I am so excited to see your new boy too!! You are going to be a great cat dad!

Throw a toy up the stairs before you walk up so he runs up after that so you don't trip.

Hi Roly! First, please keep him inside. Also, for the scratching on the sofa, amazon sells double-sided sticky tape that you can use on the sides of your furniture to keep him from scratching. Also, for the scratching posts, try putting some catnip on them and physically showing him by mimicking the act of scratching on the post yourself. Also, a sharp NO when you catch him in the act will help. Good luck! He's gorgeous!

About sleeping in the middle of the rooms on the ridge. I think cats like to have a good vantage point to see all around them. He’s probably keeping an eye on things. I think I recently saw covers for the ends of couches to prevent scratching? It seems that’s where they prefer to scratch no matter how many great scratching apparatus you supply! Though I am not a cat owner, the spay bottle of water is used for a training : discipline tool here in the US. I loved how you described him wanting some part of himself touching you while sleeping. Must mimic behavior with mom or litter mates. I grew up with a dear cat who slept with me. The bigger I grew the less she snuggled with me up top, till. She was sleeping on my feet on top of the blankets. She loved it there and I felt like she was my guard cat. She was absolutely the best. So happy for you both. I think I’m seeing your actual eye color which is …. Not sure the words. Kind of nice.

Cats love getting under feet. They learn not to once you step on them a few times, but generally when they're older. It's a bit difficult. Spray water bottle is good for discipline like for scratching things he's not supposed to. I'm all for letting cats outside (with belled collars), but in your case with the traintrack and main road, keep him in. Could always make a cat run so he still goes out. Or you could train him on a harness so you can walk him outside
@SiaShar5 ай бұрын
Hi Roly! so happy you and Globax are getting on great. I have grown up with cats for all my life so I understand the challenges that you have described. 1. Getting under your feet. Well for on, it's a sign of trust, thy are not afraid of you in any way shape or form BUT don't kick them, even softly, this trust is easily broken. IF a cat is constantly under your feet it should tell you that it trust you and thy are happy being under a person so much bigger than them. There are also a few other things that could b happening, thy want attention from you at that time, thy are trying to herd you to where thy want you to go to perhaps feed them, play with them, clan their litter etc 2. Laser pointer, this can lead to frustration from your cat, you are asking them to chase something thy cannot catch and get any satisfaction from. You are teasing their inner hunter but teaching them that it doesn't lad to anything caught which can damage their confidence 3. The outside, I personally had cats that I didn't let outside. They aren't actually wild animals anymore and don't know how to avoid human dangers or other animals not mention diseases. I had on cat, however, that needed to be outside so I taught him to walk on lead and took him for walks, that way, he could b outside but I was always there to control the situation Just a general recommendation: checkout Jackson Galaxy's youtube channel. H is a cat behaviorist and has A LOT of good helpful material to see including how to get your cat not to do certain things like scratch your couch in a positive way
@thecatmangaming55035 ай бұрын
I'm going to echo most of the comments supporting your instinct of keeping him inside! The average lifespan of an outdoor cat is five years or something crazy like that People will say "oh but they like the outside/need the stimulation" but that's just them not doing any research into the needs a cat has so they can be replicated indoors - it's very possible, especially in a case like Globex when he's already been an indoor cat for a while More to the point, really happy you're getting on with Globex so far! I don't think you're biased in him being a beautiful cat at all, his eyes and markings are honestly gorgeous In terms of the Globex going under your legs thing... my two girls did that a lot as well, they both just kind of stopped when their young kitten energy wore off so Globex might be the same honestly, if it doesn't improve maybe you could get him a little collar with a bell so you can always hear him coming?

Cats that scratch on couches are upright scratchers. They would scratch on trees in nature (instead of dirt). You need something that won't move, like a cat tree. You can also nail a carpet remnant to the wall. For your couch, they make a sticky couch protector, sticky on both sides so it sticks to your couch and the outside is sticky so the cat doesn't like to touch it. They're easy to take off and don't leave sticky stuff on your couch. That can be good while he learns to use the tree. You can also distract him with the laser pen when he starts to scratch the couch.

The question of keeping a cat indoors or letting it out can be very difficult. I once cat-sat for someone who lives in the middle of a very busy city. She didn't ask me to do this, but told me that she sometimes puts a harness and a leash on her cat and opens the front door- then she puts down a chair there for herself and sits in the opening with her cat. This way the cat gets to see what's outside, gets a little taste every now and then, but it's too dangerous to even walk the cat there so there's no way she's letting the cat roam free. Your patio idea reminded me of that, especially since you'll be giving him some outside space- I think that is an amazing idea! My neighbours have a nice garden, and they build a huge fence around it that bends inward at the top so their cats cannot escape and be in their garden freely whenever they want. Considering the statistics on how much life expectancy and general health expectations plummet when cats are allowed to roam free, I would usually recommend against that. Especially when you have a busy road and train tracks around, big risks imo... In the end it's very personal: how smart is your cat? How safe is the area? How much do you worry? I hope you can find what works best for you and go with it, best of luck ❤

PLEASE keep him indoors. I beg you. There is no need to own a cat if you are going to leave it outside all the time, UNLESS there is an outdoor "catio" area for them that keeps them, and any other animals in the garden, safe. I live in the city where I am, and there are so many outdoor dangers, I would never EVER, in good conscience, let a cat outside to freely roam the neighbourhood.

Harness training (assuming it is a GOOD harness) can be a safe way to let a cat get fresh air and exercise. Of course this would take time to do both research and training and there isn’t a 100% guaranty the cat would never slip out. Still better than free roaming though.

To keep him from scratching things like your couch, first get things that are okay for him to scratch and put them near the couch or whatever that you're not wanting him to scratch. This gives him an okay alternative. Encourage him to scratch those, using catnip can help, and discourage scratching things you don't want. Some people use things like sticky tape, but we honestly never needed to. Trimming their nails can also help, also saves your clothes, fabrics, and skin from accidentally getting caught/scratched by long sharp nails. You have to train them to accept this with positive reinforcement (treats, cuddles). I would clip my cat's quickly when he passed out in my lap.

Definitely consider keeping him inside, stray and feral cats can be rather aggressive. But if you want to let him outside, see if you can find/build him a catio (a window extension that goes around the window where he’s enclosed in a breathable box, but can still see outside). My cat also does the same thing where she goes between wanting pets, and being like “okay, I’ve had enough”. Nothing to be worried about. Also with the weaving in between your legs, it’s basically him saying “thank you” but I would vocalize for him to watch out. *Cats can understand the tone of your voice.* As far as food, make a mental note of what “flavors” he likes; mine prefers tuna, salmon, turkey and chicken. Once you find flavors he likes, stick to those.

He is GORGEOUS...Its lovely to see him doing really well. We have 5 indoor cats (Siamese/Oriental/Moggie) all rescue and they can come and go as they please into the catio. They love it and it gives them a great interaction with the outdoors in safety. Flat Cats do screens which fix over windows which are cat safe. We also have a Catzami cat wheel for exercise which is a statement piece of furniture but allows them to have a good gallop when ever they choose. Our house is pretty Catified TBH and probably not to everyone's taste but its their home too and its rewarding to see them using cat trees and shelves to play. As far as encouraging him to use a scratcher I found calling the cat by name as I'm rubbing the scratching post with my palm encourages them to use the scratcher to put their scent on it too. Love the channels

Omg absolutely love him. I actually have a certificate in animal behavior. First off you are doing amazing but we all knew you would be cuz u are kind and nurturing as a person. Stopping him from going out under your feet is all about positive reinforcement. If you try to clicker train him you can stop him from bad behaviors by reinforcing the behavior you want. If you click when he walks on the outside of your feet then click. It takes time but it is worth it. I trained my old cat to sit and to hush cuz he was a big old Cryer. Putting cat trees in the right places are key. You should try to place them in heavy traffic areas for him. Also having plenty of toys in places he likes to scratch can divert him from the behavior. If he is food motivated treats are also a great way to positively reinforce good behavior. For going outside. Please consider not doing it. I have a friend who is a vet and she said the indoor only cats live much longer. We have similiar areas you and I live in. I own a house we have foxes and a busy road too. So many cats get hit or strays fight them and then so many diseases. Then they kill birds and mice and bring it etc. But feel to ignore me you are doing great roly!
@tinagaustad83485 ай бұрын
Hey Roly! Love you guys and hope all is going well! As a previous vet tech, I personally would not let him outside unless he is supervised and on a leash. If he goes outside alone, he will most likely get in a fight with something and it is very important to make sure he is up-to-date on all vaccines that are required within your area. I live in the US and we have lots of ticks in my area, so I would suggest making sure he has a flea and tick prevention as well so he does not bring them into your home. Anything that the cat can catch outside from other cats or from parasites is going to always have the potential to be deadly. Again, I am in the US so I’m not sure how everything is in the UK but I would also suggest getting him microchipped. If you plan to take him outside that way for some reason if he ever gets away from you and someone finds him you have a chance of getting him back. Good luck with the new fur baby. 💜💜💜

Definitely keep him inside! Even thought many unfortunately let their cats outside it's not only dangerous and irresponsible but also illegal and labeled as animal neglect in many places. There is so many dangers outside that it's just insane to expose a pet to them all the way from diseases, cars, humans, dogs to other wildlife. Also cats are responsible for killing into extinction so many local species in so many countries because people keep letting them out even thought they are technically invasive species to most areas. Cats are also one of few species that kill for fun so getting fed home does nothing to protect wildlife species. Buying/building cat patio, taking them out on walks in a harness or letting them be in your backyard in long leash are the safe options to let your cat experience some of the outside world without putting them (and others) in danger.

Maybe get little Globex familiar with harness? Put it on him indoors and let him get used to it, then add a leash and walk around the house with him, giving him treats for good affirmation. When he is comfortable doing that, you could go sniffing the outside world from safety of your front door and then step by step get to have little walks with him. That's how you can keep him safe and still let him explore the great wilderness ❤

My cat did that walking under your feet thing for all 14 years of his life. He sent me bouncing down the stairs when I was a teenager, broke my spine in two places. We never managed to stop him doing it, I was constantly worried my mother would have a fall on the stairs but she would just stop and wait for him to move out of the way haha. No advice, sorry. Globex is adorable though, congrats on your ginger friend
