My first Gibson was pretty special. I was 16 in 1986. It was a 1955 Southern Jumbo. Cost $1100 NZD saved up from my paper run money and then my apprentice wages. Had quite a few since. Current one is a 1997 Les Paul Studio. It was intended to be a stepping stone to replacing ones I had sold. But I ended up sticking with the Studio because it has such a good tone. I always like to have a Strat around too, because they have a sound a Gibson does not do. They hardly get played, so i always end up selling them for the next gear purchase. Next one will be a Squire so I do not get tempted to sell it due to infrequent use. One that somebody has maintained frets on and modded etc. I like SGs too and want to check out the new original series ones. Will have to wait. Just woke up and my active studio monitors are crapped out. Transformers I think. No juice. Listening thru AKG phones and only the right side is working. Annoying because my amp does not have a cab. I do the load box to DAW thing. Is going to take some time because I am laid up getting treatment for busted up spine and I am not going to be able to go back to my old job they say. The SG will have to wait. Next year maybe. Pissed off, but that's life. If it was easy we would live forever.

I totally had the same experience with the Gibson's neck but not on my first Les Paul, unfortunately. My first LP is a Les Paul Classic 1960. It has a slim neck. I didn't realize that it was too much of a problem until I purchased a couple of 2014 Gibsons, and LPJ and SGJ. The necks on both are PERFECT .... more of a 50s profile I guess?

@@jlr022159 Yeah. This is right with info I have heard elsewhere. I always thought it was the inflation, you know. But seems Gibson guitars where cheap-ish decades ago. @@bennyzuccarello1068 I've played lots. Worked in a guitar store back in the late 80's to late 90's that had many a Les Paul, including special edition models for Joe Perry, Slash, Jimmy Page and Ace. After a while you realize that it's not the fancy shit that give a guitar tone, it's just the right combination of woods and construction. Two Les Paul standards made one after the other may have the same woods, glue, paint but one may resonate better than the other and that's what gives it tone. Based on good tone, I've played more Studio's that have sounded fantastic than Standards, Customs or even Limited Editions. To be fair, the Joe Perry Models (I played 3) all sounded like bit's of wood that floated in a swamp for too long and had dead strings on and we sent them all back to the Gibson distributor (for the UK) Rossetti. To back my assumption up that it's all about the wood, don't take my word for it... Fender Custom shop head honcho, Ron Thorn, says his favorite guitar ever is a 1985 Squire Silver Series Strat. If there's ever a guy that could claim the exotic, it would be him. And yes, I too have a Silver Series Squire but a little later than his, from 87. It resonates in a way that a 25.5" scale guitar shouldn't. Only my 27" Hetfield Snakebyte has is beat but none of my Gibson or Tokai Korina V's do. It's magic in a bottle for a few hundred bucks. And just an FYI: I own the guitars I do because of their sound, not value. If I wanted a fancy pants all the bells, whistles with a cherry on top, I would have bought a custom shop Les Paul instead of the BMW S1000RR with all the fun extras that gets ridden during summer for no reason that it's an adrenaline rush on track - but I know the BMW delivers whilst most guitars, even the expensive ones, don't. Heck, I'd sell my Marshall's and Mesa if I had too for a high dollar guitar that sounded great. Once you find one that's louder, resonates more and just sounds better acoustically, then you know it's something special. At that point, it's not about what is labelled on the headstock...
