Seeing this video has been a real nail in the coffin as it were for me. I also have massive anxiety issues and seeing someone with those same sort of problems still be able to have so much fun was the final push I needed to buy my first open ticket for whenever they start up again. Thank you!

I'm watching this video after buying my first Empire ticket for E1 2022, and it gives me so much joy to see someone else who struggles with anxiety just throw themselves into something they love!! It's really given me the confidence to take my first event by the horns! Thank you for a great video!! :)

Welcome to Empire, from one of your approximate neighbours in Navarr (my tent is visible on the edge of one of the photos at the end of your video). I'm glad you had a good time, and I have a lot of respect for you for getting past your anxiety and going and doing the thing (not everybody can, I know, but it's a thing to be proud of nonetheless). Going in solo to a big game like Empire is often tricky - you're certainly not alone in feeling that. Having a group of other characters around who you know have your back is really helpful, even if most of what they provide is a source of chat and interesting snacks round the fire in the evening. Good luck trying to persuade some of your friends to come along :)

Welcome to Empire Rick! So glad you enjoyed yourself. I think I saw your van set up from where I was camped, we were well impressed (And very jealous) Also don't ever feel bad about things going over your head, especially during your first event. That happens all the time to new players, no matter how much prep they do before hand.

Hi Rick, I'm one of the photographers for Empire and I stumbled across your video, it was a really nice and insightful look into someone's first Empire. I too am an introvert with social anxiety so a lot of what you said resonated with me. I'm glad it was a mostly positive experience for you, will be keen to see how you feel about now you've had some time to reflect on the event. I agree that having a group of good mates you can hang around with is such a helpful part of it, photographing the event can get utterly draining for me (both physically and mentally) so just being able to hang out with people I know in a giant tent is a useful experience. Especially things like communal eating or just chatting. Coming in as a group with a goal can really get cogs moving and means there's a lot less resting on your shoulders, so I hope you get people involved! Keep an eye out for the 'Saturday lull' too, especially as an introvert. A lot of people go and nap or sit by themselves for an hour or so Saturday afternoon, as they find that a lot of their energy (social or otherwise) has been sapped from such an eventful weekend. It might help you out a bit, or to just sit with friends there. I see a few people have mentioned Artisan as a non combat Empire role, and yeah, I think you would be good at doing that. Something else I can also recommend is buying a small notebook and a pen to carry around with you to write down names you've gathered or events that have happened. I find I can never remember things, but my memory is jogged when I flip through the book. Or even just writing down handy things on the wiki before the event (I did that with The Virtues). Anyway, I don't want to overload you with advice. But this was a genuinely lovely video, hope to see your reflection posts and to see you in the field! Beth

I can't begin to tell you how excited for and proud I am of you!! Following your channel since almost the beginning and knowing the anxiety issues you have been suffering with, it just warms my heart seeing the excitement and almost non-stop smile you had on your face each time you came back to the van to explain what you've just experienced and what was next on the agenda. My sincere hope for you is that this becomes the successful outlet you need. I'd LOVE to see a video of you and some of your friends who you've introduced us to before experiencing this together. Congratulations on overcoming some big hurdles!!

Hey this is a fascinating video Rick. I can sympathise with your anxiety issues and feeling tired after making the effort as I feel exactly the same way my friend. But hats off to you for going to this event and taking the plunge! You did a great job explaining something I knew nothing about. Look forward to your follow up and perhaps another trip with some of your friends next time. Your videos are never dull and always something new so thanks for sharing your adventures.

Rick, you have a certain number of days/nights to live on this planet. You're solely responsible of enjoying them, making it count for you. I was a huge fan of your garden shows, but you have to like what you do, not me. If you find pleasure in the LARP events, Jesus f***ing Christ, do them, enjoy them, live them! You do not owe anybody else anything. I am a 52 year old European, former investment banker, who moved from Europe to the US, found trouble, heavy challenges and luck and happiness here. I still occasionally immerse (despite my 'old' age in a well-known online game (comparable to World of Warcraft) where I managed to become very high level over the last +/-12 years and particularly enjoy it (although I have a very rich and fulfilled social and personal life...). Who is there to judge? Make it count! If you are happy - and it looks like this makes you happy, go for it!!!

I know you've mentioned that you find it difficult venturing out too far beyond Dawn and areas that you are comfortable with, but just know that it would be a pleasure if you ever fancy taking a stroll over to Wintermark. Great video, and much respect to overcoming social anxiety, I am a retired military vet, and will be using a larp in Canada for kind of challenge to my difficulties, the event is called Bicolline, and is held in Canada, it lasts for 7days and has permanent buildings and such on site, I booked my package through a group called The Voyage North, and they take care of all the details of the trip ( pretty much), but the best thing about it has been they have a facebook group with all the new and returning participants for each year in advance, and it give you almost a year to get to know each other before the event ( at least as far as getting to know someone can go online), so if this is something that still intersts you I encourage you to check it out.

Be interesting to see how it developes & if it helps with your social anxiety issues? altho as a viewer not being able to see the things you describe makes it difficult to get a feel of it, which is frustrating as it comes across more as a chatty vlog about how a session of therapy went but in a fantasy setting. BTW, have you had any traditional forms of therapy or councilling like CBT to help with your issues? if so, was it useful or a waste if time? I've just started CBT

I have my first event at Empire in April (I'm part of the Urizen aaaa!!) I'm still a bit nervous since it's my first time doing anything like it, but watching this really put me at ease - a lot of people who make videos have been regular players there, so it was really nice to watch someone who was going for their first time! I was wondering if it is easy to find your way around? My friends say that there will be signs but I've never been very good at directions, so I'm a little worried about getting lost. (Also your leather bracers were really cool! Can I ask where you got them from?)

That’s great to hear you will be having your first event in April, I’m sure you will love it, hopefully the weather will be forgiving :-) Glad you enjoyed the video and it helped to put you at ease. It is reasonably easy to find your way around, but if at any time you get lost or are not sure where somewhere is, just ask pretty much anyone and they will be happy to point you in the right direction. The leather bracers, I purchased on site in one of the shops in Anvil.

You just need to learn to leave Rick and his anxiety in the van, when you go through the gate you're Ned and he doesn't have anxiety issues, it's acting and you can now be whoever you want to be. Quick Q about LARP; if one of the knights/fighters get killed in battle is that outcome pre-determined, if so how? If that's the end for that character does the actor get to come back as another character? I mean how seriously is death and such taken?
@rickvanman7 жыл бұрын
4468 great advice. Unfortunately I don't know the answer to your questions just yet :-(
@dansummers29657 жыл бұрын
It's not pre-determined, no: there's a set of rules that handle how combat works (covering things like how tough your character is, how hard they can swing a sword etc) but no overall "this person dies now" thing. If you charge into the middle of a mob of the enemy, and your character gets beaten to the floor and executed, then that's it, that character's dead. If you're lucky, though, some form of healer will probably get to you in time and get you back on your feet, and off you go again. If a character dies then, well, that character's dead. Their story's over, for better or worse. The player of that character can immediately go and create a new character at the admin desk and go back in as that new character, but they are a new character - they start from scratch in terms of money, skills and connections. Generally, Empire discourages players from creating Bob2 when Bob dies if you catch my meaning: you can play another character with the same group of people, but you're encouraged to make them different, so people can tell that they're not dealing with Bob any more when they see the player across a tent. (disclaimer: I'm just a player, albeit one with about 10 years of experience of larp games. I don't have any voice or authority at all with the people running Empire.)

The waistcoat came from Chow's Emporium (UK). I met Chow at the event and she's got a lot of really cool looking stuff :)

Im thinking about attending a Forest Argent event thats on this weekend. But anxiety is really keeping me from it. These events keep cropping up and I say "Yep ill go to this one." Then I never end up doing it. Im afriad of not being able to talk to any one and just ending up being on my own the whole time. :C

I reckon gooing with a friend will probably help a lot. Definitely worth considering.

Sadly nobody I know is into it, but I am thinking that I will just suck it up and go to this local event on saturday. Thinking about going as crew and not a player though, so that I can learn more about it before I commit to some of that expensive gear haha.

Very much hoping to attend in April. I'll probably be the one wandering around looking a bit lost and bewildered, so do feel free to come over and say hi! 😀

Terrific I would love to have a go. I'm not too good health wise Rick but I hope to get better soon. Got to stop using salt in my diet. Perhaps grow your hair, just a thought. Sending our love Geo & Isa.

There are other events/LARP festival run by other groups whom are ok with camaras, so long you are repectful and not push the camara in persons faces.
