Day one of Smash Ultimate, I was over at a friend's house. He had invited the rest of his extended group. We ordered pizzas and the pizza guy noticed we were playing the new smash and my friend asked if he wanted to play a round. He took his hat, off jumped in and played. That was a fucking great moment. Day one was really a phenomenon.

This day was so special for me. Back then, I was up all night waiting for the midnight drop; and I stayed up all night unlocking every character. 6 AM hit, and I had a field trip to go to; so I played against all my friends in the bus ride and kept unlocking people. My hours in advance definitely gave me a headstart and I won a LOT.

I had a similar experience when my friend's Dad, who was in the Royal Navy and stationed in the United States, brought a copy of Pokemon Gold back to the UK months ahead of the European release. Given that this was before the internet was in common use, it was absolutely wild to see all these brand new Pokemon.

I highly doubt Sakurai himself said Ridley was too big, it's a huge meme but why would shareholders and higher ups want some obscure character from a franchise that wasn't selling well at the time be in this game? The N64 Smash Bros was the game that I played at lot with friends back in middle school. Melee was amazing, and big part of my high school life, playing it at birthday parties and holidays! Brawl was alright, but I had fun memories, played it at a college dorm and even we had tournaments with other students, and my library even had a Wii and projected the game in a event room, and they done that with Mario Kart Wii for younger kids. The fourth game was really fun, mostly the 3DS version was a game I played while traveling, I played it on my lunch break and even my friends who had their own 3DS systems! And Ultimate is my favorite, I play it with my family, my wife bought me the game during Christmas because she wanted to play it!

The buildup to smash ultimate is one of the happiest parts of my childhood. This game is how I got close with my one of my siblings before I left for college/they moved across the country. I am very thankful for that. The first weekend this came out was exams week for my university and did I study? Nope! I played smash basically nonstop, and cut my way through a 60hr playthrough of WoL. Good times. Edit: I'll add that I've been playing smash since I learned how to hold an N64 controller, so this series has been core to me and my siblings for basically my whole life.

I got into Smash after seeing my cousin playing Melee when I went to visit him, and it’s definitely been a series near and dear to my heart since. Brawl is my personal favorite due to how much it brought to the series and its robust adventure mode making it feel like you were playing an official fanfiction, but in terms of polish and sheer quality I’d say Ultimate takes the cake, even if I stopped playing it like back in 2023 due to my friends dropping it outside of occasionally playing with family.

Melee was my first smash game so I have lots of nostalgia for it and remembering the times before I discovered competitive melee, it was fun just playing casually with items on and playing all the different modes. The speed of melee just made it extremely fun regardless of playing casually or competitively. When I got brawl, I remember thinking “why is this so slow” and I lowkey just wanted to stop playing but I shortly adjusted and grew to love it a lot as well. Smash 4 was the first one I was there from reveal to release also and the buildup was incredible. The week it released I went to every store in my city taking the city bus and it was sold out everywhere. Was only 13 at the time so I wasn’t familiar with pre ordering or buying things online at that point, just walking into stores and hoping it was in stock. Got it about a week later after immediately going from school to Best Buy, and I played that for a good year from that day on. With Ultimate I was more prepared, and went to Walmart at my local mall as soon as they opened and got it. Smash bros is surely my favourite game series oat, and I’m glad I got to experience all these moments as I always love reflecting on it all

So I was like…REALLY obsessed with Mario as a kid. Just everything Mario. On the DS I had, New Super Mario Bros, Mario Kart DS, Super Mario 64 DS, Mario Party DS, Mario Hoops 3 on 3, Mario & Sonic at the Winter Games (literally every Mario DS game was a banger can we talk about that). On the Wii I had Super Mario Galaxy 2, one of my all time favorites with Wii Sports Resort. And I would go on the Mario Wiki & just look at every single page from characters to enemies to games all of that. But there was one thing about the pages that always caught my interest. There was a section with the character on some sort of gold platform and a description under “Super Smash Bros”, and it stood out because usually Mario was all bright & stuff to me but once I got to those sections suddenly everyone was all detailed & dull & had these serious expressions & poses. It always caught my interest but I never understood what it was. One day I just randomly clicked on the link to the “Super Smash Bros Brawl” page and blown away wasn’t even the word. I was introduced to this new game with all these Mario characters, but they were standing alongside others that just left me in awe at how cool they looked, even if I didn’t know most of them. I knew the Pokémon characters because i watched the show on Cartoon Network, & I just happened to know who ROB was because of Mario Kart DS, but I was never introduced to Zelda or Kirby as a kid. I then dived deeper into research on the game, & soon found out that this was bigger than what I ever thought. Like I knew that THIS was THE Nintendo game, & I just had to have it in my possession. Then one fateful day my neighbors were having a garage sale and I was hanging out with their son. I walked across the table & there it was. Super Smash Bros Brawl. You ever have those games where you think they’re so cool but you never actually owned, played, or even seen in real life? I never expected to actually see this game’s box & disc with my eyes. The way I DASHED back to my grandparents house & asked them for $10 because I knew this was my only chance. I was able to get it, said F everybody, went back home & finally ran the game I’ve been seeing so much about. I still vividly remember seeing the intro for the first time. Just that first shot of all the characters looking at the sun would’ve been enough, but they just kept going. Mario has NEVER looked more badass than when he hit that pose. I saw Link for the first time & thought wow he looks cool. I remember thinking Kirby was a girl because pink/cute=girl in a kid’s mindset but he still looked pretty cool to me, just being introduced to all these characters alongside my favorite series was just ugh. Then I played it and my life changed. I was able to catch on pretty quick. I started off as Mario because duh but then started to experiment with the other characters I wasn’t too familiar with. I would just play each character & see how their movesets worked. I especially liked seeing how the Mario characters played because you never got to play them like this before. Lucas always stood out to me because in the midst of all these wacky & serious fighters, he was just a boy, & so was I. He quickly became my main. Seeing all the cool stages, & putting together that the symbols next to them & the characters meant they were from that specific series. I was confused as to why Yoshi, DK, & Wario had unique symbols from the other Mario characters, as I didn’t know they had their own spinoff series. Either way, this was how I learned about other series within Nintendo and latched onto basically every character. I played so much I eventually unlocked everyone just from VS matches alone. Then one random day I decided to click solo & saw a cool looking “Adventure Mode”. I was like ahh neat & opened it. No prior knowledge of Subspace Emissary might I add, & bro…..literally what is there to say?? Seeing all these characters who I’ve grown to love in this game I’ve grown to love now in a connected story with all of them teaming up against the villains, seeing all the different teamups & conflicts & who would fight who & who would get along with who, seeing the Mario cast alongside characters I was introduced to thinking yeah that makes sense……this story mode quite literally had me jittering. I would decline hanging out with friends after school or on the weekends because I knew I had to grind in Subspace. Ready to find out what the next cutscene was. Going full battle mode traversing through the levels & beating the bosses. Collecting those trophies that first got me interested in this series, Just….being there. Unforgettable. It wasn’t like any game-any THING I’ve ever experienced before & has yet to top. Like to say it was the coolest thing ever is a complete understatement. It was a staple in my life. I am a brawl defender forever & ever. Of course my love for Mario & Smash Bros grew exponentially & I continued to get new installments, but it was this game that really influenced my life.

For a while my main memories with smash bros were unlocking Dr. Mario, Luigi, Jigglypuff, and occasionally Falco or Young Link in Melee on repeat because of my only GameCube memory card being a MadCatz one which deleted its save data every week or so. I was like 10 or something at the time, so I still had fun, but it took me over 5 years to get a proper official memory card and finally unlock the full cast.

I started with Melee and have played every game onwards. I’d say my fondest memories were with Brawl just because I had everyone playing it back then. Also, I was in middle school and didn’t have any real worries back then lol

Grew up with used copies of Brawl and Smash 4 (Wii U), but I really got invested in Nintendo with Ultimate and the Switch. Been playing matches with friends during lunch since middle school and now I'm graduating high school in a couple weeks. Man I love this series...

Fortunate to have played the Smash games in order of release at the time they were released. I will never forget how insanely blown away I was by Melees physics engine, the speed and weight. And what a giant dissapointment Brawl was to play when compared to Melee....Brawl is by far the worst by the cheer gameplay, but it does make up for it with a ton of content. FYI we continued playing Melee regularly until 2008 when Brawl came out, and even THEN we'd still pop it in from time to time that entire year. By early 2010 the Mango hype was coming up in Melee (I'm Socal local) so we switched back and went from there, scene still thrives. :)

Because of the gap between releases, Smash Bros can be used to look at different stages of my life. My friends and I played pretend Smash Bros Brawl on the playground in elementary school because we were so excited for it. Played it for years. I got Smash 64 on Virtual Console on my own. Smash 4 came out my freshman year of high school and we played it for 4 years. Ultimate came out my freshman year of college. No other game series will mean so much to me, because no other games have so many good times with so many friends.

what ive always adored abot scott is he too is a fan of brawl. everybody hates that game and i think the random tripping mechanic gave it a bad rap. its got alot of extra content and collectables, and it was the first smash with watio and hes got that special move where he rides his motorcycle back and forth and crashes it and you throw the tire. the first time i pulled it off everybody i was playing with were screaming "NOOOO WATCH OUT HES GOT THE TIRE" and i felt like a fucking god.

Man, I remember the whiplash i felt going from melee to brawl as a kid. I didn't play melee completively, but damn the gameplay felt so much more fluid. It took a while to get used to brawl's molasses physics.

I was also one of those weird people who mostly played Ultimate for the single player. I got all of the spirits as well, although I didn't keep up with that once they started releasing DLC characters. I enjoyed playing through World of Light. It's all I really needed from a smash bros single player adventure. Of course, we will always ask for more...more cutscenes, more custom enemies, custom stages (maybe with some platforming), more detailed overworld, etc. Given the budget they were working with though, I think spirits were a pretty smart way to at least evoke the feeling of fighting these hundreds of characters.

I remember getting the first Smash Bros for Christmas after having rented it from Blockbuster and my brothers and I playing the shit out of it. Great Christmas morning. As far as series progression, I think Melee was the biggest improvement in a sequel, Brawl was a bit of a let down because of balancing issues, but would still rather play that than Melee because there are more characters, Smash on the Wii U and 3DS was amazing, but limiting due to the consoles, Smash Ultimate is the definitive Smash experience

I remembered that I was so hyped for the game, I begged my mother to gift me the Smash Bros Limited Edition for Christmas. But since she tends to not gift me games on Christmas + the fact that the Limited Editions were already double the price, I doubted she would give one to me. She even adressed me on it like a week before Christmas saying something like "Hey, I can try and get you that Edition, but it will not probably be on Christmas". Then on Christmas Day, I only had one present: The Super Smash Bros Ultimate Limited Edition. Somehow, she managed to find it for the regular Price in a store on time for Christmas. I was so happy and this is to date the best Chrsitmas present that I have ever received :,)

Super Smash Brothers was my first smash game. The only two Nintendo 64 games from Nintendo I actually completed were smash and Super Mario 64. Unfortunately I grew up as a PlayStation guy and after my Nintendo 64 broke I never got another Nintendo system until my family bought a Nintendo Wii. And it wasn't until recently that I found a copy of Super Smash Brothers Brawl at a GameStop of all things. I proceeded to boot up the game and I then played 8 hours worth of its single player content immediately upon booting it up. No joke I sat down and just played the game continuously and had an absolute blast. The amount of content brawl has and The elusive unlockables really make it fun to just play over and over and over again, even if the single player content can feel a little bit harsh it's still a blast to play. Competitive wise I never cared for smash because I feel like games like Dragon Ball fighterz, Tekken, and Street Fighter are the best ways to play a competitive fighting game( that and getting into a fighting game that has a really robust community of friendly people well also having a good amount of solid mechanics is difficult in itself😢) But I do see the appeal and I can't deny that matches can be tense if they are one-on-one. But the only Nintendo console I still own to this day is a Nintendo Wii and brawl is the only smash game I have bothered finding and collecting. It's just that fun play.

I started with Melee, but got way into the hype with Brawl. The love for the hype kept going till Ultimate. I will miss looking forward to announcements and hoping or guessing new characters. Everyone I played with back in the day still do. (Some even took off work to play it on release days) But my fave memory is finding Yoshi. I played with him in smash for almost 20 years. I still wish we got Crash Bandicoot in this game.

When melee came out, I remember walking to several stores after school to purchase it, it was the release day, but for some reason the posted release day everywhere was never correct, but the shipping day, so the game came out the day after. The whole posted shipping day as the release day I never understood and i'm glad that is gone.
