Here's a little fact about this album: on the CD version "It's On!" is actually track 13, the album starts after 12 silent tracks of 5 seconds each. The band decided to start the record with one minute of silence as a tribute for a fan, a boy named Justin who was dying of cancer and asked to meet the band as his last wish: the song "Justin" is also dedicated to him. I know it's very sad, but I've always found this heartwarming and I wanted to share it with you, it shows how much the band has always cared for their fanbase ^^ On a less depressing note, seeing your reaction was cool as always, even though I think the first two albums are better, Follow The Leader certainly has some real bangers! Now I can't wait for the Issues reaction: get ready for another shift in the band's sound, expect more electronic stuff, more heaviness, and a lot of skits and interludes put between the actual songs! Oh, and another big hit called "Falling Away From Me" ;)

That's so interesting, I guess those first 12 silent tracks are omitted on modern streaming platforms like Spotify. That's really endearing about Justin too, it shows a lot of character to do something like that for a fan. I cannot wait for Issues next, it sure seems like Korn embraces a new sound on each album so I'm sure that one will have lots of surprises in store!

Now it's clear where these empty tracks without sound came from, I bought this album on CD in Russia probably in 1999-2000 and then I thought it was some kind of glitch, bug, mistake of those who re-recorded the disc for sale, and it turns out it made such dramatic sense. Thank you for telling me.

"Earache My Eye" was originally a "secret song" on the album. It starts after 2 minutes of silence once My Gift to You is over. It's a cover song and was originally written by Cheech & Chong. The band all swapped instruments when they recorded it, Jonathan Davis on Drums, David the drummer on Bass and Fieldy the bass player did all the deep voice vocals, and also Cheech Marin of Cheech & Chong did the main vocals for the song.

Fun facts: this album is considered their breakthrough. It’s their best selling album to date. The way it was made was absolute chaos though 😂 - Jonathan Davis recorded vocal tracks for ‘Its On’ while an orgy was going around him - they spent 60k in alcohol (not even drugs included) during the three month recording process, JD required an 8-Ball before he stepped in the booth. - all those weird sounds are coming from different pedal effects on the guitars, they experimented a lot of things here. - Pretty is about when the singer was a mortician and saw a body of a 11 month old that was raped and beaten to death - Justin is about a kid who was dying to cancer, almost an ode to their fans Up next is my favorite album, Issues, which is a tad slower, more atmospheric, a little more guitar heavy, the bass lines are killer, and it’s quite a bit more of an emotional ride with Jonathan Davis and his mental state at the time, rather the ‘flexing’ they did on FTL.

@@mollyesanborn Some more interesting context for the time around this album is that it kicked off their "family values tour". 2 of the guest vocalists were also part of the tour (ice cube and fred durst of limp bizkit). Furthermore, 2 notable industrial acts participated, Rammstein and Orgy. This was around the time of the height of industrial mainstream popularity in the US.

There was a weird little period when Korn, Linkin Park, Deftones these guys were classified in that "nu metal" category, they were mixing in some electronic/turn table rap-metal but they were all like 20 year olds who got a taste of money, travelling the world, Korn had the Anime theme on the visuals on this record Linkin Park had the Gundam references in their videos (I saw them in Tokyo, the crowd went berserk). It's weird how lots of bands with young members get dumped on, but 20 years later people recognize their genius. When my neighbors kids band play in their garage I'm there. Support local kids making music.

This was their big album that blew them up into MTV, radio and they were everywhere. I mean, the fact that they got Ice Cube in 1997-1998 (don't know when it was recorded) was mind blowing to me as a teen. I was late to them. I started hearing them on the radio in the late 90s alongside everything Nu Metal. Limp Bizkit blew up too that year. I was a kid still. But I was already obsessing over music. Even growing up super broke, single parent, all that, I would manage to use a sound system someone gave us to recorded my own mixtapes on cassette. I'd have to hit record right when a song I wanted would start. It would also cut off early usually with the DJ speaking over the song. So annoying. But I kept them in mind. A few years passed and I moved out of the US maybe 2002 or so. In my year living in Colombia I met a guy in this small town who loved Nu Metal and other rock bands. And I was HEAVY into Linkin Park. I knew all the lyrics and everything lol. All albums including the new Meteora at the time. I'm rambling, sorry. But yeah, he got me obsessed with Limp Bizkit and Korn at the time. After that year there I moved to France. I hated not having anything in English. I missed the US so much growing up. Still haven't gone back. But music was the one thing I could carry with me everywhere to make me feel at home, almost. I'd go to this library where I could take home a few albums at a time. I'd go there so much that this girl would suggest stuff to me. It's how I listened to Rage Against The Machine, Audioslave, Marilyn Manson a bit, etc. Such good memories. I'd sit by the small speakers and just listen to albums for hours. Korn became my favorite band for a bit back then. When "Take A Look In The Mirror" came out (2003, 6th studio album) I was in love!

One of the reasons Korn sounded heavier than other bands at the time is that they were one of the first to play seven string guitars. Ibanez had made some for guitar virtuoso Steve Vai in the early 90s and Korn used them to get that deeper, heavier sound. And that lead to tons of bands after them tuning down and using seven, eight, nine string guitars, etc. (including bands like Meshuggah and Deftones). It's kind of fun to think that a crazy guitar dreamed up by an 80s shred icon lead to the birth of the nu metal sound.

Really awesome video!! I think that Follow The Leader was the start of Korn heading into more of a mainstream/pop sort of style of music but still not leaving their roots of heavy, intense riffs and style of music. While this album brought many intense and mellow parts to it, it’s also one of the first introductions of Rap rock to many rock/metal fans. By the way Feed Durst is the lead singer of the popular Limp Bizkit, they’ve released 6 Studio albums and were one of the pioneers of the Nu Metal Genre along with Korn, Linkin Park, etc. I recommend giving Limp Bizkit a try, despite their unpopularity in the rock/metal community. Their first album, ‘Three Dollar Bill Y’all’ was a good debut, but probably their peak in recognition was when they released ‘Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water’ (2 albums I highly recommend checking out by the way). But still this video was really great Keep up the good work!! 👍

It’s a very moving song lyrically. 3. Follow The Leader 1. It’s on „What a fantastic start to this album“ - Exactly! Great Build up in the intro, great main riff, great vocals, catchy chorus, kick-ass ending, the perfect way to say: "Here we go again!" 2. Freak on a Leash Loved the look on your face when you start listening to it, because when I was 14, I found this song in a folder of my brother, who just downloaded all kinds of stuff from the charts but wasn’t into rock or metal at all. I kept listening to this song, it sounded weird, but I couldn’t stop listening to it. It’s the song that got me introduced to what would become my favorite band: Korn. 3. Got the Life Agree, the percussions are awesome. Another great song. With this song, Korn have shown they can sound mainstream and still like Korn and still awesome, and even more so with the previous track. 4. Dead Bodies Everywhere „This tracks sounds more like their earlier albums“ → Here you have more of the darker vibes that Korn are known for, but presenting it in a more mainstream way. Great song, with this track they show that they can even sound heavy without the screams that Korn-Fans got used to in the previous two albums. 5. Children of Korn This song is not as great as the first four, just an „okay“-song, but having a song featuring Ice Cube is a big plus to get introduced to a mainstream crowd, so this is more political, one could argue. But for guys like me who grew up listening to Hip Hop, having Ice Cube on this album was a cool thing, even if the so song is just so-so in my eyes. „I like his vocals on this part here“ -> yes, the only part of the song that I really like a lot. 6. BBK I think you described that groovy flow thing here very well. I needed to listen to the song several times and take heed to the lyrics more carefully to really appreciate it. And while it is not as great as the first four songs on the album, it is still really good. Love the bridge and the way Jon screams gibberish here in particular. 7. Pretty A decent song where Korn introduces the way they compose very dark lyrics to the mainstream crowd, but the song kind of sounds more positive, maybe to still at least sound mainstream enough while keeping the dark meanings that we know Korn for from the previous two albums. I think this also reflects what you said with visceral effect while at the same time being so restrained. As for your comparison to Blind, never came to my mind, but now that you brought it up, the vocals in the verses are more slow paced in a similar way like in the song Blind, also a similar rhythm. 8. All in the Family Jonathan Davis recently said in an interview that this is the worst song they ever made. And I almost agree, certainly and by far the worst song on this album, and maybe the first really bad Korn-Song ever made. Love Limp Bizkit (Fred Durst is the singer, I can imagine that you would like their 2nd and 3rd album), hat an opportunity they had to write a good song together, but it only shows how they partied too hard. Fred Durst and Head even got so drunk, Fred told him he knows how to do tatoos, so Head wanted to have a „Korn“-tattoo on his back, but Fred was too drunk and now for the rest of his life the tattoo on Head's back looks like „Horn“, not Korn. I think something similar happened when they tried to record this song and look what came out. 9. Reclaim my Place Agree with the Rhythm part, another cool song, especially the bridge. In my opinion underrated, and I wished they would have played this song live more often. I know what you mean with what he is doing with his voice, like in that „What the fuck“-Moment in the end, like he is grinding his teeth while uttering words, which makes us perceive the anger as more authentic. 10. Justin The intro is not really distorted, just a different effect, before this incredibly awesome, heavy riff starts, another one of my favorite heavy-riff-moments of Korn, but the song all in all I find only okay. The meaning is very deep though. The song is about a kid named Justin, who was sick and would soon die. His wish was to meet Korn, and they decided to write this song for him. 11. Seed Such a nice chorus. „They just completely stopped it“ loved the reaction, it reminded me of you saying recently that with Korn you can never feel comfortable, because they make you keep standing on your toes. When the song stops for a second after the wild, crazy gibberish he utters, this is one of the best example ;) 12. Cameltoesis Nice atmosphere, standing out with its style, as this is more of a hip-hop-song. I like the chorus, but all in all just an okay-song. 13. My Gift to You Korn are great in wrapping an album up with a fitting final song. Here Korn almost get heavy in life is peachy-style, the screams for sure get close to that and this song souns much less mainstream, despite the clean singing of the chorus. And one thing had been missing so far, what we had in the previous two albums: Bagpipes. Good to have them back even in this mainstream version of Korn. Earache My Eye Just a silly bonus track for fun’s sake. It was fun listening to once, but never felt like listening to it again. The album is so much softer than life is peachy, but probably my nr. 4 of best korn albums and of my all time favorite albums in general. My favorites are the first 4 tracks and probably the final track as well. „Justin“, one of your favorites, this time is not among my least favorites, but also not bad (with a deep meaning and cool main riff). I am fully with you as far as It’s on and Dead Bodies Everywhere is concerned. And other tracks I really dig are BBK, Reclaim my Place and Seed. I think it's easier to say what I don't like. "All in the Family", "Earache My Eye" were the the worst moments of this album and Cameltoesis was not necessary.

"Follow The Leader" is definitely a mixed bag, but it has "Freak on a Leash" and "Reclaim My Place" which are top 5 favorite Korn songs for me, the stories behind "Pretty" and "Justin" are heart wrenching and there are a couple of features that have interesting back stories. Ice Cube originally wrote "Wicked" the song Korn covers with Chino on "Life is Peachy". They wanted Cube but he was busy so he made up with it for his feature on "Children of the Korn". (probably stated in the comments but) Fred Durst is the lead singer/MC for Limp Bizkit, he was discovered by Korn when he was a tattoo artist in Jacksonville Florida and gave his demo to Head (Korn's rhythm guitarist) and Fieldy (Korn's bassist). The band was blowing up at the time they recorded this album, and heavy into drug use, which makes the follow up album "Issues" (my favorite) so impactful as it's Jonathan Davis wrestling with his sobriety and maintaining it, while also fighting his depression and social anxiety. There is a XXX rated reason for why Davis sounds the way he does on "It's On" but I won't repeat it here (LOL). Munky (the lead guitarist) fell in love with FX pedals during the recording of "Follow the Leader" which switched up their sound in a major way becoming a massive fixture for every album going forward. While it might not be a favorite it was still good to see you with a new Korn video this week, as always, keep up the great work!

A mixed bag for sure, but this album has some amazing high points! I really love how on certain tracks they fused their raw intensity with the polished production. It's On is a great example, it's got so much explosive energy but it sounds smoother than their previous two albums (and someone else in the comments mentioned what was happening in the studio when they recorded that one, haha). People keep saying that Issues takes a darker turn, almost like the comedown after the high they were on with Follow The Leader. I'm definitely intrigued to hear it!

My previous comment is too long. I'm sorry. I just love talking about music and remembering when I was young. I'm about to be 30. It blows my mind. I still feel 23 lol. But I wanted to add that this album was heavily Hip-Hop inspired. They, in a way, helped define Nu Metal and brought it to the mainstream in a huge way. If I recall correctly, they were managing to get more requests for their songs that NSYNC, Backstreet Boys, Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears, all that pop shit. This was on TLC which was a programme on MTV where people called in to request music videos every week or whatever. Korn... out of all the bands they were bigger than pop stars?! Still crazy to think about. Their Hip-Hop influence goes way back though, especially with some of the members. They covered the Ice Cube song "Wicked" in their second album Life Is Peachy. It featured Chino Moreno from Deftones, remember? So yeah, this album blew them up worldwide, I'd say. They infamously had a huge budget to make the album and they spent a lot of it on partying. Like 50k on just beer or alcohol in general! Imagine! Jonathan Davis ended up going sober shortly after this. Stopped drinking. But the videos from their recording process and touring is wild. Like Jon swirling his finger in dirty toilet water to then stick it in his throat to make himself throw up. Then continue partying. Wild. The following album, Issues will blow your mind even more. Probably my favorite album of theirs. They dialed back the Hip-Hop a bit and brought an insane album. They were also constantly touring and making albums. To think a year later they had a new album already is crazy. After Issues they were burnt and had to take time off. So "Untouchables" didn't come until 2002. But again, a year after that, "Take A Look In The Mirror" came. Final album with all original members as Brian 'Head' Welch left in 2004 and David Silvia left in 2005 after their album "See You On The Other Side". He ruined his relationship with the band and although given years to come back, he chose to never apologize and return. Oh well. I did miss him and I would've loved to see him stay but he didn't like the direction they took. He didn't like Issues or most of what they did after. After 2003, they never sounded the same. And they started experimenting which is an era I love too. After 2010 they kinda fell off for me. I still have gone to see them live though. Amazing performances.

No comment is too long, thanks for taking the time to write them! I love reading other people's thoughts on and experiences with music. You gave some really insightful info on Korn in this one, thanks. Sure sounds like they went crazy during the recording process for Follow The Leader. Freak on a Leash was my first taste of Korn’s music in 1999, and I’ve been in love with it ever since. It did take some getting used to at first because it was so much darker, heavier, and more hardcore that anything I ever heard before. What’s amazing about this album is that as much as people love it, they were partying their asses off when they were recording it. Munky, one of the guitarists, said they spent $27,000 on alcohol at the time but I’ve heard some rumors that it was more like $60,000. Either way, it’s amazing that they didn’t all die from alcohol poisoning.

JD's vocals are great as ever and the scatting is at its most prominent which I love. I put it between the first two but I can't stress enough how much I love Its On, Freak on a Leash, Got the Life, Children of the KoRn (rhyming kids with itself twice then with bitch is great), BBK and My Gift to You. Here we go with another album of which I have lot of memories. I was absolutly OBSESSED with the last song My Gift to You, and the crazy hidden track Earache My Eyes, which I still consider today as one of the best and craziest hidden tracks ever !! Because yes, originally it's a hidden track in the album, it's not part of the classic track listing, and it was a crazy cover of a song from a thrash metal band called ScatterBrain. Just for this hilarious hidden track, the album is worth the listen !
