As a huge Pumpkins fan couldn't help but smile throughout this whole video, always nice to see someone start to get into them (also, Gish is one of my favorite albums of theirs as well). That said, if you also enjoy Siamese Dream as much as it seems you did with Gish, I'd strongly advise you to listen to Pisces Iscariot before Mellon Collie, it includes some of their best work and also serves as a nice introduction to the next Pumpkin's era. Thanks for making these!

Aww yeah I think you're gonna have fun with these albums! Jimmy was originally a jazz drummer, so he has really great feel and tone - he can do a lot with a simple drum part and just make it sound amazing, and they really let the drums shine on this album. I love this album! It grows on me more as time goes by. You can hear so much classic rock tribute throughout. The thing that stands out to me is the use of what I call the Jimmy Hendrix chord (E7#9) which is seen all over Siva. Billy's strat sounds more like a normal strat since it was prior to using Lace Sensor pickups which have a more modern sound. I like this album for being their weird psychedelic take on a lot of standard hard rock music. Its great.

It is indescribably fun to watch someone from the new gen listen to these records for the first time : ) the early Pumpkins are bottled magic. I had so much nostalgia watching this. You have a great ear for parsing out the 'ingredients' of these albums. The Pumpkins were and still are one of a kind. They somehow blend together psych rock, prog, shoegaze, goth, metal etc. yet somehow manage to make it all into a cohesive whole. Tristessa and I Am One were like my anthems as a disaffected teen haha

I'm so glad to see you taking the path through the Pumpkin patch. IMO, Jimmy Chamberlin's background is one of the things that really separates the Pumpkins from their peers. Some other weird connections: this was produced by Butch Vig, who would immediately after produce Nirvana's Nevermind (and later found the band Garbage). Courtney Love was dating Billy Corgan at the time and appears in the Rhinoceros video. Billy Corgan, infatuated with the sound of My Bloody Valentine, would hire their engineer Alan Moulder to mix the next album, Siamese Dream. Chino Moreno, a favorite of yours from what I've seen, joined the Pumpkins at their 30th anniversary show (which I had the pleasure of attending) to perform "Snail" - kzbin.info/www/bejne/pnyxh6WgoriEr80

I've been a big fan for the longest time, but not having started at the beginning like you did, I hadn't actually given Gish much of a chance, and I realise that now you're reacting to it. It's better than I remember, must have some growing-on-you quality on there. Snail surprised me, especially. But more than any individual song, it does just come together as a whole very well. Would still say my only favourite off it is Rhinoceros (among some really strong competition from other albums) but others have definitely gained more appreciation. I think Daydream would sound really nice immediately before Disarm (which you may not have heard yet). Hey, thinking about it... I have a lot of such thoughts when it comes to the Pumpkins. Maybe they're the band that started me on one of my favourite things to do - mixing songs back-to-back. I think so actually! They do cover such a wide range in total, and this album is a good bit of a clue-in to that, with its own bit of range. This'll be quite a journey, anyway. Do make sure to include Pisces Iscariot, as although it's often viewed as a side-album, it was intended as a main entry, as well as Teargarden, which began as an experiment with not being a traditional album format but basically ended up as one after the thing they were trying with it didn't work out. I will be very interested when you get to Zeitgeist, which was not well received at all but imo shines on re-examination and made some of my absolute favourite tracks of theirs (although mostly from the non-album material during that time), and Oceania, my favourite album of theirs and I think their most consistent... both long after a lot of people had written them off as so pared-down as to be a nostalgia act or pretense. But Billy's always at the heart of the songwriting and to my reckoning it never fails to show, and always makes for something interesting, even if I have my greater and lesser picks among them. People in general are too keen to be dismissive of groups beyond their standout success times, and this band's definitely one of those examples. Some of their best songs haven't even had a studio version yet (and may never, sadly). The guy's the only songwriter I can think of, in a similar style, that seems just like me - someone who simply can't stop writing songs, like they just spill from you and you can't turn it off. That's how it seems anyway, from a fan perspective. Always connected a lot from that seeming-relatability, as well as the music itself evoking emotion.
@onezerostar
@onezerostar Жыл бұрын
Thank you for saying that about Zeitgeist. That album is fantastic, some of Jimmy's best drum work, and Corgan's guitars are just on fire throughout. That album deserves much more love than it typically gets!
@Torthrodhel
@Torthrodhel Жыл бұрын
@@onezerostar Corgan's singing on it is often overlooked too. Might be among his best. My favourite Pumpkins song is Superchrist (and it perfectly represents my favourite side of them stylistically), and screw it, I don't care why it was made - Glow is underrated too, awesome tune. Off the album itself, That's the Way is beautiful, I still dig Starz, one of the few songs so obviously click-tracked that actually seems to benefit from it rather than it being a failing (and clearly a choice, given such a talented drummer) - those howling high notes with the relentless crash going on! Such a mood. United States has grown on me a lot too. Doomsday Clock always kicked ass and still does. Bleeding the Orchid is probably one of the best things they ever did just musically, if you can get past the thematic awkwardness of it referring to masturbation, which... cool whatever but not the best mood-fit maybe? Still love it though - that sort of swimmy damaged-VHS-mimicking pitch-bending always gets me, and best intro kick-in ever, right. Seven Shades of Black's a bit of a sleeper, too. I think a lot of people got all wrapped up in who was or wasn't in the band or whatever but I never really cared much about backstage drama so long as my ears got what they wanted, and they consistently have.

Gish is easily my favorite album by The Smashing Pumpkins. Track 2 Siva, after the Hindu God, so pronounced Sheeva. Gish is a great example of dynamics utilized in music. I'd say after Gish, I can't say that I like any Smashing Pumpkins album anywhere near as much as that album. Corgan is a great songwriter but I just never got into anything a lot after that, other than their song "Zero". If you listen to the rest of their albums you will see that no other Pumpkins album really comes close to their first album in the amount of soul they put it into it. The song they put into the soundtrack for the movie "Singles" was amazing as well. Gish to me is their premiere album.

One of my all time favorite albums!!! IMO, their best, right out the gate swinging. Great example of some good ol classic rock and a reminder of doing so little can go a long way!!! It also helps that you have a well rounded, very talented band to provide this morsel of ear candy. Siamese is amazing as well, and melancholy works for me now, which for many years it did not. Even to this day, anything after melancholy, it is very hit and miss. They really started to lose me after their third album, goes without saying that over time they had their songs that were appealing, but as a whole album, speaking for myself, it was just nothing in comparison to the first 3 albums. Loved the reaction as always!

Glad you enjoyed the reaction! Gish was a great introduction to Smashing Pumpkins, you put it perfectly in how they manage to do so much with so little on this record. They know how to use minimalistic instrumentals at times to create that much more of an impact. Really impressive too considering this is their debut. Can't wait to hear more from them! :)

Along with Deftones, this was one of my favorite bands in high school. I believe they were also an influence on Chino to some extent. You should definitely check out The Cure as well. They have a very diverse discography and have influenced many bands over the last 20 years. And also more in the prog direction, check out Between the Buried and Me, Periphery, and The Contortionist (who have obvious Deftones influences). Those all have perfect albums to listen to cover to cover.

Gish is a pretty good album, it's Smashing Pumpkins most underrated album. It's not Siamese Dream, or Mellon Collie and the infinite sadness. Though like the Alice In Chains self titled album, it has a unique charm to it.

For me, Gish is the discovery of a beautiful raw material. Siamese Dream is taking that material to an expert craftsman to coax out the material’s fullest potential.

The little twinkly sounds you hear in the background of "Daydream" are from the little bracelets Billy was wearing while playing the acoustic guitar. The "I'm Going Crazy" part at the very end was actually a hidden track ... lotta bands used to tack them onto the end of their CDs in the 90s (and they wouldn't be listed on the track listing, so it'd be like a little surprise), but that concept pretty much died when digital music started taking over. Get ready for Siamese Dream!

Daydream is my favorite track off Gish. It hints at some great orchestral work to come on their future albums. That twinkling you hear is Billy Corgan’s bracelet rattling as he played the guitar. The producer, Butch Vig, complained about being able to hear it and Billy just said, “Well it’s in time, right?”

In 1990 (or 89'?) I passed Billy Corgan in a trashy club in Salem Oregon that they were playing at. I was headed into the bathroom and he was headed out. I said "sup" and he said "sup" back. Lol

"Gish" is an incredible album. I don't think there is anything on it that isn't fully-realized and it's right up there with "Siamese Dream." I used to listen to them both in tandem in the 1990's. It's a wonder that "Gish" isn't as highly regarded as "Siamese Dream." Although, I love "Mellon Collie" I like "Gish" as a whole much better, because it doesn't have a lot of 'throw away' tracks on it like the "Mellon Collie" does.

I think Mellon Collie's tracks are all brilliant. Gish is clearly a pre-realised effort, and siamese dream is their breakthrough, more 'fully formed' album and sound. Mellon Collie is their Magnum Opus though.

The Gish era to their Machina era were the golden years of the Smashing Pumpkins. I wouldn't recommend anything after that but as LeVar Burton used to say in every episode of Reading Rainbow, "you don't have to take my word for it."

Gish and Siamese Dream are 2 of my favorite albums of all time. Back since the first days they both released. I also strongly suggest their B-Sides album ( Pisces Iscariot) that has material created during that exact same era of albums. I also really enjoy their double album Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. But... that's about it for me and that band. Billy's voice just gets way too nasally sounding every album afterwards (in my opinion). Even during some of Mellon Collie honestly. But some of my favorite Pumpkins songs exist on the 2nd disc of Mellon Collie so I do love that half of the album nearly as much as their first 2 releases.
