Fun fact: River's Cuomo (Lead singer/guitar) he dumbed down his guitar playing in tge studio because he wanted the blue album to be a pop rock album. So much so that one day when he thought no one was around the producer heard River's shredding on his guitar and when confronted River's told the producer to keep it a secret.

One of the most replayable albums of all time! Whenever I try to listen to a track on it I end up eventually listening to the whole thing for quite some time. The song concepts and structures are so fun to listen to, the songwriting paints the scene well. Also a great album to learn instruments to, helped me learn bass and drums. They were technically proficient but not overly complex. Pinkerton is fantastic as well, not quite as accessible from the start, but eventually digs deep and is just as rewarding.

I interpret Undone the sweater song as a metaphor for someone's social anxiety. The sweater is the mind and the more undone it becomes, the more the person loses their ability to interact. The lyrics feel like a person desperately trying to start a conversation with someone but failing horribly. That also explains why you hear voices of people at the start of the song as it's like the person is at a party. Also funny how you mentioned the album has a beachy feel considering Rivers Cuomo (lead singer and guitar) is a known fan of the beach boys.

That's a really interesting interpretation, it makes a lot of sense though!
@bovinejoni4243

Not many people realize that the song isn’t a metaphor at all. It’s actually a very literal song about a period in his life when his experimenting with sweater rompers made him a great many enemies.

After all the sadness of grunge - and Cobain's suicide - Weezer brought a fun vibe back to rock. But you're right, there's a definite sadness underneath. That would become more explicit in the next album, Pinkerton. Rivers Cuomo has a lot of abandonment issues, which you can hear in Say It Ain't So, which is all about his father's alcoholism.

What I love about this album is that it is such a fun album to listen to musically and the lyrics are so real and authentic. It gives a glimpse into the mind of a social outcast; with the hard stuff he is going through on a daily basis in terms of loneliness and isolation, as well as the fantasy of living a better life with some hope sprinkled in. I have always resonated with Rivers lyrics on this album which is why I can always go back to it and never get tired of it.

I LOVE THIS SO MUCH. I love how the KZbin algorithm gave me this video. It's amazing to see her hear these songs for the first time. This, front-to-back, is one of my favorite albums of all time. No lie, I put it up there with Abbey Road as a comprehensive full-listen album now that we have Spotify and can stream any random song in the world. I remember listening to this album walking home from the bus stop on my CD player and it wouldn't stop skipping during Surf Wax America and I played it like 5 times in a row haha.. not to be a boomer about it, but *when I was a kid* we had to walk 15 minutes to catch the school bus instead of getting dropped off out front of our houses.. and we listened to music on CDs (although this was obviously on cassette as well) and even with "anti-skip technology" if you didn't walk super slow/gently the songs skipped ALL THE TIME.

One of my top ten albums of all time. This album literally changed my musical life and got me started learning guitar. It was 1998 and I had just moved in with my cousin's family. He was really into punk music and had a copied cassette tape of this album, but it was missing the last song. Something about being 15 years old and hearing this for the first time was life changing. It took me a few months to save up to buy the CD but once I did I was able to hear Only in Dreams for the first time. It literally made me teary eyed because of it's beauty, and that was it for me. This album was the best thing I'd ever heard (besides the Beatles albums). Deftones were the next band to do that to me a couple years later when I heard 'Change' for the first time on the radio. So anyway, my cousin used to play the songs on this album on his guitar and I just had to learn too. I devoured guitar chords over several months and I finally was able to play the songs. I would never have learned to play guitar or write songs if it hadn't been for this album. It's got a special place in my heart. It's funny that you say this album isn't very polished because it's actually more polished and over-produced than their second album Pinkerton, which many people consider to be their best. Also, I love how you picked up on the beach vibe because Rivers Cuomo was a big Beach Boys fan. Anyway, I'm really happy to see you appreciate this album Molly :)

Pretty cool that Sweater Song is your favorite track as that was their very first single/music video they released. But it was their second single and music video that would get everyone's attention. I was in High School in '94 when I heard Sweater Song and from then on, Weezer became my favorite. I've heard many reviews of Blue, Pink, Green... all their albums but never heard it dissected and analyzed so eloquently. Seeing your reactions to hearing their songs for the first time brought back wonderful memories. So nostalgic it felt like I was rediscovering them all over again--thank you for that. Can't wait until you hear Pinkerton and hope you eventually get to one of their recent album's, OK Human. P.S. Saw them this year at Hella Mega Tour and though they're old, Rivers still has the pipes and the band still rocks.

I love seeing young people discover old stuff like this (lol “old stuff”, I’m old stuff) and appreciating it. I like how you recognized the problematic lyrics but didn’t dismiss it outright. No one else and The World Has Turned And Left Me Here are two parts to a story, where he acknowledges his shitty attitude in No One Else causes him to lose her and he realizes his error and is heartbroken. Rivers isn’t afraid to be brutally honest about his feelings and that’s what makes great art great. Everyone has felt problematic feelings, but not everyone is willing to admit that, let alone immortalize them in song. Wait till you hear Pinkerton lol that album is brilliant but full of all kinds of fuq’d up stuff. But it’s great, nonetheless. Thanks for the video. I quite enjoyed it.

They’re the first band I saw in concert, they were the soundtrack to my senior year in high school and I got to play with them back in 2008(ish)...whatever year they were touring the Red album. Although the quality of their music has significantly declined since Maladroit, they’ll forever be one of my favourites.

Amazing that there are people who have never heard Weezer before but have ranked all of Muse's albums, not hating at all just...wow. My favorite part of this review was you listening to Buddy Holly for the first time. Been a Weezer fan since blue album dropped in 94. Their music along with Deftones (and many others) was the soundtrack to my existence from 6th-12th grade. Listens to No One Else: "That one had some really messed up lyrics going on" Me: LOL you are not ready for all of Pinkerton. Please keep up the great work in expanding your musical horizons. I still recommend The Pixies, At the Drive In, System of a Down and Coheed & Cambria.

Undone - The Sweater Song is my favorite as well. I love the harmonies in the chorus. I went to the Hella Mega Tour concert (Weezer, Fall Out Boy, and Green Day) in Atlanta, Georgia. We got there around the time Weezer, the first band to perform, was playing. We were about to go in, but they turned us around at security because they wouldn’t allow purses for some odd reason. We had to walk a good distance away to put here bag in a locker and I could hear just slightly in the distance the guitar solo of The Sweater Song and realized we were missing it. I missed my favorite Weezer song because of my mom’s, not even that big, purse. I still get annoyed by it to this day even though it has been many months. Weezer finished their concert with a band with Say It Ain’t So and Buddy Holly which was great. Green Day though… They were the best man. That concert was great.

"No One Else" is about a bad girlfriend and listing off the traits he'd rather have in a girlfriend. "My girl's got a big mouth With which she blabbers a lot" Talks about stuff he'd prefer be kept private and/or misleads and lies to people "She laughs at most everything Whether it's funny or not" Laughing at other guy's jokes (in the flirtatious sense) The chorus also tells us more on the current girlfriend by listing what traits he'd prefer: "...laugh for no one else" - current girlfriend is flirting with others "When I'm away... ...puts her makeup on the shelf" - current girlfriend is wearing it to impress other guys "...never leaves the house" - current girlfriend is hanging out with other guys In the next verse we get the following lines: "My girl's got eyeballs In the back of her head She looks around and around" His current girlfriend is always keeping a close eye on him, possibly because she thinks he is cheating. Someone who themself is cheating often does this, often to try and justify their own cheating. The lyrics have not aged well when it comes to modern standards, and because of new standards we should strive to understand what was meant when it was originally written. Apologies for the long-winded (and probably poorly written) comment, I got distracted while typing this.

@@mollyesanborn While I get that the context of those lyrics might have been different when it was released, this is still the song i always skip when listening to this album. It makes Rivers sound like a total douche to me. Being possessive of another person just feels kinda wrong, and listening to this song in its "straight forward" and unironical way makes me feel really uncomfortable. There are moments like this on Pinkerton (i.e. "Across the Sea") as well, but that album feels more like a personal, confessional album where he acknowledges many problematic sides of his mind. I don't get this feeling here, but maybe that's just me. Anyway, thanks for your thoughts "The History Guy" and thanks for the video, Molly. I really enjoyed it. :)

Wasn't the song made to be a "douchebag's anthem of being overly controlling of his girlfriend" to serve as a setup for the next song (The World Has Turned And Left Me Here) where said douchebag gets left by the girlfriend and he wonders where he went wrong, cause he was so oblivious to his own dickotry? (Though I guess that could just be a Rivers Retcon)

Rivers, Weezer's main singer and lyricist on this album has said that track 2 (No One Else) and 3 (The World Has Turned) are connected, sort of like the world leaving him because of the messed up stuff in No One Else. isolating and borderline abusing a girl, and then she leaves the character and he feels as if the entire worlds against him. I'm fairly certain the song isn't autobiographical, but it's an interesting enough story.
