This album was released after the death of their drummer "The Rev". You can hear and feel anger and loss in the lyrics and music. They had to get in another drummer to record the drum parts. Fiction was the last song "The Rev" wrote before his passing. Such an amazing musician.

Thanks for the clarification! I didn't realize that The Rev passed away before the release of Nightmare. So sad, but Mike Portnoy did a fantastic job filling in for him. The drums are incredible across this whole record.

One of those albums that helped motivate me after my divorce in 2011. I had heard this album prior to that event but after the smoke cleared, well, you're left with time to think. Yes, that's as unsettling as it sounds but anyhow; Mike Portnoy recorded drums for this record as a reverse-tribute for the band as Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan died before this album came out. Gone too soon. "Victim" really hits home for me as it reminds me of my cousin who died in a car crash in 2004. We would have been the same age had he lived. So obviously, I don't write happy lyrics. This album reminds me of Metallica's "And Justice for All" in a way; how a band could pack it up, call it a day after losing a member and there wouldn't be any shame in it. But both bands chose instead to unleash the beast and let those emotions out in full force and I find that fucking awesome.

Thanks for sharing how personal this album is to you, they really pulled out all the stops on Nightmare and I think Mike did a commendable job filling in for The Rev after his passing. Really incredible how they managed to put out an album this good right after such a tragedy.

Pretty good album. Self Titled is probably my favorite from them but Nightmare is also pretty good. Trivium is a band I’d recommend if you like these guys. Shogun is the album to check out from them.

My favorite Avenged album! I enjoy your reactions, you really love and enjoy music. You could get into Soulfly's discography, It's a mixture of Nu Metal, Metal and Brazilian tribal music. "3" is my favorite album of them

Fiction is my favorite song on this album, it was written by the drummer, The Rev, right before he passed away.

Love that song! I wasn't aware that The Rev wrote it, that makes it all the more emotional considering his passing before the release of this album.

Hi Molly, great review as usual. I was thinking what if you check out another of my favorites from 90's "Garbage" Albums like Garbage, Versión 2.0, Beautiful Garbage, Bleed like me could possibly become into your favorites 🤘

Dunno if anyone mentioned this, but the "So Far Away" video is worth checking out. It's the band's goodbye to The Rev, essentially.

all the albums u have left to check out are drastically different from each other but i would suggest to check them out in this order: 1-waking the fallen 2-the stage 3-life is but a dream the other three left: Sounding The Seventh Trumpet Diamonds In The Rough Hail To The King are considered less important from fans so it's up to you to choose if u wanna react to them or not

Yeah no, there is no way you should leave Hail to the King out, probably the album with the best overall production. I believe is one of their best selling albums as well. Gatekeepers and metal elitists are the only ones who hate Hail to the king. That album is awesome (not their best or worst IMO) and very popular as well
