As a native speaker I can tell you, the lyrics are incredible. Such good play on words and there are always different layers of meaning here. For example, the last Track NEBEL means fog, but the lyrics are about a loved person passing away and NEBEL backwarts is LEBEN, which means life. Also, the lead singer is an author of various poetry books. Though, the lyrics are often very controversial. Maybe, for the next reaction, you can consider reading the translated lyrics :)

I don't think I have ever seen someone get introduced to and react to Rammstein in this way, but I love it! This is a quite a good album to start with, but you are sadly missing greatly out on not knowing the lyrics. Rammstein's singer and writer Till Lindemann is a great poet, and the songs often contain a story or a deep meaning, and often not hiding away from controversial topics... I really hope you continue the Rammstein journey, be it with more albums, music videos or live shows ( Rammstein are VERY known for their live shows lol). They do have their own keyboardist/synthesizer who adds all those effects, like the angelic voice in Sonne. These are the song topics in this album 1. Mein Herz Brennt: Children nightmares and "Der Sandmann". 2. Links 2 3 4: A song they wrote stating how their heart beats left, as a response to everyone calling them nazis. 3. Sonne: Written as a boxing entrance to an ukrainian boxer back in 2001 called Vitali Klitschko ( Now mayor of Kyiv, Ukraine) 4. Ich Will: Not a deep song, considered as simply a crowd interaction song, but deeper can be about wanting to be heard and seen, or misunderstood. 5. Feuer Frei: Not a deep song at all, just "Fire at will" about releasing anger 6. Mutter: About a person who never had a mother, as he was born in an incubator as an experiment. Also about the singer and guitarists struggle with their mothers in real life. 7. Spieluhr: About a child who wanted to be alone, so she faked her death, and got buried alive. 8. Zwitter: About a hermaphrodite, that tackles narcissism and bisexuality. 9. Rein Raus: well uh its about s*x. The title is simply "In Out"... The singer Till Lindemann really loves S*x... 10. Zwitter: A person dying of an overdose 11. Nebel: A song about a couple sharing their final moments together, with a walk on the beach and a final kiss, before the woman dies.

Mutter was the first album I had as a child and it was what made me the music lover I am today (my mom gave it to me for Christmas so it was especially symbolic). A couple pronunciation tips. The "ei" sound is like "eye" as opposed to "ee". Think "Einstein". The "W" is more a "V" sound. And if I remember right, if a word ends with an "e", for example Sonne, it is said like "uh". And with the "S" being a "Z" sound in this case, the word Sonne would be more like Zo-n-nuh. Its been a while since I studied German, but I'm fairly certain this is correct. All that being said, I love these full album reactions. I have yet to hear a Rammstein song, let alone album, I didn't like. They are an amazing band, and definitely worth exploring further.

Rein, raus...basically means in, out...so its a song about sex. They often use more complex metaphors or innuendos for some sort of sexual intercourse (not shying away from very dark themes like abuse), but they are pretty straight forward in this one. Sonne translates to sun. This song was written for a boxer (initially called sieger, which means winner or victor) as his entrance music but Klitschko thought it was too hard, so they rearranged the lyrics a bit and made it about the sun. Thats also the reason why they use so much counting in the song. Ich will (I want) is basically a song where they criticise the view german media has on them, praising them one hand and giving them prizes but at the same time bad mouthing them for their controversial things/themes (becoming a bit clearer if you watch the music video). Its a song that, like you picked up, where they ask the crowd and the crowd answers (can you hear us, can you see us, can you feel us...where the crowd basically answers with yes we can). Mutter means mother, its about a child that was created artificially and yearns for a mother, but cant have one and hates its life and the imaginary mother that he hates for not being there (heavily inspired by Frankenstein). It was also a way to deal with the damaged/tough relationships both the singer (Till) and guitarist (Richard) have/had(?) with their mothers. Like someone suggested, maybe you should read translated lyrics before or after the song. Make sure to get one of the good ones though, there are some spotty one on the net, the good ones even provide some context and explain some double meanings in their lyrics.

What I remember most when first hearing this record was feeling like I finally had evidence they were influenced by a Yugoslavian (not sure what territory they are from but Yugoslavia was a country when I was introduced to them) band, Laibach. The internet still wasn't what it is now so really didn't have a clear answer to what I had been wondering since hearing their earlier records. The opening track, 'Links 2 3 4', and 'Feuer Frei' felt very much in line with Laibach who I had been enjoying at that point since the late 80's. In the late 80's the owner of the record store I shopped at knew I am a Queen fan and introduced me to this song called 'Geburt Einer Nation' which musically was a cover of 'One Vision'. Lyrically though I could tell it wasn't a simple translation into a foreign tongue. This happens often, for those who don't know, for example the 80's classic from Nina, '99 Luftballoons'. Laibach has similar bass vocalist at the forefront but take a much more avant-garde approach to their industrial sound rather than metal. They also parody European military iconography in their image along with military, nationalist, and totalitarian themes lyrically which turns off many. I can see anyone discovering them today not seeing the irony and joke; especially in our current political times compared to the 80's when they emerged trying to show that totalitarian ideas were not gone. Sadly they have been proven right. Sorry to throw in politics but unfortunately hard to ignore when discussing them or even Rammstein where especially Mutter had some questioning the bands politics.

Rammstein are in my top 3 bands of all time. I actually prefer not knowing what the lyrics mean. They have amazing music videos and their live shows have crazy and creative pyrotechnics. The guitars in this band are so damn good, the tone, the clean but cutting quality. This album doesn't have a weak song...it's almost all killer. Sonne, Ich Will, Adios and Speiluhr are my favs.
@Nitro201012 жыл бұрын
Why woudn't you prefer not knowing the lyrics? The lyrics are one of the most important parts of the parts of their music. Check them out, it'll open a whole new dimension to Rammstein when you figure them out.
@themetalpig76132 жыл бұрын
@@Nitro20101 Well when I first started listening to them, the internet wasn't very prolific, so I didn't have access to the lyrics. And I loved them regardless of not understanding German. I've since seen the translation of a few songs and some have rather simplistic, almost silly lyrics that almost put me off those songs that already gave me a certain emotional feeling when I was ignorant to the lyrics...plus I've been burnt in the past where I thought lyrics said one thing, then found out there was a word I wasn't hearing correctly and it spoiled what the song meant for me. eg: Static X - Love Dump, I always thought it said "Happy Alive" but years later found out it was "Hand me a line" and it ruined that songs impact for me. So with Rammstein, I go by the feel/emotion of the lyrics and get so much out of the guitars, drums etc that ignorance is bliss when it comes to knowing what their lyrics are. Altho I do know a few of the more popular songs meanings.
@mollyesanborn2 жыл бұрын
I will definitely have to give their music videos a watch now, some others have mentioned them as well. And yes, those guitars are amazing!! One of the standouts on this album for me as well. And about your point in your other comment about not knowing the lyrics, I can totally relate. Sometimes it's all about the feel for me too. Even songs with English lyrics that I understand I usually don't pay much attention to the words at first, and sometimes after I start to analyze and pick apart the lyrics the song can lose something for me. So I feel you on that point. Although in other cases knowing the lyrics has elevated a song for me too, so I guess it can swing either way.
@themetalpig76132 жыл бұрын
@@mollyesanborn Yeah it can definitely swing both ways for me too. I think particularly with Rammstein, I was already so into them before their lyrics became accessible to me that I didn't want to risk it. It's super nostalgic watching you go through albums I listened to over a decade ago. Makes me feel old though.

I watch a fair bit of react content and your reactions are pretty unique I feel, I've been watching your videos here and there for a while now and it always feels like I'm watching a radio broadcast. There's also something very open about your style, you come across as very unassuming. I love how you can listen to the gnarliest lyrically super fucked up stuff and just be like "I really love how the guitar builds with the energy of the lyrics". This reaction in particular is pretty funny to me, I live in the Netherlands which means German is a very recognizeable language for me. Despite the fact that you clearly have 0 clue what's going on with the lyrics you still pick up on some cool stuff instrumentally, and well, there's just something comedic about someone with a very American accent pronouncing the song titles and the band's name. It reminds me of Brad Pitt in Inglorious Bastards when he greets people in Italian. I'm not entirely sure why I felt the need to write all that out but what I'm trying to say is I think you got something pretty unique going on here and I think that's great. Keep it up!

Haha, I loved reading this comment! Glad you found the reaction entertaining with my very American pronunciations of the German titles. And yeah, I do try and keep a pretty open mind with music. Even if the lyrics are in English it usually does take me several listens to an album to start picking up on most of the lyrics. It was really interesting giving a German band a listen though!

My favorite Rammstein album, and the one that introduced me to their music. I still remember the day I heard it for the first time at a friend's house. We didn't talk until it finished, just exchanging some stank faces now and then. I wish there were a way to listen to it for the first time again. Amazing stuff.

Hey You should try listening to Soen, it's a really good prog-metal band with heavy influences from Tool and Opeth, they got a unique sound but at the sale time You can hear the influences, you'll love them!!

YES, YES, YES! one of the quintessential INDUSTRIAL masterpieces ever, and Molly REACTS to it. WOO! also, when you get around to it, listen to Just one Fix by Ministry ( you'll notice the RIFF, and it's just one fix that used that riff and all other INDUSTRIAL used it since, it's the FOUNDATION riff)

Glad you enjoyed the video! This album was such a great listen, I loved all of the industrial metal elements they used but they fused it with so many other sounds and genres that it made for a really refreshing mix of elements. Can't wait to hear more from Rammstein, and I'll have to check out Ministry too :)

Once took a job as a children's swim instructor and I swear that one of the dads was a dead ringer for Till Lindemann (Rammstein's vocalist). Still not convinced it wasn't him. Needless to say, I haven't really listened to Rammstein and will probably fix that after watching this.

I was kept looking to see if you did this album, I'm glad you did, not the album I would have picked. He does have some English tracks if interested on his solo album and a few through Rammstein. It's pronounced Ram Stein too 😂. You can pick up on some if you listen closer to the diction. Sonne the sun, mutter mother, my heart burns.

Fun fact, depending on what part of Germany you're from the pronunciation of Ich was correct (some places say it like Iek/Ick and some say it Eish/Eesh). You weren't incorrect it's just not how they say it is all. Dialect is key.

I got this album shortly after release when I was in middle school. I wore this album the fuck out, listening to it close to every day for the first year and once a week after for a few years. Still my favorite of theirs and one of my favorite albums of all time. My most memorable time with it was listening to it while laying on my trampoline in the cool air of the fall after my girlfriend and I broke up. Good times.

That angelic singing in Sonne is actually a sample they took from the movie Snow White. You should check out the music video for it some time. It's incredible and plays off as a way darker take on the movie with the band as the dwarfs and Snow White as an abusive heroin addict 😄

One thing you need to know, if you don't react to some of the live videos and music videos, you are legitimately missing 50% of the experience with Rammstein. Rammstein are absolutely incredible in their artistry when it comes to their music, their videos, and also insane live. If I had to recommend one live video, it would have to be Mein Teil. Then if I had to recommend one music video it would have to be Deutschland. Litteraly every live video, and every music video is worth watching. Also worth noting, Til Lindemann is the lead singer, and he has a lot of solo work that absolutely deserves to be heard as well, if I had to pick one video of his, it would have to be "Mein Hertz Brennt" that he re did. His artistry just as a performer is on point in this video, I have shown multiple people this video, and it holds their attention all the way through even when they weren't prepared for what the song was at all. Or how creepy til is in that video

Mutter is my favorite Rammstein album. Its rare when I actually like all the songs on one album.. My favorite song is Rein Raus. Then Links 2 3 4, Sonne, Spieluhr, Zwitter and then the rest of the songs...all of them are awesome!! 😍😍🤘🏻🤘🏻💯💯🔥🔥💕💕

I recommend watching the video clips and the life concerts. They might be the best life performers in the world, no exaggeration. Till, the singer, became a certified pyro technician after an accident on stage early in their career. Now they have the craziest pyro technics you can imagine. Flame throwers mounted on their faces. Flamethrower guitars. Flamethrower everything. Their current life setup is so insane, the city of Munich is argueing to cancel the show. I've seen pictures. A tiny bit more insanity, and it could be seen from space, I guess.

As always you nailed a lot of nails in the head: Rammstein is indeed an industrial metal band, akin to NIN and Static X, they were the main example of what is called Neue Deutsche Härte (it translate as New German Hardness), an industrial metal German movement from the beginning and mid 90's (post reunification, that point is important to have in mind). Many bands from that era, many still playing, that are or were (many changed throughout the years) very similar to Rammstein, although Rammstein wasn't by any means the first one. Rammstein members lived in the east side of Berlin, the communist side, unlike many bands of the Neue Deutsche Härte movement who mostly lived in the west side. That influenced their music in many ways, one of the main ones was precisely the electronic scene from the 80's, which was illegal in the east. After reunification, that electronic scene grew up exponentially and to this day Berlin is known for its raves and discos, but more over, Rammstein is highly influenced by the pop music the, in some cases, barely had access to. Their first album was a total success from early on and the combination of those different circumstances made their sound very unique among comparable bands. By the time Mutter came out they were international sensations, but they had a hard time facing controversies with no basis in reality. They are germans, they are metal, they sing in a baritone register, they are white... a lot of people accused of being nazis or far right wing sympathizers and that pissed them off because in reality, they are very left leaning and they have continuously talked of the east Berlin in very positive terms (Richard Kruspe, main guitarist and founder not at all, he is the only one that lives outside Berlin, and he is politically a bit different). So what happened is that Mutter was a response to that: Links 2, 3, 4 translate as 'Left 2, 3 ,4' and basically is a song to unite and fight the power (it is reflected in the video), Ich Will means 'I demand' and it evokes a dictator demanding obedience and the people responding they wont. Feuer Frei is about... fire, is actually the command that the German military uses to engage and there are both references to war and sex. The album theme is abortion which is still a touchy subject in Germany, and a lot of the lyrics (Sonne, Spielhur, Mutter) are based in folk stories. Mutter is such a great example of imagination and refinement. There is a last component to Rammstein which is how sexual is everything in general, being Mutter one of the album were is not that noticeable given the intention they had with it, but you will see how erotic everything gets. This is one of my favorites album and it is very important part of my teenage year. I managed to see them live previous to the pandemic and I already bought tickets to see them again. It is... an experience. Keep it up!
