SV650 was the first "big" bike that I owned after my 200cc. It's been more than 6 years now but I still remember the day that I picked it up from the dealership and rode it home. It was literally a quantum leap from my 200cc, 20 hp bike. The torque... Oh, the torque of the V-Twin.. I thought I'd be intimidated by it but it took me only 2 hours to get used to it. When it comes to SV650, I can talk for hours and it will only be the good things. I have owned many bikes and I can confidently say SV650 is the definition of motorcycle in my book. One does not need any "more" bike than this; well, yes, we always need bigger and better bikes but after owning several bikes with more hp and displacement than SV650, that's the conclusion that I came to. If you ever decide to buy one, I can assure you that it will put huge smiles on your face every single time you twist that throttle!

I definitely appreciated the power of the bike. It handled nicely in general, turning oddity aside. This is the general cc zone I’d like to land in with whatever I buy next.

Just agreeing with everything you just said. You'll never need any more power or torque than the SV has. More of either can still be fun, but there's plenty there to do anything that a remotely responsible rider will ever want to do.

You did just fine. Hope that gave you the confidence you were looking for. The key to faster bikes is finesse. Throttle, brakes, clutch and to some extent leaning over. Being able to smoothly make tiny adjustments even in panic situations. Once you have that you can ride pretty much any bike.

Great video. I used to own a 1999 Suzuki GZ250. I now own a 2024 Suzuki SV650 and love it!!! You are right when describing its power; it's not a beginner bike and is easy to handle. Yet the bike does have "manageable" power greater than a lesser CC machine. The SV650 is really more bike than most people will reasonably need.

In my garage is a 2015 H-D Ultra Limited (1750 cc twin cam), a 2017 Road Glide Special (1750 cc M8), and a 2014 Honda Rebel (250 cc CMX250c) Each bike offers something the others don’t. So yes it’s fair to make comparisons. I love riding each bike for its own reasons. Enjoy the bike you have, and enjoy riding and learning other bikes as well. Great video.

Good to see you trying a bigger bike, and glad you didn't give up last year when the wind made you drift. The heavier the bike the less the wind will push you around. I been trying different bikes to see what I want to get next. Enjoy the weather down there. It's freezing up north in Central PA.

Gina, if there's a good bike dealer in your neighborhood go talk to them, see what they have in the 500-750 range used that you can test ride. Try cruiser style bikes, adv bikes, retro style bikes, sportbikes. Try them all (if the let you) just to build some confidence. It might also be less stressful that jumping straight in to do demo days where it's mostly group rides around a predetermined loop where you try both street, country roads and highway.

That looked like a good time. Ya know I was off a bike for 18 years and when my better half past away I had to do something to get out of this house, so I bought a Honda 750 Shadow, kept it for 3 weeks and bought a Harley Soft tail, kept it for 3 months and bought my Electra Glide. Every step up was nerves and excitement. You did well.

Good for you, Gina! Its a great feeling to overcome your hesitancies and broaden your horizons, isn't it? I felt exactly the same way when I decided to move up from the 1988 Honda Shadow that I rebuilt to my 2020 Goldwing. I was nervous as heck when I went for my first test drive! You're doing this exactly the right way by starting out small and working your way up (if that's what you decide to do). The best thing about moving up to a bigger bike is that it's nice to have the extra power in reserve if you ever need it to get out of a dangerous situation...I can tell you that from experience! Enjoy your riding. (Temps are in single digits here in CT and we're facing a blizzard this weekend!)

Hi Gina. I have a Yamaha FZ1 and Suzuki SV650S. That's essentially the faired version of the bike you were riding which even felt weird to me the first few times I rode it. Where a motorbike differs from a car is in how it feels and you need to do a few hundred miles before that initial weirdness disappears, then you wonder what all the fuss was about. Great video and you rode it well.

Congrats on the new experience! Good bike to try out, haven't ridden one myself but have heard mostly good things about the SV (mostly the earlier models), biggest gripe was soft suspension (which is why there's an aftermarket). Everyone's motorcycle journey is unique. Build experience and confidence. I went from a 125 to a 500, and it was over 20 years before I moved up from that, and the next bike (Daytona 955) scared me a few times early on as things happened so much faster than I was used to (nearly the same overall size and weight, more than twice the power). I've since had the opportunity to ride a Ducati Diavel (an absolute hoot to ride), Scrambler 1100, Monster 1200S, Harley FXS-DR, the absolutely otherworldly Ducati Panigale V4S, and a BMW S1000RR on a track (CA Superbike School, highly recommend that experience). Most of those have been within the last 10 years and I've been riding for almost 50 now. Keep learning!

There are other bikes out there in the 650 class that equally robust but there are a couple that will scare the pants of of you so steer clear of those. Each bike is a stepping stone to something either faster or better or both. Yeah, good timing for this video, Im off tomorrow to look at a v-Star650 I want to buy. Here in NZ a 650cc bike is the largest capacity allowed on our LAMS system. While I'm still on a learners permit, right now Im sitting my restricted test later in February. If I pass, the same restrictions apply, but I get to take off the L plate. I'll probably do that test on my 250cc bike if I haven't sold it by then, but only because that's the one I have the most experience on. 8) If I do sell it, Ill have to get LOTS of practice in on the 650. Oh noooooo 8)

Good for you Gina, I've been watching your videos for a little while now (not a complete stalker 🤣) and can see how you've gotten increasingly confident on a bike and I genuinely know what you mean about anxiety as well. I did things a little differently and having never riden before went and did my motorcycle test in U.K. and went straight for the "Direct Access Course" which, if you are over a certain age can take lessons and do your test on a large CC bike (upto 650cc). I learnt to ride on an SV650, passing my test two weeks after I started the course. I then went out and bought a 2021 MT09 and have been getting to grips with it ever since. I am a year down the road now and my confidence levels are growing day by day. I find myself yearning for an upgrade to an MT10 but am going to hold off for a little while longer to gain more experience and trust in my abilities. I think you are doing the right thing by getting it and test riding bikes to get an idea of what suits your riding style, your size, height the position you are in on the bike. There are so many variables it's good to experience these first before making a desicion on what bike you want to get next 😉 Keep getting out there and I look forward to seeing more of your videos of how you get on 👍🏻 Ride safe 🙏 Damo

What a great video! It was fun to watch and listen to your experience riding a "new" motorcycle. Your hesitation to try a different (bigger) motorcycle is completely understandable. The skills you have learned on your bike directly translate to every other bike. Yes, they are all different and learning a different bike takes time to be comfortable when you ride it. But then that's the enjoyment of being out and about on 2 wheels. You get to have new experiences that you wouldn't have in car. 😁 Thank you for sharing your experience, I enjoyed watching. You've had some fairly cold weather down there this winter. I chatted with a friend in Zephyrhills and he was saying your lows are headed into the 20s this weekend. We've got 12 to 18 inches of snow coming here to Maine on Saturday. I bet you miss that, don't you. LOL. That was an interesting video and it's good to push yourself out of your comfort zone. I'd rather ride a dealers bike than a friends. If you put a scratch on it, you'd feel like crap and would have to have it fixed but a dealer is insured for others riding their bikes. I just hate to use other peoples stuff. Quite often when I do, it comes back and bites me in the butt. Stay safe and God Bless.

Hi Ginger, that was great that you were able to ride another bike with more CCs. The power is one thing but the weight is something else. When I first started riding it was a Yamaha xs650 427 lbs, fast forward 30 years and I bought a Harley Vrod weighing 650lbs. After not riding for that length of time, not riding a bike of any kind I was timid. I rode around the neighborhood and it all came back very quick. Other than getting it off of the kickstand once the bike was moving it felt so familiar to riding that Yamaha. There is always a different feeling for each bike. You know how to ride just go out and do the thing as another KZbinr says. Stay safe out there.

Amanda gives good advice! Thankfully, my bike and this bike weigh nearly the same. But it’s true that the “knowing” that comes with riding in general will translate from bike to bike. I believed that would be the case, but I needed to test it out for my own peace of mind. 😊

Gina, it would have been fun to see your facial expressions in the first few minutes of riding the SV. I learned to ride on a 500, bought a 650 as my first bike, eventually traded up to an 800 and own a 600 Super Sport as well. The 250-400cc class is designed for a few key segments, namely city commuting and first time riders. Most people not doing urban commuting outgrow that class as their riding skills and overall confidence improves. The bigger displacement bikes offer two key features missing on a lower-displacement bike: more torque and better suspensions. You got to experience both of those almost immediately. Glad you made the leap!

I just picked up a new bike last night and have spent the day rattling off the differences from my previous bike. My wife and friends listened patiently, but I’m pretty sure the lady in the checkout lane in Publix was looking for the nearest exit. What was it that attracted you to a bike with such a committed riding position as your first bike? Please don’t misunderstand, I applaud your choice, but it’s definitely not for everyone.

Hey there! Congrats on the new bike, and my sympathies to the poor lady at Publix. My bike isn’t as upright as a naked bike, but much more upright than a larger (think more supersport) model. I enjoyed your ride and your thoughts. I give you kudos. I know I can do a test ride on a bike; it's how I traded my first bike for the one I have now. BUT I think I'd be incredibly nervous about riding a bike that actually BELONGS to someone. (I hope that makes sense, or maybe I'm just thinking about it strangely lol). I had lots of similar conversations in my mind as I rode the bike I have now.. and I think my husband may have gotten a bit tired of hearing me make comparisons after each ride at the beginning. I actually found that I was MORE comfortable on my softail slim (the current bike) than I had been on my Dyna. It has everything to do with bow the bike is balanced and the fact that I sit "in" the softail rather than feeling like I was perched ON the Dyna. Both are great bikes, but I definitely made the right choice for me when I made the change. I understand your excitement; and I'm glad you enjoyed your ride.

Hi Gina ... being apprehensive is quite normal. What can cause problems, on any size bike, is riding the same old route. Where a different route you are more alert to changing road conditions, traffic, corners of different radius, different dogs and so one. The 650 has different fork geometry, different tires can "drop" into a corner, suspension set up can also affect "flick-ability". A lowered bike has different geometry and handling that the same bike stock. Always make sure you can pick-up a dropped bike ... 100 pounds extra can make a massive difference without the proper technique and practice. Also review maintenance costs on a prospective purchase as removing a lot of body work just to change spark plugs, air cleaner can add a bunch of $$ to the bill. As an example. This was an unexpected upload and I enjoyed your observations. Take care, stay safe and well, God bless you always.

Good for you, Gina! The motorcycle doesn't care about your size, just give it smooth inputs, pay attention - expect and accept a different feel. Heck, in motion, you have an advantage - less mass - to move on two little squishy bits of rubber. At 6'4" and 220, I've got a lot more weight to contend with in a corner. Speaking of squishy bits of rubber, be sure to always check your tire pressure with a good gauge, front & rear. You'd be surprised at how different (and occasionally sketchy) things feel at different tire pressures. That SV650 gives off an old 70s Ducati vibe with the trellis frame. The reason it feels more flickable is all to do with the chassis geometry. Have you ever seen an old chopper with the front wheel W-a-a-a-y out front? A chopper has a lot of rake angle in the steering stem. With a sport bike, the angle is much closer to vertical. A tighter rake angle, like 25 degrees or so, gives you sportbike handling, but it will feel twitchy with less straight line stability and self-centering if you are coming from a cruiser or touring bike. Steeper rake angle means more stability, but less "flickable" - it takes more effort to toss it into a corner or transition through a series of fast bends. Touring bikes come in around 29- 30 degrees, cruisers a little higher. So there's this spectrum - twitchy and flickable at one end and steady and stable at the other, always a trade off. Most bikes are friendly ( except early 70s 750cc Kawasaki two stroke triples - they actively try to kill you - fortunately I was young and invincible at the time) and want you to ride them, accept that they will feel different from the last one, and listen to (& feel) what they are telling you. Namaste...stay sticky side down. Thanks for the delightful content.

When I started riding 4.5 years ago, I too purchased a 250cc motorcycle. I choose a Suzuki GW250 second hand from a dealership for $3500NZ, which was half the price of the equivalent new bike. I rode this for 26 months before progressing to a Vstrom 650xt. I like the extra size the Vstrom gives me but with a max speed limit of 100kmph and if you are caught doing 140kmph it is an instant loss of licence the increased engine size is more about how comfortable the engine is sitting at the speed limit. Both Suzukis have been problem free machines and a pleasure to own and ride.

Miss Gina my friend, you are not alone. If everyone out there and in here is honest with themselves and each other, we all have a new/different bike jitter. For many it's can I handle. For quite a few it's; "can i and my insurance afford if I put this down". As you know I am pigheaded. I only ride what I am considering to purchase or test rides after replacing parts do not count! I am checking my work not the bike for the long term. We are all newbies if we get onto something we've no experience on. Understanding someone's changes or modifications only works if we had previous knowledge!!! When I ride my daughter's Low Rider, it's only after some work I've done. Lowering that bike took out a little suspension travel and for me, limited handling! Adding HPs is minimal so for me "no change" For my princess (Mom of two boys) it's noticeable. For you my friend, ride whatever you get the chance to, however often you can and enjoy each experience. Do not limit your motorcycle experience to one brand or style. You beautiful Lady are certainly not a single flavor! In these rides enjoy that tingling of fear. A little fear of the unknown is exhilarating and healthy to explore. Nice to see you back on a bike. I have never ridden either of these bikes but most reviews I've heard of the gsx250r mention that is has relatively slow steering. They usually say it's the weight or the longish wheelbase. But the sv650 is longer and heavier. Personally I think it's a combination of handle bar width and frame design. And the sv650 is probably closer to avg when it comes to flickability. The gsx250r has slow steering, which is better suited for cruising.

All tires have unique profiles. Some are more triangle shaped and will fall into a turn. Others are more rounded or have a larger radius and they will not want to let the bike lean as easy. There is also rake and trail on the front forks. Less rake makes it turn quicker less trail will do the same.

One thing you will def experience riding other bikes is more confidence riding. The engineering on larger displacement bikes is that the ride is more you and the bike together as opposed to a very small bike. Always keep giving other bikes a try is absolutely right in gaining more confidence. 👍

I believe that true as well, which is why I’d like to try out multiple bike options before buying my next one.

So glad you finally overcame your initial trepidation about not only riding someone else’s bike, but also a bigger bike. We both knew you’d have no problems at all once you took that initial step. And now we both also know what comes next. 😄😉

Yeah, yeah B. I’m not quite ready to pull the trigger on a new bike. But I’ll keep my options open at least. 😉

Good to see another video, I've been wondering for some time now what your next bike will be. My GF is on a 2000 Honda Shadow Aero 1100. I hope she'll move on to a fuel injected bike like a Yamaha 1300 V-Twin...something with decent sized saddlebags and sissybar and luggage rack. I'm on a 2006 Yamaha Stratoliner 1900. Anyhow, good to see you are still putting out new video's!

Thanks, Daniel! It sounds like you’ve got a good list going there. Maybe this is the year your GF swaps bikes. 😊

Yes, try different styles of riding. The steering geometry is a little different between the 2 which will make it steer different. Tires do also make a difference, my victory vision had always had Dunlop tires then I switched over to Avon tires and experienced the same effect of the bike turning itself through corners. Keep enjoying what you are doing…we are.

Thanks, Russell! Even this short ride has left me better prepared for trying new motorcycles. Hopefully, I’ll get a chance to try out various models before purchasing another one.

Great video Gina. I ride a Harley TriGlide and as a result, my skill set on two wheels has suffered some atrophy. Thus, I have also felt the trepidation you referred to about test rides. I intend to take the “Harley-Davidson Riding Academy” course this year to polish those skills I feel have suffered. It is all about getting out of the comfort zone! 👍

That’s great, Bill! Getting back in the two-wheeled game - so to speak - is a good step.

You go girl the feeling in the steering maybe something to do with if it has a steering damper/stabilizer

Happy for you that you tried! Always good to try out other bikes. That way you can keep learning and meanwhile also get more confidence in your own riding. Also in my opnion/point of view in the US it's wise to start on a smaller bike since we in Europe/The Netherlands have a 3 level/parts of licenses for a bike depending on age and experience. Unless you are responsible and have former riding experience you can (more) safely start on a bigger cc bike. Also I think having more cc's/power/torque/most comfortable for you riding position make you ride safer and make yourself safer due to being less restricted on something.

I also think the US is far too lax when it comes to motorcycle licensing. Learning over a weekend and then jumping on an R1 is just stupid - but people do it. I bought my 250 purely due to cost factors. I am too careful a rider to have lost my head on something bigger. But I am ready for something different. When? Not sure. Soon…maybe. :)

As you ride your own ride, pick whenever you are ready. Take test rides when you are willing. Curious to the next video and the proces you are going through.

The fork angle is different on the 650. That's why it's more "flickable"

Makes perfect sense, George. I wondered about that at the time, but didn’t want to sound like an idiot suggesting that could be the reason.

I recommended the SV to you a while back. I love these so much I've just bought another! You say the bike was lowered? It may be why the steering felt quick because these are near perfect on standard setup. I'm looking forward to the return of the nice weather to the UK next year.
