Recently I have been on a mission to see if there is a better landscape photography camera out there for me and this week I have a Fujifilm GFX 50R medium format camera. I meet up with BVS & Jodie and head to Dunstanburgh to capture some seascapes during a cold winter sunset.

You set the nearest shutter speed on the top dial and then use the back thumb dial for the more precise adjustment to speeds that aren't listed on the top dial. Also, it has BUILT IN focus bracketing. If you actually learn about the camera you'll get so much more out of it.

I am SO TIRED of KZbinrs uploading a "first impressions!!!!!" video, only to realize the KZbinr knows almost NOTHING about the camera. Any of us could take this camera out of the box and fiddle around with it for a day, mate, you aren't SHOWING us anything. This has no VALUE.

Many fuji fan girls say fuji has the best ergos and are easy to use, yet we can see that is quite the lie. The grip is terrible, it's like holding a huge solid brick with no good grip. Lack of d-pad. Dumb dials that only please nostalgic old school film camera users. Lenses are huge for the body. If you have to read the manual to go out and simply take manual settings of slow paced photography then it isn't well designed nor intuitive.

@@junjunt119 Like using a goddamned Sony or Canon R are intuitive? Don't make me laugh. Using any professional grade tool without reading the manual once is a fool's game. And yes, Fuji does a fantastic job exposing most of the critical controls on physical dials, vs having to menu dive on other modern brands. I've shot Oly, Canon, Fuji, and Sony, and Fuji are by far and away the most fun and intuitive to shoot on.

Thank you Len. I really like Thomas' channel but this series of "how to bumble through enormously expensive cameras!" is already grating on me. Learn the camera, THEN use it. Learn at least simple stuff like how to set SS and what base ISO is and how to focus. Sheesh.
@junjunt119

@@scotttucker9613 Yes a Sony or EOSR are easier to use MANUAL MODE without reading a damn manual if you're an experienced photographer. If an experienced photographer like Thomas cannot figure out how to set his shutter speed on the Fuji than that speaks volume of its design for BASIC functions. The whole switch to T dial or going the closest speed you want than using the rear dial thing is stupid and unintuitive unless you come from or long for a film like camera. This is the 21st century, a digital camera, it doesn't need to be complex for the sake of nostalgia.

Thomas...! Please. I think very few here would have a problem with you skipping an upload once in a while. Please take your time. Everything in the last month or so was like "I just took it and went out" or "I just stood up and turned on the camera to film this and I don't know what I am talking about". With lots of viewers comes great responsibility, expecially when it comes down to gear. Even if you are saying that everybody should try bevore buying something, you have to know that there are a lot of people who will actually buy what you use! And I can't watch any more unprepared high-end-camera-testing videos of you. 1. RTFM! - 2. Try it for yourself! - 3. Make a video. Not the other way around... Sorry. Love you.

A lot of upset people here on the fact that it wasn't so intuitive to adjust the exposure, but i usually do a search on google on spot if i forget where are my menus on sony. The other problem with focus i'm sure is not written in the manual. I agree with you though that skipping videos for a proper one will not bother many.

Agreed, unfortunately despite saying 'this is not a review' Thomas has ventured into gear comparison territory, which can only result in dividing his subscribers. Those who have the camera he chooses, and all those who have brought 'the wrong make'. Shame, he should have played it down and concentrated on his amazing photography.

I believe that you could have taken the manual with you or looked up on the internet in less than 3 minutes how to focus stack or control your shutter speed. Makes me feel you and some other tubers out there are getting a bit arrogant. +300k subscribers minus 1 still makes good money I guess. Don’t take me wrong, I deeply respect your work, but I am getting tired of it, as I don’t really get any added value out of it. ( yes I know that honesty never pays off) Wishing you all the best!

Maybe you actually don't want to switch!! I am not saying it's deliberate but I wouldn't be surprised if you ended up keeping using your current Canon camera. Very disappointing. I am a great admirer of Thomas and guess I have to allow him the occasional dud vlog. I just felt it bordered on insulting to Fuji to take the camera out of the box and head straight out to shoot a minorly challenging location and wanting to focus stack. He did not seem to take advantage of focus peaking, did not know how to set shutter speed using T setting, and did not know about focus bracketing which I believe the camera can do, but will retract if I am wrong. He also threw doubt on the sharpness of the lens. I am a Canon 1DS3 user (but less and less) having moved to the Fuji X System, now with 3 Fuji X cameras, and a suite of lenses, and the lenses are all superb. I have little doubt that when Thomas gets his head around the camera and it’s simplicity of use that he will recognise it as an incredibly capable piece of kit. I wish Santa had loaned me a GFX for Chrissie!

How could going to such a stunning and iconic photography location at sunset on a beautiful evening with a new camera and great company possibly feel like a waste of time? Give the lad a break ffs. We have all gone on a first shoot with a new camera and wether or not we've spent hours studying the manual there is always something we get stuck on. The only difference is WE don't have the pressure of being filmed getting stuck. Tom doesn't and never has pretended to be perfect which is one reason people enjoy his honest and humble vlogs.

To be honest, many similar channels are going downhill at the moment. Maybe theres is just little to say? The landscape photographer's vlog starter pack now is: some accent, preferably a dog running around, lots of comments how is the weather and how it "couldn't be any better", or. how it is rainy and foggy. Something about composition and something about the light, bonus lightroom edit. Fin.

From a full frame DSLR to a medium format mirrorless camera from a different brand with completely different controls and ideas of usability, that‘s a big difference for usage. You definitely should have looked into the system a little bit before taking it out. It was the same thing for me when I used a Nikon DSLR in school, it was super weird and I couldn’t figure out a lot of things coming from my Fujifilm X-T20. It‘s also like switching between Mac and Windows or iOS and Android. No matter how good those systems are, if you never used one of them, you‘re going to be confused for sure. The shutter speed on Fujifilm cameras is really straight forward. The shutter speed dial shows full stops and you can always fine tune it with the back dial from there. For more than 1 second you set it to T and use the back dial from there. At least that‘s how it works on my X-T20 and I‘m sure the medium format is not different as long as you didn‘t customize the back dial for something different.

I honestly can't seem to find a comment that doesn't complain about your use of the camera. I personally found great enjoyment in this video. It always relaxes me watching you. What people seem to be forgetting about this whole "mission to see if there is a better camera" is that this is solely for Thomas. These aren't review videos, you can find those elsewhere. What Thomas is trying to do is treat these cameras the same way he would his bread and butter 5DIV. For him this is a fair comparison to see which one feels the best, and produces the images that HE feels are the best. If he has to faff about with the settings and it feels uncomfortable to him, then that's a con to the camera. For HIM. Perhaps not to someone else, but from what I've gathered it seems like he doesn't want this camera change to affect his workflow. I could be wrong, that's just my observation. Thanks for another one of my relaxing mornings Thomas. Cheers!

I look forward to your next video on the Fuji after a little more time getting comfortable with it. Like any new camera it takes time to get the best out of it. I don't think there was any harm in going out and having a play without knowing the 50R intimately. Even if you'd read the manual first you'd have likely forgotten most of what you'd read by the time you went out to shoot anyway. Sometimes just getting out there and going hands on can be the best way of learning - it certainly makes for a useful first impressions video anyway! Don't worry about all the cranky fan boys and girls getting all in a tizz. You're gonna get that on the web no matter what you do. I'm a Fuji shooter myself and really love the system I'm in and I'm confident you'll enjoy it too once you get to know it. Having said that, I don't know why anyone expects you to know a new system backwards after using Canon for your entire professional career. It's often useful to take on the feedback of your viewers and perhaps slowing down your output is a valid suggestion, but at the same time remember that YOU made this channel successful. Do things how you want. I know I'll keep watching. You're my favourite KZbinr.

Thanks Thomas! as a Northerner myself (born and raised in Cheshire) I love watching these videos and hearing that friendly, familiar accent (since I now live in Tennessee). Are you going to try out a Hasselblad X1D? A friend of mine has one for landscapes and swears by it.

God damn, I am so unreasonably excited when there is a new Thomas Heaton video, I feel 25 again hahah. I am on my fourth Fujifilm camera and the downside is that I am barely able to use cameras for humans, Fujifilm does everything do differently. It really works after a couple of weeks but first days are still a bit of a pain.

Infinity... Old lenses used to have a hard stop, and DoF scale. What do you do if you subject does not gave enough contrast for AF to work? Point to something that has enough contrast (e.g. the tower to the right on horizon). And a couple f-stops down from full opening give DoF.

Love your transparency in the shoot report Thomas. A little more editing coud be better-but, personally, I would rather be the one to fast-forward, than not know what I might have missed if you had cut it on your end. Your posts feel very honest and authentic... the highest compliment I know how to convey. Thank you !! /dj

Hello Thomas, you can use the T Mode as Justin meant. There you will find a range between 1“ to 15 minutes (like the other Fuji cameras). So help that helps. Klaus

Hi Thomas, I'm really interested in hearing some further thoughts from you about all aspects of the GFX. Any chance of a follow up video? I'm currently in the same boat as you - long time Canon user, seriously looking at options in the market. Your thoughts and opinions would be very much appreciated.

This was disappointing. I feel like I didn’t learn anything new. Hopefully you’ll have it figured out for next time. There is a T setting on the SS dial usually that lets you set SS with the rear dial, so you can choose long exposure options.

To set your shutter speed manually you’ll switch the dial to “T” then go to your menu and set it there.

@@momchilyordanov8190 no. I'm an X series guy but I've got to reason to disbelieve that the medium format stuff is any different. On the XT2 the shutter speed dial has intervals at every stop from 1/8000sec to 1sec, then T for timed which runs off the thumb dial all the way up to 15 minutes, B for bulb and A for auto which exposes automatically but can be further manipulated by the exposure compensation dial. It's all very intuitive once you are used to it.
