I requested it years ago when you first reacted to Will Ramos's vocals, but I'm sure it got lost in the shuffle. It'll probably be lost again, but Oliver Ray Aleron from Archspire does deserve your attention. He mixes death metal vocal styles with speed rapping for ridiculously fast, yet clearly enunciated delivery and his breath control is downright insane. He'd probably also be up to having a camera down his throat, too! Oli also does some other techniques you haven't looked into yet, like inhale vocals. Archspire toured with Whitechapel a year or two ago across the US as well, so if you've already talked to Phil you can easily get in contact with Oliver through him!

Another thing I love about Whitechapel is Phil writes from his own experience. Which wasn't easy. He lost his father at an early age, his mother suffered from mental illness and addiction (ending in a fatal overdose), and his stepfather was abusive. All this transferred to Phil to some degree as an adult, but he overcame it. Hence his battling his demon here and in Without You/Without Us. He shares this to help others and returns the devotion of their fans fully. Every year on Halloween the band does a hometown show, just to give back.

When Elizabeth was talking about "...turning vulnerabilities into strengths..." it reminded me of one of the things that I think is the appeal of aggressive music: catharsis. It's also there in punk and hardcore, or even any music (or media, like a good horror movie) that delves into darker themes, but it's kind of baked into metal, especially certain subgenres. I'm not a psychologist, so take it with a grain of salt, but I think there's something about it that's not unlike Jung's idea of "Shadow Work", that metal in particular is great for allowing us to safely confront our inner demons, help us to get a handle on them, and thus achieve that feeling of catharsis. I do know there have been studies that would seem to suggest I'm on the right track, at least!

Its not really surprising that folksy sound finds it way into their music. The band is from Knoxville TN, pretty much the epicenter of bluegrass. So Phil and the guys are just incorporating their heritage. One thing that impresses me about Phil is the degree of enunciation he gets with an extreme level of harshness. Phil may not have the range of techniques that some artists do, but what he does, he does with equisite perfection.( also hes a great traditional vocalist). Absolutely one of my favorite artists. I'm so excited you got Phil and Travis for this project!

I clicked on this video the instant I saw it as this is one of the songs I use for my vocal sessions and I was curious to hear your thoughts. You're absolutely correct about enunciating while doing harsh vocals as well.
