My mom pass 4 years ago. 😢She did not speak English until 1st Grade. I asked her how she learned English and she said “I taught myself” She was the only child of 8 who went to High School. She was 3rd Generation German Immigrant. Our town was nicknamed “The Krauts” because it was 💯 German Catholic and feisty as hell. The excitement was coming to our town to pick a fight on Friday nights. Many got sent back home with a swift kick.
