He should have called CPS on day 1. If anyone recognized that kid when he was out, if the kid got hurt or if there was any kind of emergency he would have been doomed.

Agreed. OP should have also called her rather than hunting for the sister. It doesn't matter if grandma was on the other side of the country, should could still... * Give OP the contact info of the boy's mom, * Call her other sister and threaten the f- out of her to get to OP's place and look after her nephew, * Coordinate with the boy's mom to find another relative, friend, neighbor, coworker, etc. able to come and get the child, * Speak with her grandson, comfort him, get details from him, etc. * Knows what is going on, * Provide some help to OP on looking after the kid -- even if just moral support, etc.

The girlfriend was 100 percent at fault. Uf she couldn't take care of the boy, why agree to watch him? She should have asked you over the phone at least, not just abandon him. So many things could have gone wrong, lucky for the girlfriend it workwd out. It was nice tou gave the boy a good time, and him saying he doesn't have a male role model was heartbreaking. The mother was doing all she could, she had to work since the boys father is not around. Calling CPS and starting an investigation was the best thing you did for the boy and his mother. You could have called the police to report the abandoned child. The girlfriend brought all that trouble upon herself. All she had to do was tell the mother she was going to a resort and couldn't watch the boy, call you to ask if you could watch him, or take care of him as she said she would. The trip wasn't just a girls trip, she was cheating on you. Why else go no contact while on the girls trip. She thought you would just take responsibility for the boy without asking any questions. You dodged a huge bullet, she would have done much worse to you if you stayed with her.
