Thanks so much for checking out this video everyone. They knew Stan was in his last days so they had filmed like the last 5 cameos in advance. But if you notice, Stan is reading a Mallrats script supposedly on his way to the audition. But Stan was in such failing health that they weren't able to use his voice. So Kevin Fiege approached Kevin Smith to see if there was any audio that they could use and he gladly helped out. It really is a beautiful story. Kevin had given Stan his big break into movies and in one of his last appearances they brought it back to Stan's first real role in Hollywood.

Comic bookie story: The original Captain Marvel was a character from Fawcett Comics - the character now known as Shazam. DC filed suit claiming Captain Marvel was a rip off of Superman. Fawcett stopped publishing Captain Marvel Comics. Marvel Comics wasn't even known as "Marvel Comics" at the time (Timely and Atlas were predecessors). The copyright on the name Captain Marvel ended and Marvel Comics scooped it up - creating a male Kree Captain Mar-Vell who is misidentified as a super-hero (there's one on every corner) because of his Kree uniform (the green and white one that was teased just before Carol gets the red, blue and gold version). His "super-powers" are Kree technology but he eventually gets the "Captain Marvel" powers on display here. There's an explosion where Captain Marvel and Carol Danvers are involved and Carol gains Captain Marvel super-powers and assumes the name Ms Marvel*. Time passes Captain Marvel dies - other characters assume the name (to preserve the copyright) and Carol goes thru name changes as well (Binary and Warbird) before assuming the title of Captain Marvel. *There has been a cheeky cross referencing of characters between Marvel & DC (sort of friendly adversary - okay we'll both do it and neither of us will sue the other). Carol Danvers directly references Supergirl by combining both her Kryptonian name Kara Zor-El and her secret identity Linda Danvers and both have pet cats with super powers. Marvel even hired Jim Mooney, the artist who drew the original Supergirl stories for Action Comics, to draw the MS Marvel comics.

*Video Spoiler* *Jen's MCU Reviews/Rankings:* *Captain Marvel:* Generally enjoyed it. Not favourite MCU movie. Liked her sense of humour. Liked the storyline and twists. Longer than it should have. Liked Coulson's appearance. Appreciate a female lead superhero movie. Not enough spotlight given to her power. *6.5/10* *My Opinion:* The trailers never got me hyped for this movie. Ultimately, I never hated it, it was just kinda nothing. Very average and felt like a phase 1 origin movie. A strange place to introduce her character i think. A little boring at times but I like Fury and the skrulls. Fury's eye was funny at the time but a rubbish reason. Brie Larson I think was treated unfairly at times for sure. *4/10* *Jen's Rankings:* • Avengers: Infinity War *10/10* • Black Panther *9.5/10* • Captain America: Civil War *9/10* • Thor: Ragnarok *9/10* • The Avengers *8.5/10* • Iron Man 3 *8.5/10* • Thor: The Dark World *8.5/10* • Captain America: The Winter Soldier *8.5/10* • Ant-man *8.5/10* • Thor *8.5/10* • Avengers: Age of Ultron *8/10* • Guardians of the Galaxy 2 *8/10* • Iron Man *(Not rated)* • Iron Man 2 *7.5/10* • Doctor Strange *7/10* • Spider-Man: Homecoming *7/10* • Ant-Man and the Wasp *7/10* • Captain America: The First Avenger *6.5/10* • Hulk *6.5/10* • *Captain Marvel* *6.5/10* • Guardians of the Galaxy *6/10*

Killing Coulson did that trick. And, from a script perspective, it made sense as well... to instagate the team to reform after the shitshow on the Helicarrier... 2) Joss Whedon was writing the script for Avengers together with Zak Penn (Joss also directed the movie). 3) Avengers came out in 2012, in the end of 2012, Agents of Shield got a greenlight from Marvel Television. So in case no one covered this. Mar-vell in comics was a Kree who came to earth and eventually came to disagree with the Kree on a number of things. He and yes in comics the character is a he. Became a super hero taking the name Captain Marvel... Carol Danvers was his love interest in the 70s I think, when she got hit with a power wave during an experiment gone wrong. She became Ms. Marvel in CM's honour. Eventually as both the two characters lead comics stopped selling they were removed from single issues. Ms Marvel would go through some awful storylines that eventually ended up with her essense being accidentally stolen permanently by Rogue making her a different and very cold character as her life was basically taken away and combined into Rogue... which is how Rogue became an X-Man. Carol eventually takes up the mantle of Captain Marvel after his "death" and that is kind of where the modern character was born. Kelly DeConnick has a fabulous run of a couple of years covering these changes and basically is the basis for the MCU version. As someone who read a lot of the post Civil War Ms Marvel and Captain Marvel I was excited for this movie but it did not hold up as well as I hoped. I thought Brie did OK but I think the storyline was weak. There was just too much to do in a short period.

As far as the controversy goes, I think one of the biggest issues was that you already had some really great female superheroes in the MCU that Marvel kinda just pushed the side (namely, Black Widow and Scarlet Witch) that the fans loved and had wanted to see have their own movies for a while, only for Captain Marvel to be the one to get the "first female superhero" movie of the MCU, shoved in between the finale of over a decade of build up, for what was ultimately - in my opinion any way - a role that didn't need to exist. I think the somewhat strong "feminism" and political messaging throughout its build up and in its trailer, in addition to the comments Brie Larson had made and the perception of her being "unlikable" just added to the fire. I absolutely do not believe that this movie would've received the backlash it did had it happened after Phase 3. I also don't believe that this movie would've been as divisive had Brie Larson not said what she said. Wonder Woman, which treads on very similar lines in its own universe and came out BEFORE this movie, was not nearly as decisive or politicized and was viewed at the time (and still is by many) as the best movie in the DCEU.

I went into this movie being excited about what Captain Marvel would add to the universe. But her character really didn't have that much of an arc, and I didn't feel a lot of heart to the movie - I found it pretty basic. It was of course marketed as a woman power movie, but that doesn't mean a lot when the character doesn't have a lot of arc. Her flashbacks of falling weren't changed much by her memories being blocked, and that all along, after falling, she stood back up. Remembering your past and removing a piece of tech suppressing your abilities isn't much of an arc. I saw sections of comics with her as a character, and she displayed emotions there - but I didn't see a lot here. That would have added a lot. Really waiting for the Endgame reaction!

All it needed was a few tweaks, honestly. They could have had something good if they played up her insecurities early in the film - perhaps she's too eager to prove herself and often gets goaded into doing reckless or unwise things - and then at the end when she says "I have nothing to prove to you" it feels like she's grown. Her arc could have been from "desperate for external validation" to "secure in her innate worth". That might even have been what they were going for, but it didn't land.

Agreed that the backlash was heavy handed. There are a lot of people that were super defensive for the critical view of men in the form of the biker and the flashback male pilot... but they fail to highlight the fact that Fury, Colson, and even Talos modeled a balanced and feminist behavior. They didn't immediately categorize Danvers or Rambeau as female. Unlike biker and pilot, they identified them as a superhuman being and a fighter pilot first. It's not about vilifying men. It's about modeling appropriate and inappropriate behavior as well as normalizing the appropriate behavior. Honestly, I've seen a lot of inappropriate behavior towards women from men (women too). Constructive criticism is good, some people just won't like this movie and that's ok but this HUGE outrage over Brie Larson and this movie I just don't believe is deserved. Next is ENDGAME!!!! I can't wait to see her reaction to that movie!

Well the thing is, Brie Larson herself spread "hate" herself, that's a BIG part of why people don't like her, it didn't come out of nowhere. Wonder Woman has a LOT of feminist undertones but Gal Gadot has never been combative, unpleasant and unwelcoming to a large segment of her audience. (Also kinda ironic you mention that that's the point of a superhero... when she assaulted that dude in the motorcycle but that point has been beaten to death by now so I wont really bother with it)
@vkdeen75703 жыл бұрын
it was a meh movie to me personally but it did get some over the top hate. brie was unnecessarily antagonising and controversial but that's not the movies fault. I also think it suffered from the fact that ppl wanted a bw movie especially as the first female lead mcu movie for me it was a 6/10 not dreadful but certainly 1 of the weaker mcu movies (but that is a good standard)
@stefan35973 жыл бұрын
I think a lot of people realy overreacted on hating larson without knowing why. The statement she made wasnt even that bad, if a movie doesnt appeal to a specific audience and that aucience is giving it bad reviews then obviously their opinions shouldnt be what people take away from a movie.

In the comics, Carol was working a dude(forgot his "name") on some stuff when something went down and it was revealed that he was an alien named Mar Vell. They was an explosion and some kree energy/DNA mixing with hers and that's how she got her powers.Later on, she used his(Mar Vell was a dude, the original captain Marvel) name inspiration and became Miss Marvel (before revamping herself into Captain Marvel later on)

6:49 I like casting like this, where they get actual relatives (they are actually twins here) to play as something other than actual relatives. Got a small list of these, such as Sarah Conner in Terminator 2 having her real life twin sister play her reflection to avoid showing the movie equipment in a real mirror, as well as Dark having the antagonist (forgot his name, but represents 3 generations of the same guy) have the oldest and adult versions played by the father and son. In Black Panther, the younger version of King T'Chaka was played by the son who played the older King T'Chaka.

It was a “eh” movie and a little on the nose IMO. I think if they had spent as much time on character development as they did on a “relevant” narrative then it would have been an amazing movie with a character everyone loved. Not a bad movie, but it was a good contrast to Endgame.
@spirittammyk3 жыл бұрын
I still think she was useless in End Game. Everything she did Thor could have done and they could have just used her to start of phase 4 considering they were counting on Captain Marvel to be the replacement of Iron Man as the central MCU character.

@swaswj4143 жыл бұрын
I'm sure this has been answered a hundred times before I even watched the video, but "Captain Marvel" in the original 1967 comics was Mar-Vell (a male Kree). Carol Danvers made her debut in 1977 and was in an explosion with Mar-Vell like the movie, but her powers came from him, not an Infinity Stone. She went by Ms. Marvel for years before inheriting the title Captain Marvel, after Mar-Vell's death and with Steve Roger's recommendation. The little girl in the movie, Monica Rambeau, actually became Captain Marvel in the comics way back in 1982, while Carol didn't get the title until 2012. Superhero names in comics are very often passed on to multiple holders. Jane Foster even became Thor for a time.

Jen brings up a really good point about us not getting to see a story about her powers. Although I do think we got to see some progression in that regard, I definitely don't think we got to see enough as might be expected out of a hero's origin story. I won't fault anyone for this, as they had so many things going on. What everyone had to do was astronomical. They had to introduce not only one character and backstory, but basically introduce 2 species. They also had to introduce a Thanos-level power and come up with a good enough explanation as to why they were not previously involved. They also had to fit everything into one movie. That's a really tough job. A lot of the other movies really got to grow and had their own breathing room, so they could really take their time with the hero and their struggle. Some of them even got several movies to do this, like Thor and Iron Man. I think they did about the best they could do with what they had going for them
