When people say artists shouldn't use references, it's like saying a cook shouldn't use a recipe. It's nonsensical. You need to know the physical makeup of something to ever get to the point where you CAN draw it from imagination.

EpicSC yeah even when you’re drawing from imagination you’re still just referencing your own visual library of what you’ve seen and using that, references help you build that visual library and help you know how to draw it later on from imagination

I think most artist suffer from the ''draw from imagination'' complex. I was a victim of that aswell lol, I only realized my mistake like 4 months ago, and I drastically got better at drawing, better than my 2 years of trying to draw from imagination. Alot of artists suffer from self depreciation problem, and telling themselves that they're no good at all then start to give up. I think the toughest stage in art isn't drawing, it's acknowledging that you will eventually get better. And I'm glad I got out the drawing from imagination delusion off my head. Your video is really inspiring.

art is not learned through talent, that's true because most artists of today started from a young age....and obviously you learn so much more back then. But let's say you do have talent, it does still take hard work to reach the highest level of art. even with talent.
@LemonSBugz
@LemonSBugz 4 жыл бұрын
"Talented" people just know what to focuss about drawing and know how to makes perfect practice. If you look at those "talented" people, you'll know they've been through a lot. Even you are the same age as them, but you may practice blindly, while the "talented" people figure it out what to focuss first and what to do later. Given the same amount of time, their result would be better than someone who doesn't know how to practice in time. Also you can ask them for help improving your art because they figured the way to make perfect practice. Just don't be jealous of those so-called "talented" people. They are people who've been through a lot of shit.
@yuuxing8761
@yuuxing8761 4 жыл бұрын
i dont think talent is a thing, no one is born being a master at something, it is learnt through time and hard work. just saying someone has talent is disregarding the countless hours that someone put into their art and saying as if they were just born with this skill. its offensive to many artists imo to call them talented, even if it is said with a positive motive. even if you see an artist at 10 or 11 that is as good as someone who is in their 20s, that doesnt mean the child was born with this ability, it was most likely because they were exposed to art when they were little, children learn a lot faster than adults

I also 'trace' to study aswell (by drawing objects on the image to see how it's structered instead of just tracing the lines)

My mind is blown right now. Everything you just described in this video is my EXACT MINDSET. I have that same sense of extreme pride and stubbornness when it comes to drawing from reference and ESPECIALLY studying other artists. I’m always thinking to myself: “I’m too good to study from other artists. Pft. I already knew that. Pft I can totally draw that too” but as soon as I put my pen on the canvas, nothing. But now I’m gonna dedicate a full week to mastering FORM. All my drawings lack form and I swear to God I’m gonna master it if it’s the last thing I do. Thank you Kuzomari sir 🙏

My aversion to copying and using references started because of a classmate I had in elementary school. She used to trace stuff from anime episodes and google images and what not and pass it off as her own drawings so teachers and other classmates would praise her. Everytime I tried to tell people that the drawings were traced and I knew where she'd gotten them from I got dismissed as "jealous" and "attention-seeking". I hated that so much that I started avoiding using references and copying because I wanted to show that I was better than her. Luckily now I'm not as insecure about that and I've gotten rid of that mentality almost completely.

As i a kid i was also quite stupid, as i mentally demeaned myself, and came up with delusional logic. My memory was borderline non existent, and i had trouble remembering simple things like names. It wasnt until december 2019, that i felt like i was mentally free, also from drawing. Then i got into some science, fell into more mental rabbit holes, but that was all part of the fun. Here i am now, i still have a bad memory, but i feel a lot more intelligent and confident. The idea of generalizations, building a foundation, etc., helped me realize i was capable of more than i thought. Thanks for sharing your story Kuzo, it was very relatable and wholesome.

What I like to do (first) is work on what you can TELL is wrong with your drawings because some things aren’t as easy to pick out of your art. Focus on those things for a while and once you feel ready start looking at art from professionals, it really helps to stare at understand how tense or relaxed (etc) the body can be. Then you can start with anatomy practice, at least that’s how I like doing things. This is just my practice you don’t have to follow and hell, maybe my style of practicing isn’t good

I totally resonate with this so much. I'm 28 and i've been "drawing" ever since i was a kid. Like you, dragon ball z was what got me into drawing, anime, and manga. I used to just copy and copy and copy. However, since finishing high school (10 years ago), I haven't drawn with the same passion since. I'll sketch something every other week or month and just haaate what I've produced. Andit's because I don't do any meaningful or mindful study and practice. I watch videos, I follow artists on instagram, I read books, all in the hopes that I'd just level up from that. But, no, I have to put pencil to paper and do the work! Thanks for making these videos. I believe they'll help me a lot in grounding myself and getting back into art.

I seriously went through the same thing. I always messed around in art class but our teacher never really taught us anything. He taught us basic shading techniques and touched on perspective a little but it never made sense or clicked. We never did exercises in these activities to learn them. I don't blame my art teacher for everything though, I also blame myself for not actually trying to understand how to truly draw. I would just mess around and say hey I'm gonna try manga too and had those "How to draw manga books" too. I seriously cringe at myself looking back on those times. Once I left High school is when I took art more seriously. I then went on a path of self discovery. I think Andrew Loomis books were a step in the right direction for me and I thank you for sharing your story.Your story helps me on my path of learning art too. I realize now that I have to truly try my best to understand art to become better. I hate that I was too blinded by my own pride in my work. I hope to continue learning art and truly become an artist.

I can REALLY relate to this!! For years I never used references only my own mind to memorised things but I never really improved. Once I was 14 I started using references and of course my art really improved, I'd say I was almost good then but I wasn't because all it taught me to do was copy. I spent years afterwards sucking because I never realized that I needed to actually learn the fundamentals of art as that's what everything is based on. This year I really want to make a manga series, have the story worked out and everything I just know i need to really learn perspective and anatomy rn it feels like an impossible task but Im gonna do everything I can to reach it.

I just picked up drawing a month ago and I'm on the perspective phase of learning right now after trying out a yikesish portrait. A week of drawing wire frame mannequins produces some interesting results and I've found improvement in the shoulders and upper torso. I feel like if I try a portrait again, it'll be less yikes now. (Lower torso and hips is still a dumpster fire, but maybe i'll get to that after another week.) Of all the "tutorials" I've watched, I think the best I've come across are your anatomy practice sketches.

When I first started drawing most of my family besides my mom and dad thought I was tracing, (they just couldn't believe it lol) but that quickly changed one day when my grandma saw me almost perfectly drawing the flowers that were painted on her table lamp, and of course like all grandma's she spread the word throughout the rest of the family

thank for your story. I mean it's very uses full for me as a beginner artist i just want drawing for fun and i don't event know the basic about proportion shading or pose before. I just drawing what i like just like i child.Ya after two years in art school i think you must know the basic about drawing like shadow, pose ,and other. Art isn't hard to study but first you must know what your art style it make you more enjoying and don't compere your drawing to other artists drawing and feel bad about your drawing.
