My cat opened my front door a couple weeks ago when my dad came over and was talking with me outside. This was the first time she’s been outside more than just 1 foot outside the door. Now she sits by the door longing to explore and I just can’t take it anymore. I’m gonna buy a harness or something and start taking her on walks if she will let me. She’s obsessed. I think she realized she can do more than just chirp at the birds, she can actually eat them.

Pro tip from an animal behaviorist: always pick up your kitty and carry them over the threshold. Don’t let them walk out by themselves. This decreases the chance they’ll wander out on their own if the door is opened. I personally recommend the Sleepypod martingale harness. The martingale makes it pretty secure. If you have issues with them trying to escape the equipment, try a backpack or stroller instead. And practice recall with your cat with some high-value freeze-dried treats just to be safe! Hope your kitty enjoys exploring!

It's unfortunately far easier to make a full body UPF cover with a balaclava that has ear covers, than an SPF that's guaranteed to not have any bad effects for him. Cats lick their skin, which is a huge issue in making stuff cat safe. If there hadn't been that, you could even have used henna in low amounts (not enough to look red-brow) as SPF. But ingesting henna can cause vomiting and diarrhea in both humans and cats, so it is much too risky. :(

I would recommend getting him a raincoat made for dogs the ones that cover the legs too. That should cover his head and most of his bottom too and they’re a light fabric so it should be too hot! Just an idea :)

Try taking an umbrella with you, and if you don’t want to hold it get the kind that you can attach to a chair/stroller. My husky had to be fully shaved for medical reasons when we rescued him (grew back beautifully and he’s fine) but couldn’t miss his beloved walks. I took a huge umbrella to shield him and it worked great!

in case anyone is wondering why this is so important, cats can get skin cancer. Light colored and hairless cats are especially prone, and doubly so if they spend a lot of time outside. My family cat was indoor/outdoor for many years and she unfortunately passed from squamice cell carcinoma due to sun exposure last year, it first appeared on her nose and ear tips and eventually spread from her nose to her throat. If you have any cat who spends a lot of time outside and you notice raised dark bumps on their nose or ears take them to the vet and get the bumps biopsied.

So sorry you had to go through that. My ginger male, Hamish was an indoor/ outdoor cat, but he loved his hunting trips in the field across the street. We lived in the country so traffic wasn't the issue. He only let me know riiiiight before he passed away that he even had a lung issue, quietly trying to cough when I wasn't in the room or whatever. I never heard a wheeze until that night. He came to me, laid his head in my shoulder and wheezed. I called the emergency vet and they did x-rayed him and his lungs were filled with tumors! I let him pass on my arms. He seemed to smile at me. He had a good 15 years with us. I still miss him, tho. I loved that punchy boy.

I lived next door to a woman in Houston,Texas that had 30 of these cats at one time. She invited me to her home one time, and the moment I walked in ...no words. She was a sweetheart and she loved every single one of them. I counted 4 urns on her fireplace mantle. I had to use her powder room and I walked in, closed the door, and 3 of them jumped out of the tub. I had never seen that type of cat in person. Just on tv. They’re creepy but very sweet.
