Great video, David! You should get yourself a set of conical drill bits. They've changed my life when it comes to making holes in thin metal (and other weird stuff). When I fitted my old saw for the new screws (as I've mentioned on Discourse), I used a conical drill bit for the saw blade. It was like cutting butter! Very interesting video-although I don't have a lathe and can't have one in my apartment. But some day ...

I'll have to look into the drill bits, thanks!

Your video has given me the motivation to upgrade my HFT lathe, but I think the schematic in your link has a mistake. It looks like the output of the reversing switch is a dead short. Am I reading it wrong?

Yes, I see what you mean. I drew the switch wrong. Thanks for pointing it out!

Hi David. It's a bummer about the motor. Are you sure you bent the shaft and not the flywheel? One thing I noticed is that you edited the wiring of the electronics twice. It looks like it's from 2 slightly different camera angles tho'. Oh, one last thing. Did you add heatsink compound to the rectifier before you mounted it? Those generate an awful lot of heat so you might think of doing that and also adding a computer fan to the project box to keep things cool. I'm interested in how this turns out. A friend gave me a HF lathe and it needs a new motor too. My shop is an old woodshed and I can't wire it for electrical unless I bring it to code and get permits, so I'm wiring it for 12VDC (which doesn't need permits). When I'm done, I'll plug the shed into an extension cord on the outside and the inside will have a 12V distribution box to power the lights and lathe.

Yeah, the first time I wired it I didn't have the motor secured and when I plugged it in it jumped off the vice onto the floor. I tried to catch it but just ended up smashing my finger. The next day I wired it up again when I found it was bent. It's definitely the shaft,. I took the fly wheel off and the shaft wobbles like crazy.
