Mary Martin became popular on Broadway and received attention in the national media singing "My Heart Belongs to Daddy". "Mary stopped the show with "My Heart Belongs to Daddy". With that one song in the second act, she became a star 'overnight'."[4] Martin reprised the song in Night and Day, (the Hollywood "biographical" movie about Porter) during the film in an audition as herself for Porter (Cary Grant).

Last time I saw this, was as a little girl on a black and white television in the 60s. It left a lasting impression😊

Many have sung the song but Mary Martin was the very first in "Leave It To Me" -- Broadway 1938. It was her first show and she had a small part. This clip is somewhat of a re-creation of the original. BTW Gene Kelly was in the chorus in the 1938 Broadway version.

he musical this is from, LEAVE IT TO ME, is based on the 1933 film CLEAR ALL WIRES, which I recommend as a classic piece of Lee Tracy "Wisecracking Reporter" flim-lammery.

In the original show, one of the chorus boys was a young Gene Kelly.

So grateful to see this. Marilyn Monroe also worked the hell out of this song.

This film was beautiful., Historically somewhat inaccurate. Certainly he wished he were as gorgeous as Cary. What IS historically interesting and important this song. We see here the Real Mary Martin who Cole did discover and who sang this originally. A unique opportunity as there were no digital video cameras to film the plethora of Brilliant Broadway Musicals between the 1920's and 1960's. In earlier decades shows were written for women like Mary Martin, Ethel Merman, Gertrude Lawrence. Thanks

globalman Not to mention that Cole Porter was gay. Was Cary? Some say yes, some say no. He shared a cosy home with Randolph Scott and they were pictured in Life Magazine (I think it was) being very domestic wearing matching aprons. Of course this film could never have shown Cole Porter as a homosexual. Not at that time when it was illegal.

They wanted to make a movie about Cole Porter. He told them yes if Cary Grant played him. And there you have it.

Old post, I know. But I do have the answer: it's from the original musical staging. Mary Martin's character gets stranded in Siberia and then sings this song while doing a striptease. (It's a musical comedy plot, it's just as ridiculous as it sounds!)
