People dislike the Shadow, because Honda managed to embarrass Harley Davidson by winning in court when Harley tried to sue them. Honda built a split pin crank engine that sounds like a Harley and competes with an 883 at a cost of $6500 USD brand new.

Nice thing about the 750 is alot of the bigger bikes alot of people don't use the full range of the motor because the CC is sooo big, with the 750, it works the ENTIRE motor, proving time and time again that it's a work horse of a bike, and I've heard of some harley owners have a shadow as a alternative.

Great rant Laddie, love it...For those that think it's slow, try a horse and cart, is it slow now? you could do 80 miles in one hour on that motorcycle, it wasen't that long ago a 750 was all there was and it was a monster, but ego's grew out of control and they followed the turds i mean herds. For those that say you will get bored with it, they should try doing cones, and picking it up, and backing it through cones, and doing hill starts, and doing friction zone turns, then they won't get so bored with it, a monkey can ride in a straight line but that's not riding a motorcycle, most MSF classes are 250 for a reason....Beautiful bike, Ride safe my mate.

Was going up a big hill against a stiff headwind at 80 and realized I was full throttle and backed off a little. Ordered a replacement for the stock seat immediately afterwards; but the bike has been perfect for one person on the highway with a travel kit , liter of oil and gas, and weekend worth of luggage. Feels great and light riding around town. Faster than everything except sports bikes and supercars in traffic.

I have always loved the 750 line. From my first bike until recently, I pretty much always had one in the stable. The last was a 750 Aero and I sold it to one of my kids (with the understanding that he has to sell it back to me). He learned to ride on it. Other than the starter relay, never gave me a single problem. IMO, it's the best all around cruiser for the money. Reliable, comfortable, customizable. It is lighter than a lot of cruisers, but heavy enough to reduce the shock value if you want to transition to heavier bikes. In fact, it's supposed to be coming home for a little spring service soon. Gotta give it a ride to find all the squawks, right?

About 6 months ago I bought a 2015 shadow aero 750. I looked long and hard at all my options, but every time I landed on either the shadow or a small trail or something. Having bought it, and learning how to ride on it, getting my endorsement on it. I love it. The gas mileage i have come to find is absurd, its low COG makes it a super smooth ride, even in windy conditions. As you said it keeps up with traffic just fine, and can still get out of a pickle if it needs to. Sure its not a bottle rocket, but it doesn't need nor try to be. As I've come to know mine, its a couch on wheels. I suspect I'll be riding mine for many years to come. Just ordered some saddlebags and some other gubbins to boot. It could do a bit more with a 6 speed, but frankly I don't have any problems at 60-70 as is.

Great video as always. On the topic of the shadow being "slow" here's my two cents on that. I've been going back and forth with my brother for two years on this very thing. He's a sport bike guy. I'm a cruiser guy. He's constantly tried to talk me into a bigger cruiser for the higher speeds and we hit a solution this summer. His argument is that 100 is my top speed so doing 90 will abuse my engine. That's proving to be untrue and my honda loves to crush highways at 80-90 and I've made very cheap and easy mods. I could spend buttloads more on a harley softail standard or a yamaha raider. But I'm getting 30 mph top speed at best with lots of money into the bike to do those speeds with my maintenance costs increasing by leaps and bounds. We like to ride to bike dealerships and just look at and learn about new bikes and the market out there on older bikes. I've decided that the shadow is a perfect cruiser and to get a vfr800 as a third motorcycle. My other other is a vintage cb750 I'm turning into a denver chopper inspired build for bike shows. A small "beginner sport touring bike like the vfr800 crushes every cruiser I've ever been on. You want speed switch bikes. It's just more logical to me than building a drag harley. But then again I'm building a cb750 chopper that i want to make wicked fast with a turbo just for the laughs at shows.

I think the best thing about these bikes was just kicking back and cruising. The engine is pretty awesome for what it is -SOC three valve. Shadow 750 does sound REALLY good and looks awesome.

I have a 2006 H-D Sportster 1200L, which is physically no bigger than that Shadow. Yes the engine is bigger, but it's not fast. I ride a Sportster for two reasons. The sound, and the feel. And I chose the L model because it has cast wheels and tubeless tires. I would have no problem at all with the Shadow 750, if not for the tube type tires. I've been riding for almost 49 years now, and I have had a LOT of flat tires. A flat tire with tube type tires means a tow truck, and in a couple of cases, it meant a tow truck, a 2 day stay in a motel, and a very expensive dealer visit. Most of the time you can simply plug a tubeless tire, reinflate it, and be on your way. I am getting close to 65, and I can no longer deal with the physical hassles or the expense of having a flat with tube type tires. Honda has the ability to put tubeless tires on their bikes. Check out the 1986 and 1987 Honda Rebel 450's wheels. They look just like the wheels on that Shadow until you look really close. They are designed for tubeless tires. Honda only used them on that one bike, for 2 years, and they were never seen again. And that's a shame. It's 2024, and we are still using 1940s tire technology on motorcycles. And it can be very dangerous and very expensive.

Don't worry about what other people like. If a bike is fun to ride, does what you need it to do and is reliable, it is a good motorcycle. Ran my '06 Shadow 750 Aero from Calgary Canada to Greeley Colorado last fall (a bit over 1000 miles each way). Could cruise at 80 mph on the interstate for the most part but the throttle was full open and couldn't hold it uphill. Other than that it was perfect for the long ride - did near 8 hours a day over 3 days each way and not a single issue other than having to stop for gas about every hour.

I have a 2003 750 ACE, it seems to max out at 60mph. Not that I need to ride faster in town, but where I live, a few of the places I would like to go require riding highway and interstate, which seems scary when you can't go past 60mph. All the cars around doing all kinds of crazy maneuvers to pass you. My frustration with the ACE started because prior to it I had a 1983 Magna 750 which was way faster and lighter, and it's not like the engine doesn't have the strength, it does, but the bike won't accelerate more. I'm waiting to do the sprocket and chain modification hoping that will let the engine do its thing better.
@LuckyAcesRiding9 ай бұрын
Is it just not accelerating beyond 60mph? I know my Aero keeps pulling beyond 70 but not very fast. The 80's bikes Honda put out can run circles around the new models.
@jalzate9 ай бұрын
@@LuckyAcesRiding I Guess I need to retest. Not haven't a tachometer it feels like the engine is going all the way, but maybe I need to try in a good stretch of road. With the magna I remember testing in about a mile of an avenue with no lights, stops, or traffic, and it was doing 70 in a moment. The shadow I've taken on a local highway and like I say, it feels like it's doing all and like I need to shift one more but I'm already on fifth. Maybe I need to brave the causeway and see how it behaves. I think I'm in a loop where I don't trust the bike because it seems to not accelerate beyond a point, and I don't try to accelerate beyond that point because I don't trust the bike enough. Btw I recently rode a rebel 1100 {DCT unfortunately though) and it gave me some of that magna vibe, lighter, more powerful. I just didn't like the deceleration with the automatic transmission, it felt clunky, like the bike doesn't know if you want to slow down or take off. But I imagine the manual version must be just awesome. The positives of the shadow however are the look and comfort (especially with passenger), there's no denying that, and it's perfect in town.
@LuckyAcesRiding9 ай бұрын
I know what you mean, you don't have the confidence in the bike to get out the way at highway speeds if necessary. I like middleweights. Had a vulcan 900. Front fork was definitely budget. Just a 5 spd. Horrible seating position. Vibrated like crazy over 70. Then it had to go. I like cheap, metric bikes snd still do. I traded it in for my first Harley, a heritage. The Harley is 730 lbs but feels like 600. Its better in every measurable category. And best of all it looks and feels the part. Some thing i didnt understand coming from a garage full of metrics.
@LuckyAcesRiding9 ай бұрын
A lot of the sub 1000cc bikes I feel are made for a different customer than your Heritage or even the Kawi Mean Streak I bought. Heck even that has a better "fit and finish" feel than the Shadow. Plus the buzz of the engine above 70 mph like what you experienced with the Vulcan 900 is nearly non-existant with the larger displacement engine. I feel bikes like the Shadow 750 and similar are for people who want to ride from time to time and bikes like your Heritage are for those who plan on spending a lot of time in the saddle.

@@LuckyAcesRiding may be right! I just like the bikes in general. Regardless of make. I too own a 23 Voyager. Its a pig on fuel. Its the closest thing to a Harley full dresser w/o the price tag. But as much as i adore that bike. Its clear as day, now, it most definitely isnt a Harley. Just shocks me cuz i never really thought much of the brand till now. In the world of cruisers Harley just kills it. Fit and finish is grand canyon wide in quality compared to my Voyager. Power, efficiency, comfort and rideability are all superior. My main point was a light "touring" bike from Harley felt just like a middleweight metric cruiser...but just better. Every where. I dont mean to sound like im pissing on your shadow. Would totally dig it. That wasnt the point. I just think i finally seen some thing clear as day that some how elluded me till now

The 750 is happiest about 65 mph. It will run 100-110 but takes a little while to get there. If you are wanting something comfortable and fun to ride that 750 Spirit works but if you want zippy in traffic I'd look at a naked/standard bike in the 500-650cc range.

I just like mine, I don't love it. The only single thing the Shadow really seems going for it is that... it's pretty. I've only owned mine a month and already I got a laundry list of hurt: Things I loathe about my Shadow (compared to my 80's Honda bikes): 1) The ignition key is danging off the side. I have to take it off my key ring and put it back on every time I get on or off the bike. The ignition key belongs at the top of the front forks where you can't forget it, and where it's supported and can rest on the top of the forks. You know this if you have a big wad of keys on your key chain. 2) The vacuum actuated fuel petcock had a recall on it, which failed right off the bat. When it fails, even when switched on, your bike gets zero fuel and won't crank. 3) The footpegs are too far forward; where I am use to putting my feet, there is nothing but dead air 4) The rear footpegs are sky high... you can't move your feet back and forth from front to back say if you get a leg cramp while driving 5) There's a lot of safety switch garbage on the bike that will keep the bike from cranking or just kill it and you don't know why. For example, try to put the bike in gear when the footpeg is down, and the bike just suddenly and inexplicably... dies 6) It's like driving around a piece of silvware that you have to clean and polish... all the friggin time 7) A lot of parts like the fenders are made of... not metal... but plastic. metal if it gets bent up or scratched, you and straighten out, derust, repaint. not so with plastic 8) The battery is terribly undersized for it; a new battery gives you about 60 seconds of crank time before it's flat dead 9) Why does my carb motorcycle... have an ECM computer... that could fail??? It makes no sense. 10) No fuel gauge, even though the fuel cap is right there next to the speedo on the tank. You could put a spiral rod float operated fuel gauge there instead of a gas cap. 11) No 12v out on the handlebars or cigarette lighter, to plug any accessory in, like a radar detector. I'll have to yet again tap into the headlight low beam circuit. 12) Tires are expensive for it 13) It doesn't look like you could take the head off the bike, without taking the entire engine out of the bike and disassembling everything completely. Eventually, you are going to have to do this to replace the rings and cylinder head. It doesn't look like the carb is easy to take out either, and this you have to do all the time to clean it. 14) The battery, which you have to get to all the time (like to connect jumping cables to), is under the seat, under another plastic cover, instead of off the side of the bike. Why? 15) No luggage carrying capacity whatsoever. You have to add aftermarket stuff, and there really are not any good options for a big rack on the back or sissy bar. They all are pretty small and useless. There are a few super tall sissy bars out there, but they look kind of out of place on the Shadow. I'm just going to have to build my own rack. 16) The tool and manual compartment is a disaster of design, with a separator between the two sides... one for their tools, one for the user manual. When I bought mine both were missing. Okay, so I'll stick my own bag of tools in there. No can do, the completely needless half height separator wall prevents that. Worse, there's way more space around this compartment that it could have been made substantially bigger. Ditto for making the battery box bigger, they could of done that so you could of swapped in a bigger traditional sized motorcycle battery. 17) The ECM sits on top of the battery, and you have to move it around every time you get at the battery, flexing the wires into it. I tried to find a dedicated place shuffling around in there where I wouldn't have to that, but no luck. 18) The rear fender does not go all the way down past the rear swing arm, which means you get sand and dirt every time you drive accumulating on that flat swing arm surface right in front of the rear tire. Why? I'm seriously thinking extending the rear fender with some riveted on rubber car tire material flat... or something. 19) Not a deal breaker, but the choke is located right between two hot cyldiners. Usually you only need to turn it on when they are cold... but if you forget to push it back in, and they are hot? 20) The fuel petcock directions for ON, OFF, and Reserve are shifted 90 degrees out of sync compared to all my other bikes. ON is backwards, OFF is down, and RES is forward... instead of my other bikes, where it makes a whole lot more sense... ON is up, OFF is backwards, and RES is down Honda has definitely went down hill with the Shadow or thrown common sense out the window. They were doing everything right, but I can only guess they tried to copy a Harley look, and thusly did everything... now... wrong? Just to be pretty? Or look like a Harley? I don't know. I love my other Hondas, but the Shadow.. I'm like... kind of disappointed. What went wrong here, Honda? Did you boot out all the retired engineers, and hire a bunch of millenial engineers fresh out of college who were enamored with their CAD program and never rode a motorcycle? Your really don't realize how annoying these things are about the Shadow if it's like your first bike or the only bike you've ever owned or you came from a Harley. But if like me you're a hardcore in the Honda's Camp 1980's Honda 20 year rider and still driving motorcycles from the 1970's and 1980's golden age of motorcycling... you're like, WTF Honda! Why did you screw up everything everywhere on the Shadow... you were doing most everything before... right. The Shadow 750 is not a beginners bike... I will tell you that... it's too heavy and like driving around a freight train. Start with a 125cc, 250cc.. something infinitely flicable... and then move up to a 450cc. You really don't need more than 450cc in my opinion. 750cc turned out to be overkill. It's a tradeoff, more horsepower means lower mpg. A 450 is about the right balance between the two. A 750cc you're just throwing away gas. Going from my 750cc back to my 250cc is like night and day for thrill to drive. The 250cc is so much more fun to drive.

I had a Harley Fatbob and became ill and couldn't ride for 2 years. I then downsized and purchased a 750 Aero. That bike was in perfect condition, completely stock and ran flawlessly. For it's displacement, it is one of the slowest most sluggish motorcycles I ever owned. It had ABS and the brakes were good. But the combination of a soft clutch and soft engine made it unbearable for me. I bought a Kawasaki 650 Vulcan s and even with a small displacement, it performs twice as good as the shadow in every respect. Little metric v-twins, though reliable, simply don't perform well

I get comments like this often.. most likely because I do 100 miles a day on a rebel 250 or one of my scooters. Sure would I love some more grunt but in the 10 plus years I have beating the piss out of these small bore bikes I honestly feel like I have had more fun just doing the commute to work then most of the big twin bois have on a Sunday ride. It all really boils down to what do you like. What makes you happy. If you got justify it you did something wrong. All the comments "get a real bike" I still don't have a "real" bike but I am out here riding. Stay buzzy bois

On average I imagine you put more miles on that 250 than they do on their big displacement bikes. No one should have to justify anything that makes them happy to anyone else.

No, no, we don't think it's slow, we think it's mostly made of plastic... I bought one sight unseen (other than a picture) as an old Honda fangirl and was surprised when I got it home, how many of the parts on the bike were... plastic. The fenders. The air box cover. The cylinder head covers. The starter cover. Just everywhere. It's a plastic bike I mean really. Really? It's a very pretty bike, and I've settled on love/h8t3 barely on the side of loving it, but pretty is all it's got going for it. Everything Honda did right, they now do wrong to copy Harley to look like a Harley, that got everything wrong. I can rattle off a long list of everything I loathe about the bike, but the small niggling things are the ones that rub you the wrong way every single time you drive it. The keys hanging off the side. The footpegs being way too far forward which makes sitting on it.. uncomfortable. The kickstand kill switch. The undersized battery. The burning your leg on the pipes both on one side. The fact that your right leg cooks, while your left leg freezes. People try to replace the seat and add floorboards to solve these things. I do not recommend this as a first bike. It's a heavy bike. Even though the seat height is low to the ground, it's still a very heavy dangerous bike, esp. when coming to a stop. Riding it akin to sitting on top of a freight train locamotive. Get a classic original Rebel250 if you want an excellent starter bike to make you fall in love with motorcycling. A CMX250 is more akin to being in a nimble WW1 fighter. You can do anything in it, you have total control. I don't know why Honda Shadow riders are in such denial about how their bike really isn't that great. I mean, I came from 1980's Hondas, which I still own and ride, and the differences are night and day. The Honda Shadow is not per say bad, just know what you are getting... a pretty Harley clone on the cheap. Or well, cheaper, I will say that. I wouldn't buy one at full retail price, ever, that's not cheap at all. I sniped mine because the fuel petcock valve had gone bad on mine, the thermostat had gone bad, and the owner was clueless about motorcycles and wanted to unload a lemon quick. Fortunately, these were only $20 worth of parts that were dirt simple to fix, once you diagnosed what was going on.

Does have odometer. I set to 0 when I fill up and when I hit 110 miles or so (to play it safe) I know it's time to find a gas station soon. Having a gauge telling how many miles remaining would be nice, but not a big deal. Once you're familiar with the engine feel and sound, I also don't feel a gear indicator would be helpful, at least to me. Easy to know when to up or downshift just by feel. I'd never look at a gear indicator.
