As a healthcare worker please be an advocate for yourself as a patient idgaf if it irritates the staff! If you don't like a nurse request another one PERIOD and if any attitude comes ask to speak to the nurse manager and file a report! Nurses are regular people that deserve to be held accountable when in the wrong!! Ok I'm done 🙃

I want to tack onto this and say that you can threaten to go to the HR of the hospital. My mom did this once when i was a kid - I was born with a syndrome and often had doctors poking and prodding at me - and the department changed their act REAL FAST.

Yes I completely agree with this!! At the VA I had to advocate for my dad who had cancer of the esophagus and was undergoing chemo and radiation. He was not able to eat or drink much if any and the nurses overseeing him left him all weekend in extreme pain from severe dehydration. I all but led the doctor by the hand to my father explaining his situation. He received a life saving PICC line the same day and was finally able to get the correct amount of fluids to help flush out the chemo he was getting.

Thats good advice but poorly addressed to...in other words that advice is for the person who is with you. Its the husband’s job when a woman is in labor. He should have gotten a different nurse but of course I’m sure he’s polite and didn’t know that. I can relate because my ex husband didn’t fight for my comfort during our child’s birth.

My nephew was just hit by a car last week. He's 17 and was left to die while he was walking to the bus stop for school. He has a TBI- He's confused and gets combative bc of course, he doesn't know what's going on. He kept ripping his sheets off in the hospital bed. His CNA came in the room and said, *_"Keep doing that and we will have to restrain you and we will see how you like THAT!"_* Like holy shit, he's not trying to make your day harder girl, he has a brain injury. Girl yes!!! My last Er visit I was in the worst pain of my life. Worse than labor and everyone that checked on my seem to not care and I got the feeling a few times like a couple of people were annoyed or acting like I was faking or over reacting. I was admitted and diagnosed with Crohn’s and in such a bad flare that the gastroenterologist said he could barely get in to see what was going on because I was so inflamed. Besides him and 1 medical assistant, who felt so bad that I couldn’t have my baby with me the whole stay, I just felt my presence was annoying to them. I pray my disease doesn’t ever put me back in the hospital.

File a complaint when you're ready. No one is going to get fired unless they have had a substantial amount of complaints filed towards them. In that case, they should get fired and you will have done other women a service. I wish you and your family well. Please consider speaking to a therapist about this.

If you decide to have another baby, I hope you are able to have a healing birth experience. I had a traumatic birth with my first son that ended in c-section, but I was able to have my healing vaginal birth with my second. It was everything I had hoped it would be. I went with a birthing center the second time and had a midwife and birthing doula. Don't let anyone let you think you're feelings aren't valid. You can be grateful for your beautiful baby and still dislike your birthing experience.

I actually had a surprise breech and thankfully was still able to give birth naturally at home. At a hospital it would have been an automatic c section. Sending best wishes to u Britney and hope you heal well.

Oh my Lord, Brittany. I am genuinely sorry. I'm an NICU RN and although I don't work in Labour & Delivery persay, I do attend a lot of high risk deliveries and c sections. Believe me when I tell you, your birth experience was not within what is deemed "normal and expected" and was instead borderline barbaric. A HUGE red flag for me was when you spoke of having a full bladder and being unable to pee, and medical staff being remiss on doing anything about it.... even when mentioning to them it was causing you additional discomfort. They should of emptied your bladder via an "in and out" catheter. It is beyond risky and dangerous to allow a woman to labour with a full bladder. The risk of your bladder rupturing was huge. When you spoke of your bladder bleeding during your c-section, it makes me wonder if your bladder was not close to doing so. I am also a huge advocate of pain control. And although it was nobody's fault that the epidurals didn't work (it happens), to administer Pitocin without an epidural is horrendous. Probably some of the worst pain you could inflict on someone. Some may not agree with me, but to allow a woman to labour, with pitocin, with no pain control, while not progessing for almost 4 days straight is criminal (my opinion). It also increases the risk of placental and/or uterine abruption, which has the potential to be life threatening for both mom and baby. They should of done the c section a lot sooner than they did (again, my opinion). You are clearly traumatized. And your feelings are validated. Please be open to some counseling as PTSD is a real possibility... if it isn't affecting you already. You are a beast, Brittany 💪If going through all that didn't prove to you how strong you are, absolutely nothing will. Congratulations... Gia is beautiful (just like her momma). Take care of you ❤

I had pitocin and declined the epidural then at 6cms my water broke and the contractions got really intense and felt like my uterus was being electrocuted. I got up and they couldn't get a read on the baby's heart beat and then they put in a fetal scalp monitor and so because of all these things they told me I had to lay down and stay still so I told my husband I can't do that. I have to get the epidural because I cannot sit still with these. I thought it was just the pitocin. No. I ended up with a c-section with that birth and then went on to hate the epidural though mines worked fine though I did start feeling some pressure. Anyway, went on to have a vaginal birth and the same electric waves and intensity and I did not get the epidural. My next was another C-section before labor. Then my next was another vaginal birth and went into labor on my own and that was the most intense contractions ever. More than pitocin. I was shocked and it lasted longer. The pitocin first felt like period pains until 6cm. My other contractions were......labor is intense.

Same here, I feel like this happens a lot more than women talk about. I had a horrible first birth too. Same thing with nurses being bitchy and like I was an inconvenience. Telling me I'm overreacting with my pain, that I'm lying when I told them I'm pushing as hard as I possibly can. I'll never forget it and it actually made me want to go into nursing because I cannot believe these kinds of ppl would be nurses, especially in the maternity ward wtf?! I swear I felt like they were targeting me for some reason, they were acting like I stole their HS sweetheart lmao it was like nothing I've ever experienced in my life. Im not discounting that this probably happens to WOC more but I'm white and I really think this must be a pretty common thing for women all around after watching this video and reading these comments. WTF is going on guys?! This needs to be talked about and in the spotlight more, this is infuriating 😡 Brittany your baby is gorgeous!! So sorry you were subjected to all of this. I swore I would never give birth again but my second birth was like a dream, I think because I went in knowing what might happen and deciding that I wasn't gonna take any shit this time. The first time is such a whirlwind that you're questioning if it's even really happening or you're being paranoid, that's how they get away with it. Thankfully my second time I had the best nurse and my labor went so smoothly, in large part thanks to her making me feel relaxed enough to do what I came there to do. Britney hang in there. These traumatic births are so hard especially when your hormones are all over from pregnancy and delivery. Just being honest it will probably be a long time until you are able to move past the emotional trauma you experienced from the birth. I had two c-sections and with my first he was taken away from me for four hours. With my second I lost so much blood and almost needed a transfusion but refused it. My daughter also had heart defects and was transferred to a children’s hospital within 24 hrs. It’s such a hard time especially when your expectations and dream of a blissful birth doesn’t happen. She’s here now and beautiful and one day your babies will be 13 and 10 like mine and you will have forgotten about the trauma to where it’s no longer raw and so painful as now🙏🏻

I’ve even seen textbooks claiming that Black people have thicker skin/don’t feel pain the same which has been scientifically proven to not be true. Mama Doctor Jones did a great video on this a while back
@ASmith-jn7kf
@ASmith-jn7kf 2 жыл бұрын
What modern textbooks have you seen with that in it?? In a hospital, all women are offered and pushed to have the epidural there is no other effective pain management so if that doesn't work then there's nothing else. She got the epidural four times, she was not mistreated or not believed at all. What she was was indoctrinated to believe she would be mistreated and even when she was not she believed she was. I have had five births, five children. The statistics do not give reasons, that's not how they work. Bringing up these from slavery and from the way way past is not relevant. You don't know why those disparities exist and in general pain management in hospitals is poor. After having babies they offer only certain medications to everyone, if those don't work maybe they would give you something more but the meds were not effective for me and I didn't realize it until my fourth. With my fifth I brought my own herbs. It's not as black and white as you think and unfortunately most of you are so ignorant, brainwashed, paranoid and inexperienced that you truly don't know what you are talking about and you don't listen to anyone who does. All races have been ignored by medical doctors, most women of all colors have horror stories about how they are treated. Look at the beginning of obstetric history in white hospitals, it was horrible. This is not an issue of color but one of gender. All of us women are at risk, all of us women can be horribly abused and mistreated and unheard at a very crucial and sensitive time in our lives. This issue very serious and it being made to only be about black women takes away from the real problem of the way women are treated in obstetrics.

It's probably not racism, it's just insensitive. My auntie (bi racial) went though the same thing with black nurses, some just don't actually emphasize or care, just there to get the baby out and bounce. Especialy since many are dealing with multiple patients, especially if it's in a full hospital.

@@trevnti maybe or maybe not in isolated cases. But racial bias in medicine has been thoroughly researched and even dated back to when female slaves were subjected to experiments because “black women don’t feel pain”. Even now, there are doctors that have admitted in medical journals that they think or have thought their black female patients were exaggerating pain. Of course there’s insensitivity but the racial disparity factor is there.

@@unsolicitedopinions7769 Racial bias exists, but it's not everywhere. That's all i'm saying when so many people claim it's racism when Britney could pretty easily pass for white. Medicine until recently has been experimental and not only blacks were subjected to it. They use to use chainsaws on women to cut their pelvis open etc. I just like to view things in more rounded vs everything is racially based. If we ignore that many people in this field are just insensitive & just deem all as racist then nothing gets solved.

I will never understand why they break the water so often. the bladder with the water inside is there for a reason and breaks from alone at the right moment (which is when the head comes out it can be opened or after the baby dived out inside of it and surrounded by it it can be opened. seriously, like cats do often. the baby floats much easier out if still surrounded by it.) this way of unnecessarily breaking it, it just sets an unusual shock to the body. and: It makes the birth way more painful. I read nurses and doctors do that in general to get the birth done faster, because like this the hospital saves time and money, if it's over faster. not caring how much more painful it is for the mother. and in many cases it leads to this, way more trauma than necessary. there's - as far as I know - no other motive or reason behind breaking the water than speeding up the process for the staff. and if it often leads to 2 day labour and C-section - which the hospital gets way more money for.. this makes it all suspicious and not trustworthy. how is it legal they don't have to at least explain what breaking the water entails and get proper consent for that? there need to be better laws to improve this issue. it's way too common and shady.

I’m so sorry this happened to you, Britney. I was tearing up as you spoke. Hope that you are able to find healing🙏🏾. Medical racism / negligence is a serious issue, and am glad that policies are being put in place with new administration to prevent similar birthing experiences. Nonetheless, sending love & light to you and baby Gia !✨💖
