In this video I talk about how my thinking has changed in relation to my Hultafors Classic Axe modifications I made just over 12 months ago.
I also refer to the work that Paul Dore Bushcraft did on my axe mask, you can find out more about Paul's work in his Etsy store here

Nice video, I rapped paracord around the handle and soaked It several times in boiled linseed oil, that works perfect, It makes the paracord real hard and water resistend and is very good for the wood

Sometime down the line after recording this video, I would advise against undertaking such a similar action as it can hide any damage that has been sustained to that part of the handle.

Try ranger bands (cut up sections of bicycle inner tubes). Overlap two and they will stay in place. It may not look traditional, but it will protect the handle/haft.

Thanks for the tip Scott, it's much appreciated. I've had zero handle protection for quite some time and it seems to be holding up well.... so far...

I have wrapped mine with waxed paracord and that has worked very well. It isn't necessary but a little added protection is never a bad thing. I also find it comfortable when choking up on the axe. In the video the cord you are using doesnt look like paracord?

Hi there and thanks for sharing your insights and experience. The cordage was indeed paracord. Thanks for watching 👍

Nice vid You will split the axe mask when you hammer on the axe pole with the axe mask on The pressure of the blow forces the cutting edge into the mask and eventually splits it.

Rather than super glue why not epoxy glue/resin, often used for knife scales, including wooden ones so I guess not too bad for the wood.

Andy Roberts Hi Andy, a good point. I guess some glues/chemicals are clearly designed for use on wood. I wonder how cleanly it could be removed though if it needed to be? Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment it's really appreciated 👍

I had a hatchet with a similar mask. When I used it for hammering, as you described, the mask threads ripped apart. It was probably a problem with the material used for the treads, but it's a potential issue you might want to be aware of if you are going to use a masked axe for hammering.

Hi Ken, it's good to hear from you I hope you're keeping well? As I'm beginning to feel more comfortable with my axe skills I'm constantly looking for ways I can utilise it and of course, the weight and shape of the head makes for a perfect mallet - hence me being keen to use a mask that allows for that whilst keeping me safe too!

Just be careful, because the mask may fall apart as you are hammering. That's what happened to me. Hopefully, my experience was due to low-quality thread, and not a common occurance.

You never use a mask or a cover of any type while hammering with an axe. The inertial force will tear anything apart. Sorry but this is rule # 1. If you're afraid of the cutting edge of the blade, use a regular hammer.

Using cordage (or whatever) is not a good idea anyway. It could mask a damage like deep crack and it may become dangerous if you can't see it.

It isn't advised to use your axe as a 🔨 but the cover is nice

Or just let it be.. I have used different large and small axes for years, and never had a problem w it breaking there.
