I carry a 24 inch council tool Hudson Bay. And I have put a Scandi grind on it and thin the handle down. Sometimes I’ll carry you 21 inch flying fox with a Scandi.

The axe head isn't treated. I don't know if any other commenter has mentioned this, but the black substance all over the head is actually a skin from the forging process. Depending on the process, it can be highly carbonised steel or in some forges it can be iron, due to the high temperature releasing the carbon atoms from their bond to the iron. Thus instead if stereo the skin can be iron. in your case it's likely highly carbonised scale from its manufacture. And yes. It does help to protect the steel beneath.
@DarkZtorm7 жыл бұрын
You are kind of right, after the forge the head is just dipped in some thin not so very glossy lacquering for protection and bringing out the natural beauty of the steel more. I should know because I am the one doing it at the "factory" in Sweden ;).

I've had my hultafors classic hunting axe for 2 years now. absolutely love it!! I treat the handle with l.seed oil & its still in perfect condition.

I have now had mine for 22 years and still in mint condition,used it alot. I like the hultafors steel better then the Granfors bruk.Think it gets sharper and holds the edge better.

Thanks for this, I think this will be my choice for taking away on my sailboat for those occasions when processing wood becomes necessary.

Nice axe, the head is actually 850 grams heavy which is a bit short of two pounds. 1.87 pounds actually.
@mfarrell1234565 жыл бұрын
The makers of the axe recommend turning the handle as the axe head hits the wood. This will split it without going all the way to the large stump and dulling the edge.
@fireantsarestrange8 жыл бұрын
I have a that same axe.. Just a suggestion. You can rub a bees wax candle on the handle and it seals the hickory from rain or wet or humidity... whatever. And the wax helps your grip. It does darken the wood. but you will not be disappointed. I live in Florida where it rains all the time. I don't worry when i just drop that expensive thing down in the wet. I will try to upload a video of my Axe. The polish on the blade goes away. You have to sharpen it and when you do you leave marks. When they leave the factory they have been polished with a bench wheel. Don't matter. Its still sharp.

Say Heah, I got my 17" Hultafors Bruks Agdor Hatchet, I bought mine on closeout because they dropped the Range for a newer Range I think the Classic. The older Range are European Style, The Classic Range is more Scandinavian. But the steel is still top shelf. Mine is also a 1 3/4 lbs. But a little more compact than hours. But besides I already had the G. B. Small Forest Axe in the same size as your Hults. and the head is a little lighter too. I guess that's why they cost more. But I got a Axe Hoster to carry mine in, I bought the holster from a KZbinr, just search Axe Hokster, It's a excellent quality leather so I can carry it on person with NY belt knife and even my Wicked Tough Saw so all I need is a Haversack fir my other 5C's. And everything else is on me and very easy to carry. It's not the lightest carry, but very managable, But I could just about handle any situation that comes NY way when I'm going with this trio. Yeah, my 17" Agdor Hatchet is one if my Fav's. I usually team it with my Rodent 5 and my Wicked Tough Saw. I just bought a new British Issue Army Clasp Knife that has a Marlin Spike to untangle paracord, I also like the can opener on it fir my pork and beanZ when I fire up a couple of hot figs and a cup of coffee when I go out on my afterniin deliggt. It doesn't get any better. Congrats on your Hults Hatchet. You got yourself a good one. I really like it. But I also have a 2lbs. head on my Council 24" Pack Axe which I used in my cold weather trips, So I'm running my lighter gear for my up coming trips, I also took both of my Bushcrafters, my Blind Horse and my Benchmade #162. I'm also making sure my 2Hawks Double Bit Hatchet abd my three sharp edged Tomahawk that I'll be taking out with my Bushcrafters and my Bravo 1's. I also sometimes take my ling knives when the brambles need ckeared to get to where I'm going to relax. Thanx fir sharing.,,.

@Alex-uy7pc7 жыл бұрын
sorry, but I'm gonna nitpick here. that's a pretty dangerous way to split wood if you're using a 20" axe. just say you missed the log, that axe would be coming for your leg. if you wanted to split wood standing, then you should get a bigger stump, and put the wood as close to the far edge as possible. that way if you miss you would just hit the stumo
@robpelton7 жыл бұрын
Alex Wrench great point. Thanks for the tip. Good thing I wasn't just chopping with all out force! Thanks for watching!
@Alex-uy7pc7 жыл бұрын
rpelton1 sorry wasn't trying to be too critical of ya, and I wasn't really worried about your safety as I'm sure you've swung an axe more then once. I was more worried about the guy at home that is just starting to use an axe, and thinks they can treat it like a full size. the first time I saw a guy kneeling and splitting wood by holding it against the axe head and swinging them together striking a log I laughed. I thought he looked rediclous, then I scraped the leather off my steel toes with a 24" axe and realized how smart that guy actually was.

Is it necessary to treat with something like boiled linseed oil?
@robpelton8 жыл бұрын
It's not vital in my opinion, but I think it really helps protect the wood and makes it look fantastic. Yes, I use boiled linseed oil. Thanks for watching!

Raw linseed oil pinetar mix 3:1 best handle treatment. My Granpaw taught me 1 day turpentine raw linseed oil 1:1. 3 days straight raw linseed oil. 3 days raw linseed oil pinetar 3:1. Then once a week with the pinetar linseed mix for a month, then once a month for a year, then once a year for the life of the handle. I have noticed no significant difference in using the tutp/linseed and straight linseed for the first 2 steps, so I just do the pinetar linseed mix for all the steps.

Chris Venter the blade on the Husqvarna carpenters axe is less curved, it's really designed for rough carpentery. where as this is more of a multi purpose/hunters axe
@MrJCP284 жыл бұрын
@@Alex-uy7pc pretty sure he is referring to the forest axe by husqvarna not the carpenters axe.

this is 1095 high carbon right?
@DepthWave8 жыл бұрын
more like 1055 with a differential temper. 1095 is too brittle to make a whole axe out of. if you were laminating the bit in, 1095 would be okay though. you don't want much more carbon than 1075 has for an axe.

There is a dark grain below the head. It’s performed very well so far. No issues. Thanks for watching!
@RendColt5 жыл бұрын
I don't like it that sharp. Blade sticks in wood. When it's duller it strikes the wood as much as it cuts it so you retract easier for next strike
@robpelton5 жыл бұрын
I haven’t much of a sticking issue with this axe. A larger felling axe I can see that. Especially when big heavy strikes are being used. Thanks for watching!
@RendColt5 жыл бұрын
Oh yeah. The sticking issue is mostly on big axes. I love my hatchets to be rather sharp

Didn't you notice that the top of the handle is split in two places??? There also appears to have a long slice down the top of the handle. I'm not a big fan of the instructions stamped on the handle. That just cheapens the beauty. If people can't read the manual and/or figure out what not to do, they have no business picking one up in the first place.

I have one, other model Agdor. smaller than yours. As far as I know these are not hand forged. not even forged but kinda casting. Ps from your words and your actions I understand you have zero skills and zero experience about hunting and bushcraft. it’s not a crime. you may get the best some day.
