I was 14/15 when My Immortal was going on (I had JUST stopped writing HP fanfic at that age), and I remember all of us making fun of it and laughing at it in the years after. But now I have a total unironic love for that dumb fic. No other piece of media has such niche early-to-mid-2000s teen energy - Harry Potter, emos VS preps, Good Charlotte, My Chemical Romance, Hilary Duff, vampires, Hot Topic, the fact that it was published on Fanfiction dot net. I also love how the author on the outside is just as much a part of the story as the fictional characters within it, like Lemony Snicket in A Series of Unfortunate Events. I'm not saying it's good by any means (that's not why I like it). I just love the cringy nostalgic feeling it gives me.
