Wow this was a great in-depth breakdown on what good editing is like! Learned so much from Derek in such a short time. Goes to show how having someone critique your work can improve it so much. Even if it can be a little nerve-racking.

The "clearest shot" that Derek mentioned was the first thing in the trailer to excite me about the game when I first watched it. It's so basic but there truly is something about collecting gold in an atmospheric environment that makes the brain go "yeah, that looks fun." And for the record, I have played the first difficulty and really enjoyed it! Can't wait to get back into it when I have some extra time!

It's incredible seeing all those tips being applied and I think it really payed off. The trailer seems to sum up what the game is like beautifully and in short time.
@RealPeoplePersonАй бұрын
I like your narration as it allows the game to be explained in more detail in this short trailer. Since we can upload more than one trailer on Steam, I've been toying with the idea of having a short and snappy 30 second trailer as the first one, and a much longer second trailer that's more or less a Let's Play video with my commentary; the idea being some users prefer watching people play the game in order to make a purchasing decision. No idea if anyone has tried it already.

That's amazing man! You really took his points to heart and crafted an amazing final product. I think it's the mark of true skill when someone can take constructive feedback and actually grow from it, and here you demonstrate an absolute masterclass. It gave me chills watching the final edit because the clarity of your messaging, pacing of the cuts, and audio-visual pairing choices were incredibly well done!

I think game trailers should tell like, a mini story, showcasing what is in store for people when they play the game and also leave some mysteries for the players to unravel themselves

Aww i'm always feel so honored when you mention Dome Keeper (René here, i made that one)! I feared the edit would cut the mention out, but i think it was the right decision, so the trailer really focusses on your game. It can stand on its own very well. Best of luck too, i'll play a round of Feed the Deep now :D
@lukemuscat2 ай бұрын
Hey René! Thank you for the AMAZING game :D Yeah, I really wringed my hands about removing it in the edit, because it is obviously such a big touchstone. I ended up deciding to proudly acknowledge Dome Keeper (and Spelunky) as an influence in both the store page and the game credit screen instead. And thanks for the kind words, I hope you enjoy playing!

Great work man! The only thing I thought about in the improved trailer is the “… PLAYERS to find in the game” line. I think a more powerful approach would be to use “you” instead of the “players”, making the viewers part of the experience, and not giving the feeling of “them” (players who bought the game, and are able to play it and experience it). Love watching indie game devs on their journey, hopefully I’ll become one some day too. Good luck with this, and all the future projects!

New trailer is 20x better, but you still have a big problem, and it’s the same problem you’ve always had. You just haven’t shown me why this game is FUN. I get what you DO in the game (more or less) but why is doing that something I want to do? This is where I think you’re struggling in terms of communication. Like, I don’t even know if the fun of the game derives from puzzle solving, skill mechanics, story or exploration.

The way you talk about your game in the trailer is the perhaps more contemporary style of breaking the fourth wall intently and immediately and not trying to sell the illusion of the world you've created. You say it's "procedurally generated caves". That makes it feel like just a game. Not a place. How were the caves formed in the lore of the actual game? I think that would be more interesting.

I feel like your trailer focuses too much on the 'solo indie dev' narrative. As a gamer, I don’t care about the identity of an unknown indie dev-I buy a game for the game itself. You should sell your game based on its merits, not through your personal story. Mentioning past work or saying you were inspired by other games doesn't add value. We can already see it's similar to Domekeeper, which I enjoyed, and that's what makes me consider your game. Also, please remove the 'a game by Luke Muscat' bit-it feels amateurish. No one remembers or cares about that. Instead, show the game’s logo or a memorable image so we can associate it with the game. I won’t remember Luke Muscat, but I might remember the game if its name and visuals were emphasized at the end of the trailer.

0:25 The trailer WAS really good, but it completely lied about what the game actually was like. You expect the game to be focused on those voxel interactions, when in reality it is not at all. The trailer made it seem like the game was relaxed and a more linear type of game, which it's not. Noita is simply WAY to aggressive with its enemies and challenging for it's best aspects to really shine in an average playthrough, and Im still disappointed to this day about how much the trailer mislead me. I was so excited for the game coming up to release and then the game was NOWHERE near the trailer at all
