Hey, I saw someone recommend getting candy man to eat Japanese candy and just wanted to recommend getting Mushroom mountain on the episode if u can, it's like mushroom looking cookies with chocolate heads. Also the ramen/shushi man would be cool and less awkward.

If you wanna get into japanese cinema, I'd recommend the filmography of either Takeshi Kitano (Hanabi, Sonatine, ...) or Kore-eda Hirokazu (Nobody Knows, Shoplifters, ...). Both of them made movies filled with emotions and are good pictures of the modern japanese society, with style and point of view you really can't find anywhere else. It's also relatively easy to access in the West since they made some waves in famous festivals.

Regarding your use of the word "superficial" at around 2:40, I hope you don't think that just because it may not be as ravenous as some people can be, that your appreciation for Japanese culture and art isn't as legitimate or valid as the next person's. Seems like you were just trying to make it clear that you're not an expert - which is of course fine - but yeah, your love of it is just as real as anyone else's. And you're a man of taste from what I can see too!

I lived in South Korea in 1978-79 when I was in the army. I fell in love with the people in the little village outside Camp Humphreys main gate. They have picnics by their relatives' graves and sit food on the mound for them. The artistry and originality were so refreshing, but the poverty I saw in this little village and the death rate for children was heartwrenching. Thank you for your originality and artistry. So much fun.

I love how well spoken and self critical you're about your interests. The fact that you understand it's still rather "superficial" despite having been interested in it for awhile already. I also like to think that way. If you're reading here's some obvious and less obvious recommendations of Japanese movies. Directors: Akira Kurosawa, Kiyoshi Kurosawa, Imamura, Ozu, Miike, Koreeda and Mizoguchi. Then individual films: Funeral Parade of Roses (experimental LGBTQ masterpiece), Onibaba (horror), Woman in the Dunes and The Face of Another (better go in blind), Harakiri (Kobayashi in general actually).

Idk about u but i find anime touches on topics otherwise not seen so much in American cartoons. Such as suicide, loss of a parent, bullying, growing pains, etc. The way they bring up these kinda of topics and just the way they give u a different perspective on such things is why ive always been drawn to anime over conventional cartoons. I hope you keep exploring it! On a lighter note i find the jokes really slap as well. Haha

Fun fact: Sticking your chopsticks vertical in a bowl of rice is bad in Japan. Called tsukitate-bashi (突き立て箸), it is incredibly taboo because it reminds Japanese people of funerals, where a bowl of rice is left with two chopsticks standing vertically in the center. It's also supposed to bring bad luck

Also if you do like Gundam anime/manga, I would highly recommend Gurren Lagann. It has got to be, in my opinion, the greatest anime experience I have ever had.

ER, I suggest you watch the movie Adrift in Tokyo. It shows a pretty realistic take on the atmosphere of the city. It is a walk film and the writing is pretty good

Cool vid, ER! I have very, very little familiarity with anime and manga, but I am a fan of Hayao Miyazaki's, Akira Kurosawa's, Takashi Miike's, and Junji Ito's stuff.

Rift, if there’s one japanese movie you have to watch it’s Seven Samurai, it’s often lauded as the greatest japanese film ever made and I’m inclined to agree.

I know im late but if you really want to go into classic japanese Cinema look into Kurosawa, Ozu and Mizoguchi. Kurosawa is going to have probably the most western films, while Ozu is going to have the least western and most "art house" feel. Some jump off points: Seven Samari (Long but good) Yojimbo Ugetsu Tokyo Story
