If you wanna get into japanese cinema, I'd recommend the filmography of either Takeshi Kitano (Hanabi, Sonatine, ...) or Kore-eda Hirokazu (Nobody Knows, Shoplifters, ...). Both of them made movies filled with emotions and are good pictures of the modern japanese society, with style and point of view you really can't find anywhere else. It's also relatively easy to access in the West since they made some waves in famous festivals.

Regarding your use of the word "superficial" at around 2:40, I hope you don't think that just because it may not be as ravenous as some people can be, that your appreciation for Japanese culture and art isn't as legitimate or valid as the next person's. I love how well spoken and self critical you're about your interests. The fact that you understand it's still rather "superficial" despite having been interested in it for awhile already. I also like to think that way. If you're reading here's some obvious and less obvious recommendations of Japanese movies. Directors: Akira Kurosawa, Kiyoshi Kurosawa, Imamura, Ozu, Miike, Koreeda and Mizoguchi. Then individual films: Funeral Parade of Roses (experimental LGBTQ masterpiece), Onibaba (horror), Woman in the Dunes and The Face of Another (better go in blind), Harakiri (Kobayashi in general actually).

Idk about u but i find anime touches on topics otherwise not seen so much in American cartoons. Such as suicide, loss of a parent, bullying, growing pains, etc. The way they bring up these kinda of topics and just the way they give u a different perspective on such things is why ive always been drawn to anime over conventional cartoons. Fun fact: Sticking your chopsticks vertical in a bowl of rice is bad in Japan. It's also supposed to bring bad luck
