Yo! Thank you so much for allowing us into your setup methodology. I love your honesty and energy. I’ve got a few keys that I am trying to learn, not quite as advanced as yours. I need to put my MODX 6 back in my setup to try that MIDI tempo. Give Roland Fantom, or Fantom 07,8 a honest look, when you can. I like the richness of Roland Zen Core over Yamaha MODX engines. The Waldorf Iridium, and HydraSynth have really powerful engines and presets as well. I’ve got the PolyBrute 6 and really love it, but the ribbon on the HydraSynth is way more responsive, and creative than the PolyBrute 6. I haven’t tried the PolyBrute 12 yet, and won’t be able to add it to my setup for a few years. Thanks again for being so honest and real!

Thanks for the kind words! Yeah I really want to try a HydraSynth...and I've thought before about swapping the Yamaha out for some other workstation. The sounds are ok, but just ok.

Question: Prior to a "live" show how many hours of run through do you typically go through with the band and singers? I sure hope "Montage" have you on their Christmas List!! How much do you rely on a "click Track?"
@tommymandel2 ай бұрын
Sam, have you ever had a problem (like I repeatedly had Summer '22 and Summer 23 with DIre Straits Legacy) of getting a Montage provided with the wrong OS, and it not being able to load your .X7A (all files) Backup from your USB stick? There were a few times when I tried to do the firmware update to the rental unit so that the .X7A patch would load, but that rarely worked. Maybe the USB stick too big? Any ideas? Thanks for another great video, best of luck. I'm gonna check out the PolyBrute thanks to you. (another keyboard!?? oh no!)

Thanks great setup. I was wondering do you have power conditioners or have you every had a voltage spike that turned off the keyboards for a second leaving you to set up the sounds again?
@SamGutman2 ай бұрын
So that is tech/crew side of things, which I don't have a hand in. I assume they are doing something to make sure the onstage power is safe and even. Although now that I think of it I have definitely seen weird things happen. A week ago at our show in Wales, the entire stage lost power twice! And one time at a show in Philadelphia there was some weird power surge onstage that fried the power supply in my Sequential Prophet X. I had to order a replacement from the company and figure out how to swap it in.
@raykane20632 ай бұрын
@@SamGutman That's good you have a tech/crew handling that stuff it's a lot that goes into from what I have read. That must have been a big surge to get through the line conditioners to affect the Prophet X. Thanks for sharing your amazing journey it's so exciting to watch and reminds me of when I was a kid reading all the magazines like keyboard with bands like Depeche Mode, U2, Howard Jones, Emerson Lake & Palmer would show their keyboard rigs. Thank you for continuing the tradition & I wish you even more success and happiness.

Thanks for sharing. 1. Do you travel with the gear everywhere or get gear when you arrive? The line in the segment on if you had to choose just 1 board made it sound like it depends where you are in terms of what is available. 2. I noticed another keyboard player to your left. Are you two in sync, or doing your own thing to add to the performance? Sorry for the newb questions. Appreciate the behind the scenes!
@SamGutman2 ай бұрын
Hi! I don't travel with my own gear, it gets rented for the show, or in this case for the tour. Yep there are multiple keyboard players in the band and we definitely have to make sure that what we are playing works together. It's like a little keyboard orchestra.
@russ2542 ай бұрын
love to hear about how the keys players work together!
@AnthonyHigham2 ай бұрын
The velocity triggering different samples is very powerful and you could do a lot of cool things. Maybe change the vowel based on the velocity or have a switch or pedal to change the vowel or timbre and velocity to change the dynamics of the sample
@SamGutman2 ай бұрын
changing vowel based on velocity would be very doable. The pedal thing I'm not so sure. What program or plugin would you use to put that together?
@AnthonyHigham2 ай бұрын
Does the logic plugin have the ability to map a midi trigger switch to different bank of samples? If so that could work. Otherwise you might need another orchestral plugin? Kontakt or similar? I’m also curious. I’m sure someone here might have a better solution. I used to do everything on a piano roll and if say I was writing out a string line and needed to switch between different articulations, usually a super low key on the keyboard would switch the samples to pizz or marcato or legato, etc.

Favor: When you have a chance can you list your gear? Wow. So neat.
@SamGutman2 ай бұрын
Yep! For this tour it's Yamaha Montage 7 (wish it was the M), Sequential Prophet 6 (which for some reason ever since the London show has fallen out of tune consistently and I have it set to 40 cents sharp in the global settings), Mellotron M4000D, and Arturia Polybrute 12. I might try to add a Chase Bliss Generation Loss pedal to the mellotron.

Hey man. Could you please show how you save your patches on a hard drive?
@magnumopus94112 ай бұрын
on montage*
@SamGutman2 ай бұрын
@@magnumopus9411 Maybe I'll do a video on that at some point, but it's pretty simple. Basically after inserting the thumb drive into the Montage, I push Utility, and then save the User file to the drive. The User file is a copy of ALL the keyboard settings and patches, rather then just one specific bank or patch. But one thing to know is that user files saved on a Montage M will not open on a Montage 7, and visa versa. Although a file saved on the ModX will open on the Montage.

That's a really cool walk-through and set up using the Montage as your midi brain. But, none of them sounded really good for some reason, even in the live shots for some reason. ....For some reason. Playing live and hitting the modulation pitch Bend on the P6 in that one shot, you walked all over the other notes and it was terrible.🤐
