9:39 As a rule of thumb, light infantry > line infantry, skirmishers > light infantry, and line infantry > skirmishers. Its a slightly complicated thing to explain but that's just the basic combat triangle in NTW.

Light infantry will usually win against light infantry because of better range, ability to crouch, and are able to fire from all ranks. They usually match line infantry in accuracy and reload but there are exceptions. Skirmishers will usually win against light infantry because of better range and accuracy. Light infantry have less men than line infantry so a good initial barrage of shots can wipe out a better chunk of units. If light infantry threaten you, you can always retreat or have support. Line infantry usually win against skirmishers because of better reload and accuracy but also because of numbers. Skirmishers will almost always have to run away unless they're in a position that line infantry can't reach, but in every other case they'll get out damaged.

1. I wish I was able to watch The Old Chads dominate that flank in real time. Had no idea they did that much. 2. My cannons did way more than I gave them credit for, as did your Swiss. 3. Watching the icons of my cav in the background during the "sneaky charge" at 25:44 until they kill the general and arty was the icing on the cake; I just had the Jaws tune playing in my head watching them come up.

Old guard has "scares enemies",, which causes enemies to break really quickly. I remember one game just stacking 3 units of old guard in the flank and causing a huge chain route. Good times...

Not too far from truth, really. The requisites were not a joke. You had to have at least 10 years of service and 3 campaigns, having faced fire at front lines (so no cooks for you) and at least 1,78 m talle (something really out of the ordinary for a time when people were shorter than now). You could skip the height requirement if you had the Legion d'Honneur. You know, just the biggest award for bravery in France. No biggie. Some guys at the 1st Regiment of Grenadiers of the Guard (the _Old Guard_ ) had seen some shit. A certain Guard by the name of Stoll, for example, had 22 years of service and 20 campaigns. His rank? _Private_

Actually the reply to the prussians in the British troops was by the old guard commander and the square MERDE! French slang for poo! Sounds more like it these guys didn't you know much not cut to the chase! Some of the units like the heavy cavalry we're all composed of believe it or not a lot of them were of noble decent?! And they weren't even used during Waterloo and a British officer reported how they were still informed ranks on horseback heavy horses and remember these guys are heavy cavalry and I mean heavy, they literally just scared down the British troops and no one made a move on him and just turned around and catered off. And these guys were really no one to mess with!

Small tip apollo, you dont want to trade line infantry for lights/skirmishers. Line infantry will lose a lot to skirmishers and the will lose completely to light infantry in a shooting duel because every light infantry unit/skirmisher model can fire but with line infantry only the front rank shoots. With the way you deployed your fusiliers of the line, you were severely limiting your fire output. You need them in 2 rank deep formation at least. Even then, you will lose to lights.

It depends on whether the line infantry could form a line fast enough without taking too much casualties. If the line infantry 2 ranks deep can form a nice line on skirmisher, skirmisher will evaporate. If skirmisher is in the tree cover or if the skirmisher get a nice kill that cause more than 30% of the line infantry to die first, that line infantry is doomed.

If you like this map try Galician Ria. It's very similar to this, its 3v3 map max, it has plenty of terrain to hide, plenty of open spaces, strategic hills, and its grass/european map without desert penalty. My favorite map.

Juicy Old Guard action , evokes more of mature pron image really , especially with those pron stashes. Need more battle adjectives perhaps pugnacious , belligerent , ardent , vehement , truculent? Oh you got me to install NTW again , such breath of fresh air after forcing myself to finish a 3K and Troy campaign. Biggest change is me actually using the terrain much more as it's only a side note in the later games whereas bad use of it in NTW equals dead army.

YES!! Been watching your videos for about a month, and I thought your channel was so awesome that I wanted to start playing total war as well. I tried playing some shogun 2 since I got it for free earlier this year from steam but I just didn't enjoy it, i saw you describe it as too "fast" and arcadey ("my problem with total war") and agree I grew bored after a couple of campaigns so yesterday I decided to give Napoleon a shot and loved it. awesome to see a Napoleon video so quickly after my decision! thank you Apollo. maybe ill send a video in some day....when I'm not so awful hahaha.

I've always felt more comfortable playing defensively. But when I noticed that I win considerably more when playing all out agro. Move up the cavalry and charge the flanks. Then move up the infantry and hold fire until very close. Then move them up slightly more and ait for them to unleash another salvo. Then charge the enemy while flanking with what cavalry you have left. And always make sure to have one or more units assigned to run down or at least follow routed units so that they can't turn back to aid the rest of the army.

3:25 Fencibles shouldn't really be in the game the way they are - They come from "Defence-ibles", and Fencible regiments were only intended to stay on and defend Britain. Which is why they got less priority with training and supply and can be classed as militia. To my knowledge they never left Britain and never saw combat, like the Home Guard of WW2, or perhaps a colonial territory where they were raised.

I'm pretty sure good light infantry, like Prussian fusiliers and Portuguese cazadores will beat line infantry in a one on one fight. If they are using the spread out formation. Skirmishers (ones with 80 men on large unit scale) will lose to line infantry, but you will need guard units to beat good light infantry.

Aight guys, Imma need your advise regarding napoleon tw. So a friend of mine always includes arty in his line infantry and sits back. everytime i get in the linebattle he is peppering me with canister shots and I can't get him with cav, cause he would form square. Any idea how I can beat this tactic?

Youcan try to go bonsai on him and force a melee to be able to pin his troops to no be able to form square so that you can effectively use your cavalry to either weaken his infantry and then kill his artillery or somehow pin them/distract them enough to actually get your cav in there
