Pentatonix is a very diverse group, and this includes religious beliefs. They are always respectful of their differences. His deep Christian faith is core to Kevin, and PTX gives him these opportunities to express that.

I feel that when Kevin is singing he is not asking a question, as in the previous verses, but is telling Mary in the sweetest way possible that deep in her heart she knows.

Written by Mark Lowry. Great singer/songwriter. But then there's PTX. As for people hating this song, I would think because it's a Christian hymn. Respect a person's belief. Avi sings this song & he's Jewish. 💕

When Pentatonix first started with the Sing Off - Kevin didn’t think he could “sing”. Avi was the one to convince/teach/prove to him that he had an amazing voice! So thankful to Avi for that - a world without ever hearing that beautiful pure tone would be so sad!! ❤🙌🏻 Love your reactions and analysis!! 🎉

I love your "music nerdiness" it really is helpful to learn how they make the songs and the arrangements work for them. That section of repeated "Mary did you know" , the climax, I think really gives you a feeling of a crowd of people gathered around asking Mary if she did know. PTX is really great at making the "story" of the song come alive. The major notes you talk about in that second climax gives my a feeling of urgency or excited questioning. Like "we REALLY want to know" , "Please tell us". Kevin's part was so well placed and the arrangement of the part being given to him to sing was so well done and fitting. And as Mitch sings the high and emphatic "the Great I Am" ,again there couldn't have been a better voice to belt that out. So well arranged. The ending in unison does give you a sense of unresolved, but I think of it more like the people of those days really wouldn't know until 33 or 34 years later when the prophesy of Christ was being carried out and resolved then. Thank you for your assessment and breakdown of this beautifully done song. One of my PTX favorites. Have a Merry Christmas !

Kevin's tone can be so light and innocent sounding it was just perfect for that moment. I think it was his first real solo. Michael Jackson evolution might have been first but this was so effective emotionally..

Pentatonix has recent official videos for some of the new tracks on their 2023 Christmas album, including a mashup of "Christmas Time Is Here" (from the Charlie Brown Christmas) and "Pure Imagination" (from the first Willie Wonka movie).

I love when they have a deceptive cadence. It fit so well with this arrangement. As far as the cave setting, I feel it was set almost in an Easter setting. They are in a dark cave with candles as light. As the light from “outside” grows throughout the song to the ending, it’s like the rock of the cave is being pushed away by the women to find Jesus no longer there. Beautiful symbolism. It may not have been their intent, but that is what I’m going to take away from it and I’m happy with that. Yes I agree, they always have that dangling tension waiting to be resolved. It’s so satisfying when they do that. I’m really glad they really introduced Kevin as the tenor that he truly is. I love watching your videos. Not only are you SO good looking, you are a great teacher that can explain music in a simple way so that people who haven’t had training can understand what you are talking about. Thank you… again!

I wonder if Mark Lowry ever imagined that this song would be covered so many times. I like the simple way the Pentatonix has put this together. Check out Home Free’s first album Full of Cheer. O Holy Night Angels We Have Heard On High Do You Hear What I Here? You won’t be disappointed. And if you want to laugh check out a couple of their other songs on that same album. Merry Christmas Oh and my kids favorite song. I want a hippopotamus for Christmas. Postmodern jukebox has an interesting version of that one.

This was the second PTX song I heard, after Hallelujah, and I was hooked from then on. It’s just majestic, and Kevin’s sweet, sweet voice was a real surprise. They’ve given a similar treatment to O Holy Night (their second arrangement of this hymn, actually) on their Christmas album this year, and a video has just been released if you want to see how current-day Pentatonix blows the roof off. I’m loving the music education, please keep ‘em coming. Peace …

Enjoyed your analysis - thanks for this! I love when a reactor finds something new to help explain how they’ve managed to capture us all so firmly for so long 😊 They do seem to use every tool in their arsenal, from the arrangement through to the video, to form a really cohesive piece of art with each song they do, never straying from the true meaning of the song. Dedicated musicians who work super hard, smart enough to gather the best around them and work as a team, seeing them continue to thrive and grow makes me so happy ❤

Mary knew! We just don’t know how much she knew and when things would be revealed to her. I just can’t imagine God would let her know her first born child would be cruelly sacrificed so young. She obviously learned at some point He could do miracles because she is the one who suggested he change the water to wine at the wedding celebration. He told her He had not come into His time but He did the miracle. So she had to have been told at some point before that that her Son was going to do miracles. Or maybe He was already changing water into wine at home? The Bible doesn’t quite go into that. 😊 Great reaction and I loved your explanations. Very good! I know it’s been said many times, many ways 🥴 quit apologizing for pausing. I learn from you and I love that. I can then share with my grandkids who homeschool and don’t get music classes! This is my 1st time to your channel and I subscribed. I Watch a good number of local coaches and singers who do reactions and I must say I learned so much so much in your reaction here. You bring up things that I've never heard anybody else bring up. Ever does anything unintentional. They Do you have a standard "formula"4 lack of a better word that you See repeatedly in there videos. I don't know if you've reacted to any Superfruit which is a side project Mitch and Scott had earlier on in Pentatonix Career. They do a cover of Katy perry's rise. It was done in reaction to the shooting at the gay night club pulse in Miami. It features 3 of their friends from the LGBTQ+ Community. Brian Justin Crum who most people know from his cover of creep on America's got talent. Mario jose and Mary Lambert. I seem to recall hearing that she has sung with Macklemore And Louis. Superfruit isn't a cappella. In this pc they have Just a piano accompaniment. All of the hallmarks of a pentatonic arrangement you will see in rise. There's also Video titled on you which is Scott and Mario jose. It is L.P. Lyrics on a hands Zimmer track called time from inception. And again you see See the Pentatonix arrangement there. I love joy insights about how the different chords Are used to Express a certain emotion and that the way they arranged ITIT seems that each person represents somebody else Asking the question I knew you would get your moment when they went into the major key. Kevin is a Seventh day adventist. As such Pentatonix does not perform on friday nights. You mentioned pentasuspension. I have what I call PST Which is Pentatonix standard time. You can tell where they are in their career based on either the length of ovi's hair or Mitch's Physical appearance since it's always changing. I have a feeling you would agree with this. What I love most about a cappella is that it is organic. There is no 4th wall so speak. The singers cannot hide behind instruments. So since it's a face to face performance with the audience There Emotions Really come forward. I haven't looked through your catalog yet but if you haven't reacted to their cover of imagine you must. You heard a little bit of the pentatonic wall of sound. In there cover I mean upgrade, of imagine You get the entire wall of sound. Also the way that they have chosen to present the message is so powerful.

The problem is the SONG (specifically the lyrics) not this performance. To Christians who revere the Virgin Mary the suggestion that she might not "know" about how important Jesus would be is sacrilege. She was told so by the Angel Gabriel. Joseph also "knew" these things too.
