I remeber when the controversy with the human desings happened, one of the strongest opinons was about the characters not having normal human skin tones. In retrospect I think it was probably the best decition they could have made. And while I remember liking this movie, I think Rainbow Rocks the second movie is the best of the ones that came out, they lean more on the music, wich in my opinion is one of the franchise's strongest points.

You can definitely enjoy the Equestria Girls movie series without watching the original FiM but you miss out on just a few parallels, like this movie to the first arc of FiM. The best movie of this series is definitely MLP - Equestria Girls: Rainbow Rocks. I hope you check it out! (Oh yeah Brony here, I watched MLP FiM as a kid tho...my fav is Pinkie Pie. Always has been.)

Confessions of a teenage brony here: The show started when I was in high school and by senior year I was hooked. It became my comfort show to watch when I was first away at college. A friend and I even went to see EQ in theaters. And yes, two teenagers in a packed theater of small children and their parents does feel awkward

I grew up on MLP, though not originally this one. This show/string of movies is actually Gen 4. As a kid, I grew up on Gen 3 MLP with movie specials such as "A Very Minty Christmas" and "Princess Promenade." When I first saw this series, it was kind of weird because there were new characters but then also the same characters but different. For example, the Pinkie Pie I grew up with wasn't bouncing off the walls but was a critical thinker who was down to earth, everyone went to for advice and she adored the color pink. Still though, I watched the entirety of this show and most of the Equestria Girls movies. I'd suggest you watch my personal favorite of the movies (Legend of Everfree. The music is AMAZING!), but there's two movies in between it and it's hard to watch it without that context. Ironically, you say you like how they all sound different. The irony there is that some of them actually have the same voice actor. The VA for Applejack is the same for Rainbow Dash. The VA for Fluttershy is the same for Pinkie Pie. Rarity and Twilight, on the other hand, have VAs of their own. (Though the VA for Rarity also voices Princess Luna, I believe.)

In answer to how it might seem odd how Sunset could flick her moral switch that fast after being blasted by the Rainbow Laser of Death, there's something to keep in mind. When she forced her exposure to magic with the crown, she turned into a demon with no qualms about ending Twilight’s life. The sudden exposure to magic magnified her negative emotions, which then manifested into her demon form, however, ALL the negative aspects were magnified, which is why her brilliant intellect took a back-seat regarding using teenagers for an army. Her ambitions, now being influenced by a magnified negative energy, took over logic. The same applies to her choosing to try ending Twilight. Before, she made it clear she wasn't planning on actually hurting Spike. Those were her good qualities still leaking through. After she was exposed to magic magnified negative energy, however, her most negative traits were magnified too. When the Elements blasted her, all that magnified negative energy went too, leaving Sunset with her positive traits and an open mind as to exactly what had happened.

OG FiM fan here. I saw a lot of worried buzz around the very idea of this movie back when it was first announced. It certainly didn't help that series creator Lauren Faust openly said that she wasn't fond of the concept. But, it wound up getting its fans and even getting a breakout character with Sunset. So yeah, it had its ups and downs 😊

Correction #1 (1:03) - The "My Little Pony" series started in 1981, and "Friendship is Magic" is 4th installment of MLP, that EQG is a spin-off of. And yes, it is now considered the main show. Correction #2 (4:50) - Actually, teleportation spells are pretty hard, and only super gifted and powerful unicorns are able to teleport. Back then we've only seen unicorn Twilight being able to teleport, and with a lot of effort. So it was very huge for the fans to see another unicorn to have so much power. Correction #3 (5:09) - Ponies' mane does that when they have a lot of power within them. Like, unimaginable amount of magic. Fun fact (7:55) - There was a time in the future when Sunset was about to say the same word, but because it's a "kids series" she said "... you, manipulative b... blowhard!" Fun fact (14:10) - Yeeeahh... Even Sunset later realizes how ridiculous that plan was. Seriously, her reaction in Rainbow Rocks and Mirror Magic is pretty similar to yours, but with no laughing. Correction #4 (14:25) - Magical corruption is a complicated experience, and if we go deeper to that, it's gonna make more sense why Sunset switched personalities so fast. First of all, it's not like she was born evil (unlike King Sombra). She was initially an ambitious student who had the potential to be a great person, but never let friendship into her heart. We've never heard about her parents, so it's most likely that she grew up feeling lonely and only cared about herself up until this point. She did grow more cruel over time, but the demon transformation made her come back to her senses. After coming this close to her goal and realizing it's not what she wanted, and now everyone hates her, Sunset felt like her whole life was over. That's why that moment when Twilight gave her a second chance meant everything to Sunset. You should really listen to "My Past is Not Today" to understand Sunset's inner state better. And I REALLY recommend you keep watching the EQG movies. The first one was extremely weak and flawed compared to the main show and the other movies when it comes to... completely everything, but if you enjoyed this one even a bit, you are definitely gonna like the others and you are gonna love Rainbow Rocks!

The other eq girls movies are MUCH BETTER tho. The songs, the characters, THE ANIMATION. Everything just gets progressively better and better. The first one is kinda generic and boring, but the second and the third one OMG!!! I don’t even like the songs that much in the first movie, so if you like them in this one you sure will LOVE them in the other movies. So yeah, I recommend watching the other movies, especially considering the fact, that you don’t need to have any knowledge of the show to enjoy the rest of the eq girls movies. Btw the friendship games is my favourite one, so looking forward to hearing your opinion!!

5:55 This is not a correction, just a comment Celestia specifically says that she's the only one who can cross that portal, because if some pony else does, it would create some sort of unbalance in the universe or something hoof knows. However, many years later, Sunset shimmer brings all of the students of her school to Equestria, and literally nothing happens, I don't know if it's because something bad can only happen if too many ponies cross the Portal and not the other way around (if too many humans cross the portal) but the rules are already unclear enough as it is

The whole EQG franchise is actually amazing due to Sunset Shimmer's character growth from villain to protagonist. Sunset is easily one of the best and complex former villains of the MLP: FIM franchise and it's a shame EQG never got a final film or finished Sunset's arc completely. The EQG television series somewhat delved into Sunset's past and such, but it would have been nice to have a sweet ending to her story. Also please check out Rainbow Rocks, it's the best one out of the four films, but the third one, Friendship Games is severely underrated and really well done.

I was six years old the summer of 2013 when the first movie came out, and I drove my parents and brothers crazy singing the songs lol I also had long, blonde hair and made my mom make me a human Applejack costume for Halloween that year. Ten years later, I’m not sure I would say it’s “good”, but I still have my dolls and the girls were a huge part of my childhood, so I wouldn’t say it’s “bad” either.

It's really interesting hearing someone's opinion on the franchise based only on the Equestria Girls movie..... As someone who also didn't watched anything related to MLP until relatively recently (i started the show in 2020) i can say that i was skeptical about the quality of the franchise as well... But it surprised like you have no idea (EQG movies included) So.... From someone who is a proud Brony in the current day... I can tell that these movies, but specially the main series... Are definitely worth watching. Also..... My favorite of the Mane 6 is Rarity as well ☺️.
