Session 9 is probably my favorite horror film to come out in the last 20+ years, I was hooked when I first saw it. Perfect filming location, creepy atmosphere, and hearing Mary's story through the recordings just sends chills up the spine. I have the Scream Factory edition and it's one of my top 5 favorite releases from them.

I think the reason this movie was divisive, is that a lot of folks were probably expecting some kind of crazy payoff/reveal at the end with a monster, ghost or something tearing people to pieces. This is an atmospheric and subtle movie that i found to be quite scary. Frankly, i think it is one of the scariest movies that has come out in the last 25 years. That final line spoken from the audio tape at the end was terrifying.

Session 9 is terrific... locations, cast, low budget, editing, sound design, DV camera, script, seemingly innocuous task... My father was an electrical contractor and I used to accompany the sparks on certain jobs as a gopher... man did we see some interesting buildings and I would always duck out and explore... Peter Mullen was excellent also as the not too right in the head guy... And that voice.....Gordon....

Man I’ve watched this movie 4 times and it still does nothing for me. They can wrap it up in the prettiest box set ever made but I still won’t enjoy watching it.

Session 9 is supposedly one of the first theatrically released movies shot on HD digital cameras. This Blu-ray edition by Second Sight is as good as it can get.

The first time I saw Session 9 I was in a very dark place in my life, and it affected me deeply. That reveal at the end had me crying, shaking and chain smoking in my friend’s sunroom just to try and calm down. It hasn’t had the same feeling on subsequent re-watches, but to me it’s still a VERY effective psychological horror film. I would also recommend Brad Anderson’s The Machinist, and his episode of Masters Of Horror ‘Sounds Like’, which might be my favourite episode of that whole series.

Right on the money. Very strange movie. I still don't quite know if I like or not and I've seen 3 or 4 times, but I find myself coming back to it. That's probably it's biggest strength.

I have about the same mindset on Session 9 as you do. I didn't like it at first but I gave it a couple more watches and I like it more now. Also, I did watch the Cemetery Man 4K and I really loved it. Thanks for recommending it and I enjoy watching your videos and look forward to seeing what you will review next.

TOTALLY the same experience for me...i heard about session 9 seeing it on alot of people's "top 20 horror movies of the 2000's" lists and got the blu ray from scream factory thinking i would like it more after seeing it in hi def and i just CANT get into that movie!!! I want to like it but i just can't.

I’ve just resigned myself to the fact that I simply don’t like that movie. The trick as I get older is to realize that’s okay. Not every movie is for everybody. I’m happy for the people who like S9, I wish I was one of them. But hey, I’m not gonna like everything. Brad Anderson is cool though, he had a decent run back in the 00s. He was even a “Master of Horror” one season.

Yeah I expected an in-your-face ghost movie or slasher, but it wasn't that. More a personally haunted and reluctant tragic slasher. Don't love it, don't hate it, I like it. Can't explain why, but it gives me a Silent Hill vibe, maybe the look of the cover and some of the setting, but the somber mood too.

I always felt the same way with this movie, it wasn't really for me. It wasn't bad, but something about it just didn't click for me. And I absolutely love slow burns, like damn, one of my favoirite movies of recent years was Saint Maud. But for some reason, the style of this movie felt pretty dull. Reminded me of all the love for the dark and the wicked, everyone loves it, but I just found it derrivative and bland. One cool sequence with fingers getting cut off, but the rest is just slow moving generic atmospheric shots...Hell, Relic 2020 and Evil Lurks were far better films with "dread" and interesting twists and turns
