Before you continue stripping it, what I suggest is get your new tub in. I've seen plenty of videos where instead of ending up with a pile of parts, you just move the stuff you take off, immediately over to the new tub. I know there are things you have to remove to get to other parts, but it's much easier to remove something, walk 20 feet and bolt it back onto the new tub.

This is a McLaren. These are not Toyota Camrys stamped out by the millions and then disposed of. Jay Leno bought a Mclaren F1 25 years ago for two million dollars. It's one of just sixty four cars made, and today it's worth twenty million dollars. The mic drop? On top of it being an award winning, legendary race car, that car is also made of carbon fiber. These are very rare and extremely well engineered sports cars. The fact that the owner obvious took such significant damage to the car at the speeds the car impacted the divider with no injuries and such little damage to the vehicle is a testament to how well engineered Mclaren builds these cars. Had this been a conventional car built of more commonly used steel or aluminum, the vehicle would have been completely destroyed and the previous owner likely would not have been alive or in condition to take your phone call. That fact alone ought to be one of biggest motivators to restore, not run from this car. Two thirds of the car intact despite hitting a concrete divider at the speed that owner was going? Yet the owner lived to take your call without sustaining any serious injury? A blind man could see this is one hell of an automobile.

Imagine working for months on this and it breaks up on it's first speed run...expensive and dangerous. You can now carry on with a fresh tub knowing that you will end up with less profit, but no worries about what could happen! Looking forward very much to this rebuild as it will be interesting to see how these monnsters are put together. Very best of fortune with it. Best regards, stay safe and well Cheers, Bob in the UK

I pray you'll be able to find a good and mechanically sound resale tub that will give you all the features and benefits of the original 720s for a great price. Cool that the previous owner is contributing to the build. Amazing he walked away from the accident, given the photos show something a lot more serious.

I still find hard to belive that a Carbon fiber tub of a 300K car, being that the main structure of the car, only costs "10k", if you find one for that price you NEED to see it in person first to see if it isn't a scam, but it will be interesting to see how you swap everything to a new tub! Can't wait for that! 😁
@danielnilsson2076
@danielnilsson2076 3 жыл бұрын
not only the tub, won't he also need a new front aluminum sub-frame, possible rear sub-frame, engine sub-frame, a whole lot of suspension parts, every single hydraulic pipe/hose, and then anything that goes on the outside such as door/doors, rims etc? If the carbon tub + front + rear + engine sub-frames and all suspension arms and dampers need to be replaced then it's close to just swapping the engine, gearbox, fuel-tank, electronics and interior into another vehicle - and that will cost a lot since most of the car needs to be replaced then. I prefer metal that can be bent back into shape, welded and verified to be sound due to being way too poor and cheap to take on such a project in a proper manner.. the last time I had to make these kinds of calls was many years ago after another wreck at the race-track on a big-bore motorcycle where I had to scrap most parts of Ohlins front forks, a complete set of forged aluminum wheels, but managed to bend the rear swing-arm straight/re-welded and heat-treated in order to salvage as much as possible.. but that was on a vehicle mostly made from welded aluminum and used almost exclusively on the track.. And it took a few practise-sessions after all was together again before I had convinced myself that the frame, swing-arm, forks etc performed properly before I could start to believe in the complete bike again. It was a huge relief when I could confirm that it behaved as expected when sliding/losing traction at different lean-angels left and right, not being 100% certain that everything would have the expected stiffness in every situation since there is the possibility of some part of the frame having twisted slightly within tolerances but still having altered stiffness in some load situation causing it's dynamic behavior to feel different as compared to before.

I'm glad you're asking for advice on this project. I have an idea for the damaged tub. Build a frame for it like you did on the Mustang and buy the parts you need to make a complete body. Then sell it to Hollywood to wreck in a movie. You can rent them your repaired original for the close up shots . They can wreck a $30,000 car instead of a $350,000 car. Retain ownership in the replica so you can sell the good parts. You can put in any engine if it's not going to be driven on the road. I'm converting a 67 Mustang to V8 power on my channel. So I have a good 6 cylinder Mustang engine, transmission and rear end I'll sell you cheap. Building movie cars is a good business to get into for someone as creative as you are.

After seeing how well the repair of Tavarish's more cosmetic area, right next to/above where that suspension mount is, I'd take a shot at cutting a decent sized window in that same spot, to see if you can access the inside/back side of that mount area. Hell I may be way off, since I'm not seeing it IRL but what can it hurt at this point...

This car just should not be rebuilt!.... I haven't watched this installment yet.. but if he continues to say he's going to use the brake rotor that was attached to the severed front wheel for example he's an idiot!!! I'm sorry that is lethal he has no idea what micro cracks or damage it has, without x-raying and ultrasound examinations!. The diff and gearbox will need replacing due to the lateral load that went into it when the rear wheel slapped the concrete wall... Every component in the front needs replacing, everything... Likely both doors not just one need replacing.. the tub... If he can get a used one that's not damaged and not fit for use otherwise they'll cost over £100k... He's going to have a heart attack when he sees the cost of parts from McLaren... For example a wheel nut is £99 which is what $160 dollars or more... This is a classic example of someone who's out of their depth hasn't got a clue and is trying to dangerously cut corners to save money.

I agree, the damage seems very big, mostly due to cockpit damage. And I think they know it. These videos are mostly done as a marketing and increase the people around the instagram and KZbin channel. People will watch these videos for curiosity, they will earn, they will increase the visibility and maybe they will reach to fix this car, even spending a lot of money. It's a win-win situation. So, vTuned please continue, I'm curious to know what will happen in the next episodes!
@dejavuking
@dejavuking 3 жыл бұрын
@@diesel701ful hey indeed if they can get enough views, as revenue and video sponsors to equal out the loss they will take either rebuilding it or just selling the parts that are salvageable. Then it would indeed be a net gain in terms of YT and IG exposure, bring new viewers in etc... Your 100% correct I totally aggree!. The problem starts if they insist on rebuilding it and put a car back on the roads that is not fully safe to do so and someone gets hurt or killed... Then it'll do the opposite and kill their reputation... So ya the best scenario is sell the salvageable parts, get sponsors, as revenue to break even on the car or lose as least as possible while boosting YT subscribers/IG followers, would be a win!. They would have learnt valuable knowledge on McLaren's, would show their responsible, haven't lost to much money and have gained subs, views etc... So ya aggree it's a win win if they do that!. good point.

I do not understand what this guys doing.. your 100% correct about the used tubs.. plus he needs to replace the diff, the gearbox due to the lateral forces that would have transferred through the drivetrain when the broken rear wheel slapped the concrete wall.. all four brake rotors need replacing.. the front if he tries to use the one that was on the broken off wall that's disgraceful and irresponsible.. meaning the front pair need replacing, can't replace one disk.. the rears need doing as also the damaged rear wheel it's likely the force damaged the disk rotor even micro cracks etc still unusable thus four new brake rotors. The engine may have taken damage too from the lateral forces... The entire front needs replacing everything.. like what is he thinking... I'm not sure if your in England but here that car would not be allowed back on the road no matter how "good" it's rebuilt.

We'll see won't we, when in a few videos he announces the cars to far gone and they are intact scrapping it for parts!.. then who'll have egg on their face it certainly won't be us... Death trap on wheels whether or not it gets rebuilt. Like said in previous comments in England that car would not be allowed back on the roads whether it's rebuilt or not!... Its irresponsible to try and rebuilt that thing... Like I've said all four brake rotors need replacing... Due to the front that was attached to the wheel that left the car being damaged meaning the front pair need replacing and the rear need replacing because the force that went through the rear that slapped the wall!.. if not and the brakes fail and he knocks over and kills a child crossing the road... Great very responsible hey.

Not sure exactly where you are located, but if you are within a decent drive of an Air Force Base, especially one with fighters, there is a composite shop that repairs all types of composites (like carbon fiber). Most of us are all gear heads and fix stuff like this everyday. Carbon fiber cloth is just that, it's the resin and way it's laid that gives it its strength. I'm down here in Florida near Eglin with F35s. They're about $90 million a piece, so trust me, the folks in the shop know what they are doing. Go online and look up the home page of the base, find the maintenance squadron number, call and ask for the composite shop, ask for a guy that is actually doing the repairs, not the supervisor, and just talk to him about what you are trying to do. I just retired from the AF, so I know how it all works, let me know if you need any help...

Wow. Negative much? I've seen V tuned restore cars in way worse shape than this. I highly recommend that you do more research on carbon fiber. Despite your excessively negative take on carbon fiber, this material has the potential to be one of the most revolutionary materials ever developed. It's one fifth the weight of steel, five times as strong, and IMHO easier to work with to fabricate or repair than either steel or aluminum. This material has been in use for more than three decades, but hasn't seen widespread adoption until the last decade due to further refinement of the technology making it more affordable. The primary reason I am such a huge cheerleader on carbon fiber is that I have actively pursued and read every scrap of material I could find on this material. I am far from alone. This material is being increasingly adopted by the auto industry as well as other industries looking to develop a competitive product made from this space age revolutionary material. Don't bury your head in the sand. This isn't Bakelite. This has the potential to be the most revolutionary material developed since the development of rayon during World War II. Kudos to you V-tuned for calling the previous owner and Tavarish.
