The original 1973 Evinrude 85hp needs some attention before mounting it back on the boat. In this video, I show what I did to get the motor back in shape.

Is that the 85593E? I’m trying to get mine running right and I’m about to go crazy. Rebuilt carbs and started a Seafoam treatment. I ran it for 12 or so minutes which it ran fine then shut it off to hot soak. Now it will not start back up. It’s got fuel in the carbs and spark. It’ll turn over if fuel is sprayed into the carbs but just die when it uses that up. Could the jets possibly be clogged or something? I cleaned them really good when rebuilding them but the dang thing just won’t turn over.

I removed the drain plugs and squeezed the bulb and fuel comes out so it’s not an issue with no fuel right? Sorry I’m just really new to this.

Great series! I will be rewatching your videos this winter. I recently purchased a 1980 SE 15 ft tri-hull. It is pretty much identical to yours but my front bench seats are not open for storage. Total restoration is planned to take place over winter. I can't wait to see your boat back on the water.

Great vid in spite of the greased lens.It will be good to see the boat float again. You like to confuse propellers and impellers!!! Your vids helped this old age pensioner to rot repair an 18.5 ft half cabin here in western Canada! CHEERS

A tip for getting the impeller in place: Put a ziptie around it to compress the "blades" a bit, put it into the housing, cut the ziptie and push it down all the way 👍 Always fun to see a new video from you! I'm in the middle of glassing the hull and transom on my 14ft boat. Previous owner didn't seem to care care that the transom was full of water so when I got ahold of the boat the transom had the consistancy and rigidity of mud 😛 So now I've made a new 2" thick birchply transom. Hope it's going to be stiff enough for the 200hp turbodiesel inboard engine I'm in the middle of rebuilding and going to put in 💪

Ziptie trick sounds good, didn't come across that one anywhere or I would have tried it. Thanks for the kind words. That boat and motor you're working on sounds like it is going to be awesome. Thanks for watching and good luck with your boat!

Thanks for your videos man, I just picked up a 76 t-156. I’m going through the same work of stringer/transom replacement.. your videos put me in the right direction.

Sorry bout the lens but thank you for putting in the effort to still put what you did on video. No simple task! Could you share the OMC mechanic channels you've learned from?

I have always placed the impeller into the housing before sliding over the drive shaft. Then your just fighting the offset that is in the housing and the key way.

First off, go buy some flowers and kiss yourself girl for putting up with you workin on your project, something I forget to do often! Secondly, Float adjustment is critical as you stress. OMC/Evinrude/Johnson sells a multi-model tool to check float height but GENERALLY most carburetor floats are adjusted to the float being level with the face of the carb body/float bowl mating surface. I love your project details man, way more than I have for an entire project. I have the detail in the mechanical/electrical side but when it comes to the in hull work/fiberglass work you did .... I am comfortably cutting corners in that area, but safely enough as I plan to keep the HP low on this boat to mainly just fish locally. I appreciate a dude who works the way you do and is diligent in documenting it all. As a forum user in other areas, I know documenting work is motivating (and I’m sure with your collection of videos) presents finishing in a manner other than timely isn’t even an option! Keep up the good work man and forget about the smudge, the progress was still made and that’s all that matters. Bonus on top of that for pushing through the video. When your on the water sipping on a good drink this smudge will be a laughable part of this whole crazy process.

Ha ha, yeah she's a keeper for putting up with me. Thanks for the tip on the multi-model tool, I didn't know that existed. I've always been more into the mechanical and electrical side as well. The fiberglassing wasn't nearly as bad as I expected it to be. But, I don't expect to utilize that skill again any time soon. Good luck with your boat, I hope you are on the water soon. Thanks for watching my videos, I truly appreciate it.

I have a Glastron with a problematic Evinrude. Mechanics are saying they won't touch it because it has so many different problems. It is the same year and model boat that made the jump in the James Bond movie. Any ideas ? I am in Minnesota. Really enjoyed your video !!

How much extra supplies did you have left from glassing? You said you ordered more than you needed. Mainly did you use all mat or 1708 biaxial? How much resin did you have left over? Thanks man about to start the same process
@jmink
@jmink 3 жыл бұрын
I don't know how much total. If I had to guess I have a couple yards or less of .1708 and a few yards of CSM. Also I had one unused flotation foam kit. Good luck on your project, I have enjoyed working on mine.

I would like your insight on something, I’m doing the same exact thing to my boat now. I’d like to glass in a board under the bow so I can install a removable pedestal seat for fishing. Do you think I should do it like a T and run it to the center of the boat. Like right in front of the center stringer.. I was wondering if there is a reason the stringers don’t go up that far.
@jmink
@jmink 3 жыл бұрын
If I am following you correctly, the spot you're talking about is under the floor of the bow rider section. The bow rider floor rests on the stringers, so if you want to add a board or extend the deck to run underneath the bow rider you would run into issues with alignment unless you shorten your stringer heights.

jmink I understand what you are saying. Thanks for the reply. I have a t-156. It’s a little bit different than yours. Idk if it’s factory or if someone else redid it. My stringers all end at the cap supports. There is other bracing in the bow. I wish I could send a picture because it would be way better than I can explain it lol.

Picked up one of these that starts right up and comes with control and wirings for $500. Thought it was a steal until I got it home and ran it longer, thing has strong water coming out of telltale (which was added by previous owner) but after idling for a like ten minutes it starts heating up slowly where teltale water is hot enough where you can keep you hand under it for like 2 minutes and engine head also burns if you press your finger on it for a few seconds, I turned it off right away and am confused. Any ideas please, anyone?
