I believe I have the same motor I bought with a boat a few months ago before I bought it the Guy said it might be a hard start if it sits for awhile and he said he sprayed some starter fluid in it and it would run but my question is does the battery have to be strong enough to turn it over fast enough for it to start as well? Because It will turn the flywheel but I feel like it should be spinning a lot faster than it is

This is actually a very good question. At least on my motor, you do need a strong battery to start my motor. I learned this the hard way, as I went to the lake one time with a half dead battery and the motor wouldn't start. Also, if you have any questions later on about your motor, I'll be happy to help.

@jonahssmallenginerepair thanks I checked the battery and it said it was low and needed charged I haven't gotten around to charging it yet but I will definitely do that and I'll let you know how it goes

@@jonahssmallenginerepair I charged the battery and sprayed some starter fluid in the carburetor and I got it running ☺️ I know the carbs definitely need a good cleaning I don't really trust my self doing it Lol is there anything I can put in the fuel that might help a little bit

@@kevincampbell5357 That's wonderful that you got it running! Fuel additives, that's a very controversial question that everybody will give you a different answer to. In my opinion, fuel additives may work somewhat, but the added performance you may get from them won't even come close to performance you'll get from rebuilding the carbs. You could try to mix Seafoam in with the premixed fuel. I've heard of people who have used that stuff on outboards, and I've always heard good things about it.

@@jonahssmallenginerepair hey I got it on the water today and it did pretty good I was wondering how much water should be coming out it looks more like it spits than a steady flow out of the exhaust so do you know if that is normal or it should have more water coming out I remember seeing a video where they said when it's on the muffs that there not strong enough to push the water all the way through the motor and it needs to be fully in the water for it to work properly just another question I had

Could you tell us the parts #'s and where you ordered them from please?

The part number for those kits is 0439076. It includes everything you need. If you were to go on Ebay and search "OEM Evinrude 0439076", you should be able to find what you need. You could also go on marineengine.com and search the part number. I would make sure to get an OEM part.

Do you know what those two brass tubes sticking out the front of the carb?

If you mean the two tubes just behind the choke butterfly, to be honest, I was not paying attention to those when the carbs were apart, however since they leaked fuel when the needle and seat wouldn't seal, I believe they are actually the main emulsion tubes (which provide fuel to the engine while at full throttle). If fuel is coming out of those when the engine is off, your float is adjusted wrong, or you have a bad needle and seat.

So how exactly are you measuring the floats? Everytime you go to measure them with the caliper, you swing off screen?

Have you taken it out on the water yet? If so, how did it do? Im about to attempt to rebuild the carbs on my 1978 85hp but wasn't sure what all needed to be adjusted when putting the carbs back on after rebuild. I keep reading stuff about the floats possibly having to be adjusted and synchronizing the fuel system with the ignition system, and different things like that. Any info is appreciated.

Thank you for asking, I have taken it out, many times. I did nothing between the video and the first time I took it out, it started right up. The fuel mixture was just right and it had great throttle response. There are no screws to adjust fuel mixture, so with a clean carb, its almost impossible to screw it up. About the floats, during the rebuild, bend the metal between the float an where the pin goes so that the float is parallel with the body of the carb. Both floats also need to have the same drop, which should be about 31/32 of an inch (I think). That is adjusted by bending the small metal tab on the back of the float. I believe I showed myself doing this in the video. If you are not confident with adjusting the floats, just use your old floats (which should already be adjusted). As far as syncing the fuel and ignition system, that never gets out of adjustment unless the engine timing jumps, so don't worry about that. if you run into trouble or you have any questions throughout the rebuild, ill be glad to help.

@@fenderstrat05 I did, was actually very simple after watching this video. Cleaned them out real good, put all the new parts in them that came with the rebuild kit, slapped them back on and everything’s been good since.

I'm guessing you mean rings for the piston? rings aren't really a universal fit, they are custom for every model of engine. I couldn't tell you the size, but I could give you the part number, at least for my engine. The part number is 0385664. Just google that number followed by the word Evinrude and you'll find what you need.

Those jets beneath the screw on the side let you change the air fuel eh? I thought it had fixed jets? Good to know!

They do not let you change the air fuel mixture unfortunately. The only reason they are screwable is solely for the purpose of removing them. Those jets when installed can't be turned like adjusting screws. They must be tight.

Mine spew out fuel and the nnedle and seat seem fine. Bottom carb.

Yeah, that is what happened to me. After many failed attempts, the problem ended up being the new needle and seat I installed was not sealing, so I ended up putting the old one back in and it worked fine. Have you replaced the needle and seat? how about the float?

I switched top and bottm carbs.. (kind of a pain) and problem seems to be gone... wierd. Maybe some dirt got dislodged. I read the old tillotson carbs suck. Many report the bottom carb spew out fuel when motor is tilted up and squeeze bulb.

@@fredhuang9223 huh, that's odd. I don't know what to say there. My guess is less fuel pressure? I don't think you can use it like that though, aren't there linkages that need to be in certain places?
