I love how this channel is very much like a survival channel but in an ancient lord of the rings vibes (favorite movie) but it’s another way of survival that doesn’t use modern gear. Even your swords are a legitimate tool. You can actually survive quite well with this setup. I love this dude!

Great video. I find that side-opening cloaks are preferable to frontal for the reasons you gave, but the attachment method is the most difficult part if you want to shed it easily. I love the slip-knot idea for holding it, that's brilliant. Thanks!

awesome looking cloak, my first thought when I saw it was "is that a bocksten?" I guess not, but I find side opening cloaks are a practical option Your quick release closure is cool, maybe if you sewed inside one side of the cloak (like when you use rocks to tie off a blanket to make a shelter) you could put he slit knot round that and it might become a little more secure? and as for wrapping yourself up in that, I know that the author of the article you linked carries a separate blanket as well as his cloak when he's trekking in ranger gear, there is a video on the Middle-earth reenactment society KZbin called "Winter in Wilderland" where you can catch a few glimpses of his kit, that is an old article so I guess he changed his mind? btw I have holes in one of my cloaks because I have a knife sheath that goes sideways on the back of my belt, it's very easy to forget that a cloak is in the way

Thanks. I do think it looks very Bocksten as well. The person who wrote the article about this cloak pattern told me he has switched to a Bocksten since the article. I have considered a second blanket to carry. Or maybe just a piece big enough to lay under me. I like your idea for a tie point in the cloak. If it continues to come open unexpectedly.

i absolutely love my ruana cloak. super versatile, i have made three now: one a lightish fuzzy poly blanket (i wear this one all the time), one a 2 layer hunting style blanket (faux sheepwool one side, camo microfiber opposite), and one a heavy wool blanket convert that i would rather not ever have to live without. nice kit.

I tried the Ruana. I've tried bigger and smaller. I want to like it. But it's just not working for me. Thanks

If you put a toggle in the fabric when using the slip knot it will be less likely to come apart on its own.

I wonder if you could hold it closed with a nail or something like that. It might hold better than your slipknot but would also release with a quick pull. If you had an eyelet on the end of your nail you could then attach it to your cloak with a string so you wouldn't lose your clasp when you take it off.
@cortharynvinthorian4450
@cortharynvinthorian4450 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the idea. I've been thinking about how to improve the closure. I will have to give the nail a shot. So far I've come up with nothing.

I like it. It's simple and could be done with a blanket left square. I could see a bushcrafter or reenactor using this around camp or larp.. I think a roana cloak would be an awesome bit of kit...but it'd be a cloak that could double as a blanket and not the other way round. I'd put a hood on one myself

I am testing a Ruana cloak. It doesn't seem to be any good as a blanket. It's not working well for me as a cloak either. I like the idea of the Ruana. Mostly because it doesn't require any closure. But I think I prefer the coverage of the blanket cloak.

Very impressive kit, forgive my ignorance but is this for reenactment purposes, like Reinassance fairs, or something similar to Black powder Rendezvous folks re-creating circa 1830... just curious...

Thank you. It is for reenactment purposes yes. Similar to the Middle Earth Reenactment. Medieval fantasy. I do go to Ren Faires as well. This Persona is based on my DnD Ranger.

You should buy one of those Viking pins to pin your cloak. I bought 3 of the Viking pins and I’m gonna be modifying it to make it look like the Assassins creed logo so I can use it on my cloak when I get a cloak. If you don’t like the idea of putting a pin in your cloak, another option would be a better rubber band that will last longer than the regular ones. OR sew a Velcro strap to it so that way it will be alot easier to take off and put back on.

I do use a cloak pin now. I found one that is also a striker for flint & steel. It's definitely more secure.

I use a cloak pin now. It's also fire steel. If I do sew a closure on. Id have to do two. As it fits differently when I'm wearing my harness and when I'm just wearing it around camp.

It’s only $52.99 for that wool blanket which is not bad at all. I’ve been eyeballing it for quite some time now and was gonna buy one of those but then I saw a hooded blanket cloak and it’s 100% waterproof and windproof with premium stuff sack - perfect for stadiums and watching sports activites BUT, it’s freaken $189.00 though and it’s classic fleece and nylon not wool. This is why I’m having a hard time choosing the 52$ wool blanket or the 189$ hooded fleece blanket. I wanna look like a badass modern day warrior with a cloak. I got my katana sword, recurve bow with arrows, axe, throwing knives and my hand gun. All I need is a cloak with the hood.
