Hilarious how everyone in the comments is complaining about not needing this level of accuracy. It's not much more than a charge master 1500. Nobody "needs" that, but it sure is convenient. Who complained about their car having too much horsepower? I'd still rather have my fx120i personally, with coupon code it's only $15 more and the possibility of adding the auto trickler to it is worth the price. Next video when Gavin is measuring something the comments will be your tools aren't accurate enough to measure that level of precision. It never ends. Thanks for putting the video out, showing what it can do, and letting the individual decide if it's right for their application!

I was using 3 cheap electronic scales. 1 built into my Hornady auto charge dropper, a little Frankfort Arsenal scale and another cheap scale that read to 0.01 grains. When all 3 agreed, I’d load the powder. Very time consuming because they all had a tendency to drift and require re-calibration. Based on my low ES’s, it was working, but very time consuming.

I have seen videos with charge master versus the auto trickeler The standard deviation was only 1 ft./s better in terms of velocity which is really what you are measuring versus group size. So .1 versus .02 in the real world doesn’t yield much of a difference.

Nice to see the scale and hear a little bit about it, but it would have been nice to see a head to head comparison against your 120i ( that lots of us have) and weighing the same objects on both scales. Then would have been great to see a quick load development using both in the same lot of components and tested to see if this really makes any difference in data and on target. Compare the same mass in one scale multiple times. If it passes that, then you can add and subtract known mass and check *consistency* of results. Of note, It appears the scale's resolution is actually .005 rather than .001. But I am super excited to see where all this goes!!

Thank you finally years ago I told multiple reloaders that varget had variables in weight kernel to Kernel within a range. I had just a cheaper 100 dollar jewelry scale and my assumptions were questioned because of my scale which I accepted. I kept reloading to .1 tenth of grain and my rifles were shooting lights out. I could never disapprove that till your own assumptions of varget you discovered on accident. I know it doesn’t matter but I thought about changing my reloading to gain time off the bench and for practice ammo I might do that but for match ammo I am gonna take the extra time. Really like that scale I hope they make the autotickler compatible with it.

I purchased this scale so I could measure my 17 Hornet loads more exactly than my RCBS ChargeMaster was able to produce. The 17 Hornet is a new caliber to me, and the RCBS loads varied by up to about .085 +/- grains per throw, so two loads which were supposed to be the SAME could be .15 difference between the two. So I realized after weighing them that my load testing was not accurate at all. In the Hornet with a common load of 12.0 grains of Accurate 1680 for instance, that would be about 50 fps or more variance, and accuracy on my test loads were not accurate... Now I use the RCBS ChargeMaster to throw the load at .1 grains below the desired weight, then transfer it to the tray on the EJ-54D2 and use a Dandy Trickler to come up to exactly the correct weight. It's a bit time consuming, but a LOT more accurate than what I had before. I appreciate the video, I was hoping to find a KZbin review about this new scale related to reloading, much thanks! Now I'm going to re-test my loads of 20 gr V-Max with AA1680, and do new ones with AA2200 25 gr HP bullets.
@corydavis32583 жыл бұрын
I also load for 17 hornet i prefer AA2200 over 1680 i find that it has better SD/ES numbers what i will say however is that ball powders tend to be bad for SD/ES numbers in general so you might be spening your wheels with that much precision in measuring my best numbers and groups have come with AA LT-30 and Berger 25gr Hp bullets good luck on this fun round

An old addage comes to mind: "A difference that makes no difference is no difference." I seriously doubt that +/- .003 grains is going to make a verifiable difference in the performance of the ammo. While I like the USB interface & the sliding cover on the wind screen, the big negative for my operation is the max weight limitation. I enter the weight of the individual components in a spreadsheet (primed case, bullet, powder), let the spreadsheet calculate the total weight & then I weigh the cartridge ready to seat the bullet as a double check. Most of the cartridges I load are at or over the 350 grain max.

What Class Calibration Weight are you using? Class 1 or 2? What Class is the "free" weight you get with the UR code? At work we weigh to 0.00145 grains, 0.0001 gram. This requires annual verification under contract and every 48 hour verification using a calibrated weight set using 3 values. A scale of this precision would be useful to determine what factors contribute to variance. For instance, with a Dillon powder throw, how does accuracy of the throw vary by powder type, size of the throw, how full the hopper is, static build up, static discharge, etc. Some time ago, I saw a test that compared several factors to determine which ones had the biggest impact, but I couldn't help but wonder what scale was used and how much of the variance came from the scaled. Did the observed variance come from the scale or the factors?

There is good enough fast reloading on a progressive and there is this for people trying to squeak out anything extra to gain an advantage. Their ammo gets 1 percent more accurate but due to lack of shooting their groups open up 6" foiling any gains made with ammo. Fix one thing but break another. Its sort of a OCD obsession for some, if they could get it down to 1 molecule of powder they would want it. This just a tiny part of over all picture too. What if the primers are slightly hotter, does new brass outweigh reloading old brass. Spend a fortune on a scale then get cheap and use old used brass? then bullets, and barrels and scopes. Suddenly there is no time to shoot. If people compete its natural they look to better gear but it can get out of control. And the heavier the charge weight the less of a difference it makes. .1 make can make a difference in 2 gr pistol powder loads (not much) 40.1 vs 40.0 grans in a larger cartridge not going to matter.

First one I bought when they came out started messing up and I got a new one. Much faster than the original at reaching the set point. It is usually not off by more than +/- .02 grains. To be pedantic, that’s the most precise scale you own; whether it is accurate or not is a separate question. For example, it could be precisely and repeatably reading 10.003 grains when the actual weight is 9.000 grains or some other weight that is not 10.003. Does it really matter if your scale measure 0.05 or 0.0001 gr.? I mean even at 0.05 it is like +- 2 granualars few fps +- i mean I get it if you shoot ELR and really want to squeeze the last bit, but other than that...
@lars-erikbtkerpetersen94663 жыл бұрын
Sorry about the precision of 0.003 grains..... 🙄🥴🤔🤔🤔 During all of the video I never saw the digit "3" as the last digit . 3rd position after the dot. Alvays.XX0 or .XX5. That underlines the precision is absolutely no less than 0.005 grains... Sorry to say...

Gday Gavin, great review. Would you choose these over the fx300i mate just for weighing powder charges? Cheers
@1868Brett3 жыл бұрын
Please explain why weighing case has any benefit when 2 cases of the same mass can have different capacities. It's capacity that determines pressure, not case mass.
@Ultimatereloader3 жыл бұрын
It is a measure of manufacturing constancy, and there is a *direct* relationship between weight variation and capacity variation.

How does it measure weight? Does it use a magnet like high quality scales or does it measure like a gem pro 250... That makes a big difference in the long run...
@jimmyc72693 жыл бұрын
Load cell not force balance according to A&D's website. Probably why it's so much cheaper than force balance ones of the same resolution.
@shannonnunn3 жыл бұрын
@@jimmyc7269 sounds like fx-120i is the better choice then... Resolution means nothing without repeatability and consistency.
@jimmyc72693 жыл бұрын
@@shannonnunn According to the specs the repeatability of the fx-120i is 0.001g, 1x the resolution. Repeatibility of EJ-54 is 0.0004g, 2x the resolution. Certainly worse than a force balance scale of the same resolution, but still half of FX-120i's. I don't own or plan to buy either of them for now so I'm not biased towards either, but I don't think it's fair to say the EJ-54 has worse repeatability or consistency without more evidence.
@shannonnunn3 жыл бұрын
My experience with force scales like gem pro 250 have me wary... It never held zero... Had drift while trying to trickle... Every time the pan came off, it never had a consistent weight. You are right, I should not judge it, but resolution is different from consistency. My 120i has the same resolution as a gem pro but it is levels above it when it comes to consistency. Resolution does not matter as much as consistency after .02 grains. Especially on paper... I have loads that have extreme spreads of 10 feet.

Every thing you can make more precise comes at a price both in dollars and time. If someone can afford to chase those things, why would anyone else care? And it's cumulative too, each thing you make more accurate adds up, contributing to the overall accuracy.

@gavintoobe over the last few months of using this scale have you found any issues of drift? Considering this scale as a half way between my current gempro 250 which is on the fritz and the fx120i
@Ultimatereloader3 жыл бұрын
Hi Sam- this scale needs to warm up for 30-60 minutes, and is very sensitive to air currents in the room where you're using it. But once you account for these factors, drift is not an issue. It does take about 2x as long to stabilize a reading compared to the FX-120i. Some factors to consider!
@Samho19823 жыл бұрын
@@Ultimatereloader so no issues adding say a granule or two of powder at a time while trickling and it registers? I know some other strain gauges will detect it as drift and not register the addition of the minute amount of powder.
