I named my son Cortney, without the "u" in his first name. Starting his second week in Kindegarten his teacher pulled me aside when I picked him and his sister up from school and said, "I'm not sure how you would like me to address this, but your son 'Courtney' is having difficulty spelling his first name. He refuses to include the letter 'u' when writing his name. He also keeps telling me I'm the one misspelling his first name, he knows how it is spelled. It's a little frustrating." I smiled and replied, "Well, that's because he does know how to spell his first name, you don't." She apologized. To be fair, my daughter had the same Kindergarten teacher and she was amazing! My step daughter's first name is also Courtney, with the "u". They were both living with us, as adults, at the same time. One day my step daughter asked, "So, why did you name your son Cortney? It's a girl's name. Did he get picked on in school for having a girl's name?" To which I smiled and replied, "Historically, the name Cortney/Courtney with its various spellings is in fact a man's name. Courtenay was the 14th Arch Duke of France. It's a man's name and always has been. The better question would be to ask your Mom and Dad why they gave their baby girl a boys name.That was the end of that conversation." 😁 ~ APRIL LIPKE
