Besides the bolts missing for the motor everything else is just wear and tear on it.... not a lemon just a used motorcycle that’s been messed with in time.... a lemon would be if the motor or transmission went out or you found a crack in the frame or something

I worked at a Honda dealer when the 954 was out. The valve cover gasket was a known leaking issue. Just replace it. Also get a new cam chain tensioner that could be the ticking you heard. Also DO NOT ride it with those engine bolts missing. You have a great example there it just needs a few things. Feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions.

So let me get this. You're buying a 20 year old bike and you got some electrical problems and gasket leak - and that's a lemon? C'mon man. You can't expect everything to be perfect on an old bike like that. Just be happy if the engine doesn't explode at this point, it's an old bike, honda or not.

I wouldn’t really call it a lemon. It’s an old bike and needs a thorough inspection and will need new parts. Although the list of items is a bit long for the price you paid. Live and learn, but at least you’ll have a good looking bike when you’re done!

Hardly live and learn when the problems were not visible during the initial viewing of the bike, covering up an oil leak? Seller clearly didn't want him to know there's an oil leak. It's more like "some cockwomble just wanted to flip a piece of sh*te they just acquired and have no time for".

First things first, the foot pegs are oem, I’m not sure what you had on your rebuilt one. I’m selling my 954 collector type bike with 1k miles right now so I’ll help you out with some tips. Get motor mounts, they likely did a half assed swap, as I said in the previous video. Lift up The tank check the lines and make sure the harness and all isn’t screwed up. The CCT may be rattling if it isn’t the exhaust. Then just check the basics. Though In the end I seriously recommend just doing a tear down and rebuild. Adding on, if you ever need photos of a oem 954 and what things should look like just email me. I’ll be more than willing to show my bike and give some ideas what could be wrong. Until my 954 sells, (1k miles on the odometer) I’ll be more than willing to help.

I'd say the engine bolts are gone because the old crash protection bobbins got junked... because they were battle scarred and bent. Indicating it has been dropped over a couple of times and likely not stationary drops by the Mark's around the engine mount bolt holes. I really hope that engine noise from rhs isn't associated from running on it's side for too long, starved of oil. You need to look closer into that potential rod knock. Check valve shims and cam chain tensioner part number. There were lots of revisions. It's my favourite colour of that brilliant model! And it's not all chromed! That's some positives... it's a good idea to take an observant and clued up buddy with you when buying. The more keen eyes and ears the better. Good luck man, looking forward to watching you figure it out and fix it. I like that you are transparent about the negative stuff. Keep it that real.

Man that ain't nothin. I bought an R6, 2008 9k miles, $4000. Got a steal right? Bike had a cat delete, stock slip-on, but no tune, but he had new plugs in it, new oil, service receipts, so it sounded good. I put 50 miles on it and it started running on 3. Started up the next day and it wouldn't run on even 3, did a wet and dry compression test, 50/44/90/110. The new plugs were being run on such a lean bike that they were already shredded, a piece was missing on 2 of the plugs and we think that's what busted the engine. After about 2 months of off and on work: it ended in me selling it with a blown motor for $2500.

Not true That bike is shit I had a chance to look at 2003 954 for sale 2 years ago with less than 5k miles. Bike was spotless, showroom condition. Only mod was a d&d slip on. Everything else was stock, no fender eliminators, no screens, no aftermarket lights and original tires were almost like brand new. The guy wanted like 5-5200$ for it. I just wasn't in the market having 2 bikes and no more room. They are still out there just need to take time to find a perfect one not junk.

Sweet looking ride. I hope you get everything sorted, Mostly sounds minor. In my experience your front brake problem can be caused by the old brake lines. Sort of like clogged arteries. The lining can swell as they age, especially if the fluid was not changed regularly. When you apply the brake there is enough pressure to overcome the swollen lining, but when you release there is not enough pressure to allow them to open up. Obviously this is a serious safety issue.

went and looked at an 08 gsx750 the other day. everything looked clean in pictures guy assured me there were no problems on the phone. Went to go see it and sure enough bike had electrical problems; half the lights worked sometimes? it had problems with the chain, little cracks in the plastic, clearly had been dropped even though i was told it didn't, and best part was rear tire had a plug in it. Was told the tires were brand new haha. Like he said even though things look clean there can always be problems on any bike. Never take anybody's word for it. Now all these things are fixable. the bike wasn't a complete wreck, but for the premium he was charging for a "clean low mileage bike" we walked. Definitely take ur time to look over everything and bring a separate set of eyes if u can. My brother found half the problems that i may have missed had he not been there. ask alot of questions. if you don't get straight forward or complete answers probably a bad sign.

Concerning the Neutral light, i have a Honda Transalp (XL600V) that had the same issue when i first got it, try disconnecting a clutch switch lead see if it fixes the issue (temporarily) check if it would make it work, in my case the previous owner had disconnected the starter protection circuit at some point and reconnected it with the kickstand switch and the clutch switch mixed up after some troubleshooting mine now works fine. also in my research to find the issue i found on a thread that there is a diode for the kickstand switch it also could be wired backwards or shot. None of what you mentioned is at all a big deal. Not sure why you're bummed about dealing with the valve cover gasket - if you're buying a high performance bike without knowing its history, a valve adjustment job has to be near the top of your list of things to do. So that valve cover is coming off anyway. Just carefully clean the old stuff off, put in a new one (and maybe add a little gasketmaker/sealant where you noticed the leak?), torque it to spec, and chances are it'll be just fine. As to the engine - there is always an engine number engraved into it somewhere. Maybe it's under that sticker. Here in California, there is an engine number on the bike's registration, which matches the VIN to the engine. Check that they match on your bike - this is something you should do before you even buy it. As to the rattles you're hearing - the engine isn't properly fastened into the bike. That is going to cause some non-standard vibration. Replace the missing engine mount bolts first (and torque them to spec, for sure, maybe also use blue loctite), and that may just go away.

You did better than me. My first sports bike was a 1999 CBR 900rr that I owned between the ages of 17 and 22. I loved that bike and only sold it because I was hurting for money at the time. Now that I'm 38 and have multiple bikes for some reason I got a wild hair up my ass and decided to hunt down my original bike. Well I found it... But it had been laid over pretty bad and that's not even the worse part. The kid that had it decided to bubba the hell out of it and in the process threw away a lot of the original parts. I was so shocked that I actually found my first bike I really didn't care what condition it was in because I was planning on restoring it anyway. Well after months of working on it, spending more than it would've cost to find a 99 in great condition. The engine suddenly developed a small tick or knock. I've already done the valve shims and although they where pretty bad out of spec that wasn't the sound. I also replaced the timing chain, guides and tensioner so that wasn't the noise. I've put a bore scope in every cylinder, took the oil pan off and checked the rod caps the best I could without splitting the crank case and everything seems tight and good. The first oil change had a lot of clutch material in it (it was also way over filled) making me think it didn't get proper oil changes or worse they used the wrong oil but there wasn't any metal in the oil or oil filter. I way over paid for it ($1700) considering the condition it was in and the fact that I had to dump another $1500 into parts already not even mentioning the 100+ hours of work at this point I'm at a loss. I've rebuilt everything including the forks and had the rear shock rebuilt but I really really didn't want to build the engine. The only redeeming factor is I got my first real street bike back. I'm honestly not sure where the sound is coming from but it's running great and no metal in the oil so I'm just going to ride it until it either goes away or I find the problem.

Mine was $4300 with just over 10,000 miles and super clean.Curently at 30,000 miles and running great.I once owned a CBR900 for 12 years with probably close to 150,000 miles(odometer/spedo NEVER worked).Hell,I never even once adjusted the valves. Was SUPER reliable.Do NOT confuse that reliability with HONDA Automobiles!!!

As far as the rattle underneath the bike goes, i bet huge money on the htev exhaust spring + actual valve that has gotten a bigger clearance over time and it just rattles (mine did, i ignored it for some time but then i got fed up with it and removed the whole valve altogether and the rattle was gone)

If you're buying a bike this old and it didn't come with any service records showing proof of last inspections or servicing. You should plan on doing a LOT of maintenance, like everything the manual calls for up to and even beyond the recommendations. But hey, only your life may depend on it. I would guess the guy did know there was an oil leak, because it was so clean when you bought it. The leak can simply be the valve cover not torqued down properly after a valve adj./inspection. Used bike do's, Inspect: head bearings wheel bearings chain sprocket wear strip down and clean all cables. inspect clutch ass. mic plates Check valve clearances inspect timing chain. change fork fluid (I would fully break them down) change/rebuild rear shock lubricate shock dog bones inspect all motor mounts inspect swing arm pivot rebuild calibers change all fluids air/oil filters ...

Be careful when tightening the head cover bolts. Sometimes they thread into the cam caps. Put a light sheen of non hardening gasket sealer where it was leaking.

I got 5 954rr. Check the nutral switch it might just be grounded in. Plus when you get the front engine mount bolt make sure them thread are not stripped. It will be a pain in the rear if they are stripped. Hey also a word of advice run a little bit thicker oil in the 954rrs. They are great bikes if you take care of them. I got a lot of parts laying around. Currently building a 2005 cbr1000rr. And I will say most of the 954rr parts are interchangeable.

@@HeroRR hear me out so these 954rr has thinner piston skirts. With causes the pistons to slap along the cylinder walls. Honda was trying to save wait by decreasing the piston skirts. What you are using for oil is perfectly okey. I would recommend using a ticker oil. Idk if you live in a warm area. But I don’t want to say this but I used 10w-40 or 10w50. I know it’s think. But hear me out. It will be think enough for the pistons not to slap. When you change the oil and just listen to the engine and she how the bike sounds. I got plenty of photos of the pistons and issues that I’m trying to improve with the 954rr.

I'm in the middle of a $1100 954 project myself. Has cost me so much damn money. If the issue isn't the NPS I'd look into replacing the bank angle sensor. If the bike went down (hence the case scratch and no sliders) then those things tend to short and need replaced.

Mate, looks like you got a great bike at a great price. You are obviously enthusiastic about Fireblades so you must know how desirable the 954 SC50 is as the ultimate Tadao Baba design. Your biggest worry is the engine bolts, don't ride it without, the engine is part of the frame on this model. Whenever I buy a used bike I like to give it a full major service before I use it hard, in the UK that means performing the 16k miles service items. Since you are planning to remove the cam cover to inspect your leak you may as well check your clearances, you will have easy access to your plugs and you'll want to do an oil change + coolant flush for your own peace of mind. Best of luck mate

If your in the 2nd hand market a decent test ride isn't always an option although it's good advice. Like you say a cautionary tale, because at first glance she looks clean for her age. To have all these issues spring up the second you arrive home is a bit dodgy. I hope it all turns out to be minor issues you can deal with yourself. Good luck sir she's still a looker.

All electrical related I'd assume, probably a misfire with the coil or plug. I'd check that you have spark first at all 4 cylinders. As for the headlight it's probably an issue where a wire is grounding out.

Valves cover is very minor :). You must take it off and check valve clearances every 10-20 thousand miles anyway. Old Hondas are more like an exception of not sinking in the valves and few people check it. But it is a fun job.

If you count the blinks it will give you the code. I forget the method but i believe it’s for every long blink is a factor of 10 and every short blink is a factor of 1. So if you have 3 long blinks and 4 short blinks then it’s code #34. My old 954 had a fi light for the servo motor. They make servo deletes that will fix that issue. But you may want to consider keeping the servo zip tied in the fully open position if you do that so it’s not just flapping open and shut.

my 06 fireblade got small oil stains on same place only further down the gasket,it doesnt leak but i guess since its old now, tiny bit of oil escaped,it stays the same tho. Those footpegs are probably better because they absorb the vibration, compare to bare metal that you want to put back on,i would just leave it without frame sliders unless you super scared for those fairings. And looks like that gas tank cover should be lifted up and put back onto the plastic properly because the side plastic should be on the inside looks like.I have same damage on the left engine cover and its fine i wouldnt replace it incase you gonna drop it again and right side got replaced probably because its been dropped alot thus maybe having engine rattle problems.Idk if the air filter under the tank do they might have messed with that so you outta check. It is what it is if the engine is fucked up but still 4 thousand is not bad,on the outside it looks great. My engine is fine i think but even in a decent shape that i got the bike it had missing fairing bolts and scuffs here and there, bent rear brake from laying it down.Just get a pro to look at the engine, the rest doesnt seem like bad problems
