The bbs content is good. I was helping a bit with the meshtastic bbs but I've fallen out of the mesh game. It's kind of interesting but far too dependent on phones and tablets. I know there's the handheld thing with it's horrible keyboard and ball mouse, but its hard to beat a simple radio I was in the bbs game back in the 90s when it was huge. 28.8 modems, bbs's grabbing fidonet, hosting CDs full of random programs and information. It was fun Sounds like your getting a lot of traffic on your bbs and that makes it 10x more motivating and enjoyable! Great work overall!

Glad to hear it. I briefly looked at Meshtastic as soon as I found that there were no nodes where I live and that the "long range" marketing is a bit of misnomer when compared to the longer range that we get with VHF in our area and the success that we have with regional comms daily over HF. The technology is changing in the Meshtastic scene too quickly for my taste. I prefer stable. Also, the all devices look they would break while I'm rock crawling and get ejected off the bike.

I put a Signal Stick antenna on my VR-N76 (same radio). It gets APRS beacons out more reliably than my Yaesu. I expect half the beacons to be lost on the Yaesu under the same conditions, so I can half the beacon rate on the VR, which widens the battery life gap even further.

I just watched a YT video by "W7DOA at Ham Radio" and he found the BTECH to be somewhat deaf compared to several other low priced radios even with a Signal Stick antenna. It could have just been his radio that had the problem, but it may be worth checking out on your radio. If it can't hear, that lessens the usefulness of the radio. He also identified one other problem. You might want to watch his video and see what you think. I don't have a BTECH Pro, so I'm only going off what the other video put out.

I rarely watch other videos or read any posts related to new radios that I evaluate for personal use as I do not want to have any bias influence my view of the gear. I also tend to look through the comms world very differently than most of my peers, so I tend not to hang on any assertions from the broader KZbin radio community. I mean no offense, I am just a proponent of once gear meets the communication goals at hand, I stop messing with it and simply use it as a tool. Other than a 6 month review, I will likely not be covering this radio anymore as it does almost everything that I need. In terms of it being deaf, I can only speak to my personal experience based on prelimminary field testing. I had some issues with the stock antenna and found the Diamond RH707 resolved all of my receive issues for both packet and voice. At the point in which I was able to carry out all my communications goals, I stopped missing with it. I plan to switch to my Ed Fong roll-up J-Pole that's in my field kit if the RH707 has issues making the contact.

I have all of my radios channel programmed the same. Harris County ARES has a CHIRP file for local 2m repeaters. It can do 128 channels, so the UV5R was the lowest common denominator. But having it in frequency orser makes it easier to find the freq you need.

Unfortunately, I do not have a clue. I tend not to jump into those details. From what I hear they are essentially the same radio. I tend to be more of a practical user of gear and the UV PRO was the one that happened to arrive first. It does everything I need and solved some long standing needs that I had. The radio is now officially a tool, so my evaluation has stopped. The next EDC switch will be when the following is introduced: 1. Dual band analog and digital (DMR) 2. Built-in Bluetooth TNC or Bluetooth soundcard with PPT 3. IP67 rating & rugged construction 4. USB-C charging 5. Ease of programming and closing Ideally, I would like to see an all-in-one that combines the feature set of the BTECH DMR-6X2 and the UV PRO.

But then the BTech UV-Pro (same radio as the VGC VR-N76) came out. Initially I was excited about it but I but thought they were Digital. Turns out Analog only. Now I need to pick one and I'm not sure if I pass up DMR for the ruggedness and bluetooth-ability of the UV-Pro or go full DMR and get the AnyTone. What am I not considering between these two radios or is there a another option out there that is in the Sub $350 / $400 range?
@TheTechPrepper17 күн бұрын
Greg, these are apples and oranges. I have both radios and their features sets are pretty different. I have a suspicion that BTECH will likely have a radio in the future that adds DMR to something like the UV Pro (analog and digital). That would be the perfect radio, especially if they add support for AES-256 bit encryption with easy key loading via the app and over the air sharing (like the channel sharing). I suggest writing down the communication modes that are important to you as well as features that you need and build a pros/cons list. I have both antennas, but can't use the 77CA as it is not good for running a radio while moving on the bike or on foot. For me the compromise is acceptable and I get the performance I need over the stock rubber duck. You have to look at more than one dimension when looking at what gear works best for you and your intended application. For example, I used to carry a 4 element yagi, but it takes time to set up, is bulky and competes with room for my support gear. If gain and range matters, then I bring this.

The USB-C charging is quick and painless. I was out in town and programmed a couple of repeaters manually. It was also dead simple. What really pushed it over the top was the ease of synching the channels over the air with my newly purchased second unit. With regards to new and long-wanted features, and features-per-dollar value, the Chinese companies are kicking the Japanese companies asses. I say that not to dig on the Japanese companies, but because I like their radios and their build qualitiy, and its frustrating to see these Chinese radios to get all these cool updates and features while the Japanese ones feel progressively stagnant.

I fully agree, especially as a self-proclaimed Yaesu fanboy. Here's my response to a similar comment: "I don't get what the Japanese manufactures are thinking. They have some serious catching up to do to compete. Personally, I would pay 3x to 4x more for the exact radio from a company like Yaesu as the build quality would superior. One thing I would like to see is support for DMR in addition to the current feature set."

@@TheTechPrepperabsolutely. A lot of catching up to do. It’s frustrating because we all know they can do better, and we all want them to do better.

why do you edc radio?

I used it every day. I carry it along with my wallet, keys, pocket knife, flashlight and CCW. Most of my communication with my close group is handled over radio. I have a healthy aversion to relying on communication methods that I do not control (cell and Internet).

I hate programming manually via the app, I can manually edit a CSV on my laptop and then import it to the radio, but that's still clunky. They should update it to accept Chirp exports...then it would be perfect.

I'm sure that this support is coming. The developer(s) of the firmware seem to be actively developing features and fixes.

@@TheTechPrepper That will be awesome if they can implement that.

Could you please review the BTECH DMR-6X2 DMR & Analog Dual Band Two-Way Radio? I'd appreciate your insights about it, especially given your interest in DMR. Thanks.

Unfortunately, I already have an investment in the the AnyTone 578 and 878 that I am using for DMR with encryption. I am sure that one of the other channels has already covered it. I'm more of an operator that finds a tool and uses until it ceases to provide value. However, I have a feeling that there may be a future where the DMR-6X2 and UV PRO have a baby. If that happens, I'll do a review. This year I am focused on R&D to make comms easier. I wish I had the time to do reviews, but it takes way too much time to fully test a radio to form a proper opinion.
