Indeed. I told my parents when I was 10 that they should have been saving for their retirement and my college and get their finances in order..... By the time I hit 18 they lost the house, had 0 savings period, and told me they didn't know what to do for my education. I looked at them with disappointment. I got a full ride scholarship. I have more savings then they do. They should have listened to me at 10 years old. To boot, they declared bankruptcy and still spend like they are in Congress. I just don't get it.

She grinded it out going to school to become a nurse, raised her kid during the day while working at night, and is now funding her kids college (with a little help from the kid himself because he earned scholarships and such). I have a stepson and I told my wife we will save for his college. We have 14k saved. He’s 9 so we have 9 to 10 years I would like him to take a year break and travel with a budget that we plan on giving. His father doesn’t want to pay for his school he said let him figure it out. She should have had this conversation with her new husbands when they first got married.

No, the new husband is off the hook. They followed Dave's pre-marriage advice by getting organized about money and their kids BEFORE they got married. She had seven years to save and it sounds like she has zero ready on that obligation. On a side note, the new husband might not share the philosophy that parents pay for kids college anyway....

Her plan is to have her current husband pay for her half of her son's education and then walk out. Too bad we never get follow up with these calls, but I guarantee you this isn't going to end well.
