Relocating Wasps is super important! I make it a point of relocating at least 10 wasp nests a season, and this is the very first yellow jacket nest relocation of 2023! This species is Dolichovespula arenaria, they are aerial nest building Yellow Jackets. Stay tuned for updates on this colony!

Honestly, if I didn't tell you they were there, you wouldn't notice any difference. Aside from seeing them chewing on fences on my property, I don't really see them out and about.

That is just so cool! Really a treat to watch them build. My friend would probably not agree after this morning. He opened up his camper for the first time and had a nest fall down the back of his shirt. Good thing he is not allergic. There was a lot of colorful language and interesting dance moves. i love seeing your pet wasps!! there's a baby hive of european paper wasps on our porch eaves, and i've been trying to convince dad to let them stay (update! they're staying :D) 'cause the hive won't get too big (only like 200 wasps max, according to my research) and they only sting if you bother them or their nest and they've picked a REALLY safe spot for a nest! at first i thought they were german yellowjackets based on their nesting behavior, but then i went out and looked at them and their stripes were all wrong, and i looked up "wasps that look like yellowjackets but aren't" and found european paper wasps, and when i found that they were a species that dangle their hind legs when flying i knew i had them id'ed correctly!!

Had to move my first wasp nest earlier this year. Watched yours and Fred Dunn's videos to get an idea on the how to. They are red paper wasps so put the girls in an old hose reel box under my deck near where I do my wood work. That way I can watch them come and go. I would have never thought about moving them if I hadn't seen a video last year (I think) of you setting up a nest in a box. Thanks.

Far braver than me, that's for sure. Encountered my first ground nest of the season yesterday actually. Being in the northeast, I usually don't see much yellowjackets, especially not ground nests, until about this time of year or late summer generally. Was weed whacking along a wooden fence that's surrounding an in-ground pool, headphones in, not paying much attention. For whatever reason, I just happened to look about 6ft behind me where I had just trimmed, and saw about 15 or 20 buzzing above the ground. Miraculously I didn't get stung, but I went right over the hole with the weed trimmer. Had no idea it was there. Pure luck that I didn't get stung, but I don't think it was a terribly big colony since I didn't see THAT many despite disturbing them like I did. Needless to say I got a pep in my step and hauled ass out of there lol. Went and told the homeowner about it and showed them where it was so they could either handle it themselves or call a professional. I have an absolute disdain for yellow jackets. Paper wasps, not so bad. Usually a lot more docile and won't bother you much. Yellow jackets come after you if you give em a dirty look.

I know this is late, but can you try the box relocation method with ground species such as V. maculifrons or V. squamosa? For example, if you got called in for a young nest in the spring, could you not just dig it up and hot glue it inside of a box? The box would act as an underground cavity for them, and it would be really interesting to see their nest design.

In the past i have had great results with getting rid of ground wasps by placing a big clear glass bowl over the entrance hole. I do this early in the morning when they are all inside the nest. The starve to death. The bowl has to be clear, otherwise they will make another hole.
